[Health needs and organization of care in prison].

The prison population in France is mostly composed of young but aging men, in relatively good health but vulnerable. In order to ensure optimal health care for this population, several levels of health care organization - somatic and psychiatric - have been set up since 1994. The different structures created since then allow incarcerated patients to benefit from care adapted to their particular conditions.

Growing health in UK prison settings.

Globally, prisoners tend to come from marginalized and socially disadvantaged sections of the society and exhibit a high incidence of ill health, linked to social exclusion and multiple complex needs. Prisons therefore offer an important opportunity to tackle inequality and injustice, through promoting health, reducing reoffending and facilitating community reintegration. This paper reports on and critically discusses findings from an evaluative research study, which aimed to identify and explore impacts of prisoners' participation in an innovative social and therapeutic horticultural programme…

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Subjective wellbeing was assessed via a visual analogue scale and retrieved at admission to remand prison and then again after four and eight weeks. Changes in subjective wellbeing between time-poin

Drug use in the year after prison.

With poor health and widespread drug problems in the U.S. prison population, post-prison drug use provides an important measure of both public health and social integration following incarceration. We study the correlates of drug use with data from the Boston Reentry Study (BRS), a survey of men and women interviewed four times over the year after prison release. The BRS data allow an analysis of legal and illegal drug use, and the correlation between them. We find that illegal drug use is associated with histories of drug problems and childhood trauma. Use of medications is associated with po

However, there is a limited understanding of the women's unique maternity needs and how correctional institutions and maternity service providers respond to these needs. AIM: The aims of the review are threefold. METHOD: An integrative literature review was undertaken. A comprehensive search strategy using seven electronic databases resulted in the retrieval of 363 articles. The death toll of French former prisoners.

Several studies have documented that ex-prisoners are at higher risk of death than the general population but only one study, concerning one single prison, has examined the French case. This study relies on a nationally representative sample of all inmates released from French prisons between June and December 2002. A linkage between two administrative databases makes it possible to study mortality within 5 years after release. The magnitude of ex-prisoners' excess mortality is similar to that observed in other studies. The standardized mortality ratio is 3.6 (95% CI 3.1-4.1). Excess mortality…

Sex Offenders in Prison: Are They Socially Isolated?

Empirical literature has revealed that social isolation can affect the rehabilitation of sex offenders after serving their sentence. This process of social isolation can already start during incarceration due to strained relationships with fellow prisoners and correctional staff. The current study examined to what extent sex offenders felt socially isolated during incarceration, using survey and registered conviction data on a large sample of male adult prisoners from the Prison Project. It was found that support from and relationships with correctional officers and fellow prisoners were perce

Developing a sleep apnoea clinic for prisoners.

People in prison may experience barriers in accessing health services. By exploring some of these barriers and how they have been overcome, this article describes how prisoners were made aware of obstructive sleep apnoea and the associated risks, and how a clinic was set up in a prison healthcare centre. It shows how access to a community service was made available to the prisoners, and details how the service was set up, how it operates and what the outcomes achieved.

The construct of psychopathy in a Chilean prison population.

OBJECTIVE: To test the four-factor model of the Hare Psychopathy Checklist - Revised (PCL-R) empirical construct of psychopathy in a Chilean prison population by using instruments that supply different types of data. METHODS: Two hundred and nine male inmates of the Prison of Los Andes, Chile, were evaluated. Confirmatory factor analysis was carried out with the PCL-R and the Self-Report of Psychopathy - III - Short Form (SRP-III-SF). RESULTS: The distributions of total PCL-R and SRP-III-SF scores were normal (Kolmorogov-Smirnov [K-S] = 1.04, p = 0.230; K-S = 0.812, p = 0.525, respectively),
