Modified spinopelvic fixation with a novel three-dimensional-printed element following total sacrectomy for patients with sacral tumours.

OBJECTIVE: Total sacrectomy is now a standard curative procedure for primary malignant sacral tumours. Reconstruction, however, remains demanding because of the complex regional anatomy and unique biomechanical environment. Several spinopelvic reconstruction techniques have been reported, all yielding satisfactory functional outcomes. This study aims to evaluate both the clinical outcomes and the biomechanical behavior of a modified spinopelvic fixation construct, which incorporates a novel three-dimensional-printed component following total sacrectomy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective c

Emerging Evidence for Three-Dimensional (3D)-Printed Guide Templates in Cervical Spine Trauma Surgery: A Scoping Review.

Cervical spine fractures are complex injuries that require precise surgical fixation. Conventional freehand pedicle screw placement is associated with prolonged operative time, higher blood loss, and repeated fluoroscopy. Three-dimensional (3D) printing (3DP) offers customized patient-specific templates that may improve safety and efficiency in such cases. This scoping review was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched for comparative studies evaluating 3DP

The Use of Platelet-Rich Fibrin-Coated Three-Dimensionally (3D) Printed Scaffolds in Salvage of Complex Hindfoot Cases.

Background: Complex hindfoot pathologies involving critical-sized bone defects of the talus are difficult to manage. The current management involves arthrodesis and bone grafting with the defective talus, which have limitations in restoring structural integrity and functional goals. The advancement of 3D-printed scaffolds has opened new avenues to address such complex hindfoot pathologies, which may potentially improve treatment outcomes. The addition of platelet-rich fibrin further enhances healing potential. Method: This is a retrospective study involving six patients with severe talar bone

Perceptions regarding the use of a three-dimensionally-printed manufactured educational simulator for periodontal treatment of intraosseous and interradicular lesions.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Treating intraosseous lesions (IOLs) and interradicular bone lesions (IRLs) is an extremely technical dental procedure in periodontics. Instrumentation of these lesions is often perceived as difficult by students and inexperienced dentists before they perform a certain number of procedures on patients in the clinic. The aim of this article is to evaluate a cost-effective three-dimensional (3D)-printed educational simulator for the periodontal treatment of IOLs/IRLs (including scaling, incisions and sutures). METHODS: The simulators were first developed digitally, and then

Three-Dimensional-Printed Patient-Specific Total Cuboid Replacement for Treatment of Post-traumatic Arthritis: A Case Report.

Cuboid injuries, including fractures, are rare and infrequently occur in isolation. Often, cuboid injuries can be treated nonoperatively. However, when surgery is indicated, appropriate management is necessary for maintaining the associated biomechanics of the midfoot. Current procedures for surgical management of the cuboid include open reduction and internal fixation, application of external fixation, or primary arthrodesis of the calcaneocuboid joint. Secondary procedures for symptomatic or poor outcomes of nonoperative and operative cuboid injuries consist of corrective osteotomy, bone res

Living donor liver transplantation in situs inversus totalis with a patient-specific three-dimensional printed liver model.

We utilized patient-specific 3D liver models based on preoperative computed tomography images as intraoperative navigation and describe our experience. A 1-year and 10-month-old girl with situs inversus totalis underwent living donor liver transplantation for biliary atresia. Information on the hepatic artery, portal vein, inferior vena cava, and liver parenchyma was extracted and segmented from computed tomography images using liver analysis software. Laser lithography produced each 3D part of the liver from these data. The 3D models of each part of the liver were molded from polyurethane res

Individual resection and reconstruction of pelvic tumor with three-dimensional printed customized hemi-pelvic prosthesis: A case report.

RATIONALE: Pelvic tumor had great impact on patients' quality of life. After tumor resection, how to accurately fill bone defect remained challenging for orthopedic surgeons. Due to lack of individual design, high incidence of prosthetic mismatching, and loosening were reported in pelvic reconstruction surgery with conventional modular prostheses. Nowadays, with rapid development of three-dimensional (3D) print technology, pelvic prostheses could be designed according to patients' own anatomy. The objective of this study was to describe the application of 3D printed customized hemi-pelvic pros

Three-dimensional printed models of the rib cage in children with non-accidental injury as an effective visual-aid tool.

Three-dimensional (3-D) printing is gaining terrain in medical education, presurgical evaluation and recently as forensic evidence in court. Physicians, including radiologists, often provide expert testimony in court cases involving children with rib fractures and other injuries concerning for child physical abuse. Effectively communicating the complexities of fractures and other skeletal findings to nonmedical personnel using standard radiology studies can be challenging, especially during medical courtroom testimony. For this reason, we printed two 3-D models of the rib cage from the chest c

Workload implications for clinic workflow with implementation of three-dimensional printed customized bolus for radiation therapy: A pilot study.

Bolus is commonly used in radiation therapy to improve radiation dose distribution to the target volume, but commercially available products do not always conform well to the patient surface. Tumor control may be compromised, particularly for superficial tumors, if bolus does not conform well and air gaps exist between the patient surface and the bolus. Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology allows the creation of highly detailed, variable shaped objects, making it an attractive and affordable option for customized, patient-specific bolus creation. The use of 3D printing in the clinical se

Patient-specific pre-contouring of osteosynthesis plates for mandibular reconstruction: Using a three-dimensional key printed solution.

PURPOSE: In mandibular reconstructive surgery, the osteosynthesis plates require contouring according to the patients' individual anatomical situation. These plates are frequently contoured around a three-dimensional (3D) printed model. However, the translation to the actual patient can introduce inaccuracies and unwanted rotations in the condyles and mandibular ramus, due to malpositioning of the pre-contoured plate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article describes an easy-access method for exact translation of the pre-contoured plate to the patient's mandible. This is done by using 3D printed

Three-dimensional printed degradable splint in the treatment of pulmonary artery sling associated with severe bilateral bronchus stenosis.

Pulmonary artery sling is a congenital cardiovascular disease and is usually accompanied by tracheobronchial stenosis. Generally, infants diagnosed with pulmonary artery sling should have surgery. However, the treatment of tracheobronchial stenosis is still controversial. Our team developed a customised, degradable, three-dimensional printed splint and successfully applied it in the treatment of pulmonary artery sling associated with severe bilateral bronchus stenosis. We suggested that three-dimensional printing may be a novel and effective way to treat tracheobronchial stenosis and other dis

Three-Dimensional Screen Printing Technology Enables Sequential Release of Carbidopa and Levodopa-A New Approach Improving Levodopa Delivery for Treating Parkinson's Disease.

Introduction: Levodopa (LD) is the most efficacious antiparkinsonian drug. However, long-term conventional LD treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) is frequently associated with motor complications. This can be attributed to pulsatile dopaminergic stimulation given the short LD half-life of conventional dosage forms. Tablets capable of delivering more stable and sustained dopaminergic stimulation would better mimic the brain's natural dopamine activity. Methods: In this study, 3D screen printing technology was used to manufacture oral dosage forms characterized by the sequential release of Car
