People diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) experience health disparities. To reduce disparities, healthcare students and professionals have repeatedly called for more training to help patients with NDD. To answer these calls, we developed time-efficient training to teach healthcare students and professionals to use evidence-based behavioral interventions during physical examinations to increase the comfort and cooperation of people with NDD. We hypothesized that the training would increase participants' confidence and competency in helping patients with NDD. Participants (n = 173

Negative social attitudes, discrimination, and homophobia affect gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) individuals during their lifetimes. These experiences can affect how these individuals access health services and interact with health professionals, resulting in adverse outcomes compared with their heterosexual counterparts. End-of-life experiences can also be shaped by these factors. There are implications for health professionals in terms of equity of access to targeted health care, preventive screening, and visibility in policy, as well as in principles of inclusiveness, dignity

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided nerve blocks (UGNBs) are increasingly incorporated into multi-modal analgesia in the Emergency Department (ED). Despite their growing adoption, there is no consensus defining when an Emergency Medicine (EM) clinician is competent to perform UGNBs. Training methods, assessment approaches, and credentialing standards remain highly variable across institutions. The objective of this study was to define competency in UGNBs for EM physicians through a modified Delphi method that included national experts in EM and Anesthesia.
METHODS: A comprehensive librarian-assiste

A quality improvement project to standardize peripheral intravenous catheter insertion, maintenance, and documentation was implemented with the goal of aligning with professional standards for peripheral intravenous catheter removal as clinically indicated. The project team included nursing professional development roles, content experts, and clinical nurses and engaged learners with multimodal strategies including interactive education and competency validation. Nurses successfully adopted practices to align with professional standards and increased dwell time without an increase in related b

BACKGROUND: Competency frameworks are commonly used to define expectations, aid acquisition of appropriate skills and ensure safe delivery of care to patients. The Intensive Care Society's Allied Health Professionals Critical Care Professional Development Framework (CCPDF) provides broad descriptors of levels of practice ranging from novice to expert. Prior to May 2021, no standardised clinical competency frameworks governed physiotherapy practice or development in the critical care setting in the UK.
METHODS: The aim was to develop and evaluate the value of a cross-organisational, physiother

BACKGROUND: Therapist-guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (guided iCBT) is an effective and scalable treatment for anxiety and depression. Central to this format is the expectation that patients work independently with therapeutic content. However, limited attention has been paid to how healthcare professionals and patients within guided iCBT understand the patient role.
OBJECTIVE: This study explores how healthcare professionals and patients understand the patient role in guided iCBT, using self-determination theory to examine how autonomy, competence, and relatedness shap

INTRODUCTION: In older people undergoing surgery, there is a lower tolerance for complications. This highlights the need for documented clinical practices on proper prevention, pre-screening and management of complications such as postoperative delirium (POD). Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines exist for delirium management; however, the management of delirium in clinical settings differs widely.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop an understanding of the knowledge, components of self-efficacy (confidence/competence), and clinical practice related to POD care among preoperative and

BACKGROUND: During pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium, women receive care from a range of health professionals, particularly midwives. To assess the current situation of maternity care for women with physical disabilities in Austria, this study investigated the perceptions and experiences of health professionals who have provided care for women with disabilities during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.
METHODS: The viewpoints of the participating health professionals were evaluated by means of semistructured interviews followed by an inductive qualitative content analysis of the intervi

Confronted with structural challenges arising from an aging population, rising chronic disease burdens, and inequitable resource allocation, traditional downstream interventions are increasingly inadequate for effective health governance. This study argues that the critical bottleneck lies in a "human capital deficit," where current education fails to equip students with interdisciplinary knowledge and competency to solve complex real-world challenges. To address this, we propose an upstream social security intervention by establishing a competency-based talent development framework in health

Numerous studies have shown that medical learners experience poorer wellbeing than their counterparts in the general population. Over the last decade, medical learner wellbeing has become front-of-mind for educators and administrators, which has helped drive systematic improvements in learning and working environments. However, as awareness has grown on the importance of learner wellbeing, a parallel narrative has emerged that questions whether these initiatives are impacting the development of medical competency. In this article, the authors argue that the false dichotomy of wellbeing vs comp

OBJECTIVES: This study explored how Muslim clients experience the minimisation or exclusion of religion in therapy and identified their recommendations for making therapeutic practice more inclusive of faith.
DESIGN: A qualitative design using reflexive thematic analysis was employed to examine participants' lived experiences and meaning-making processes.
METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 Muslim adults in the UK who had received therapy in both NHS and private settings. Data were analysed inductively to capture individual and systemic influences shaping the minimisat

This study examines evidence-based pedagogical strategies aimed at enhancing communication competence, with a particular focus on foreign language speaking skills, among Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students at the primary education level. Acknowledging the distinct linguistic, cognitive, and communicative characteristics of DHH learners, the research addresses the central question: Which instructional techniques most effectively promote the development of speaking and broader communicative abilities in this population? Employing a qualitative research design, the study engaged 55 primary-le

Dental education must continually adapt to changes in licensure, assessment expectations, patient care priorities, and institutional resources. At the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center College of Dentistry, Class II and Class III operative dentistry competencies for D4 students were moved from the clinical setting to the simulation laboratory, where students complete standardized preparations and restorations on plastic teeth with simulated caries. This perspective uses that curricular change as a case example to analyze a broader assessment problem: how dental programs can improv

INTRODUCTION: Teacher professional recognition is a key factor in promoting teacher professional development and improving educational quality. In reality, many teachers feel undervalued and lack the recognition and attention they deserve, and organizational support often remains superficial. Existing research has mostly focused on either organizational support or teacher competence in isolation, lacking a systematic exploration of their synergistic effects. This theoretical blind spot has limited the academic understanding of the mechanisms of teacher professional recognition and has led to s

INTRODUCTION: Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) programs have an emphasis on developing skills in providing family-centered and interdisciplinary care. Due to Coronavirus pandemic-related restrictions, opportunities for interdisciplinary education were limited for the 2020-2021 LEND Trainee cohort at The Ohio State University Nisonger Center. Standardized Patient (SP) encounters can be a mechanism for instruction and assessment of interprofessional competence.

BACKGROUND: International medical graduates working in the UK are more likely to be censured in relation to fitness to practise compared to home graduates. Performance on the General Medical Council's (GMC's) Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) tests and English fluency have previously been shown to predict later educational performance in this group of doctors. It is unknown whether the PLAB system is also a valid predictor of unprofessional behaviour and malpractice. The findings would have implications for regulatory policy.
METHODS: This was an observational study linking

Medical doctors that neglect the roles of communicator, team worker, organizer and professional can be expected to perform inadequately. The content of the training of medical doctors should be reconsidered. A selection should be made of the biomedical sciences that are required during the training for later medical practice. Thus, these basic sciences should, in part, make way for social sciences to ensure the development of team skills.

In the United States, tobacco treatment specialists are professionals from a variety of backgrounds trained to deliver moderate to intensive evidence-based tobacco treatment in a variety of settings across the country. This paper reports the results of a study that examined the extent to which specialists participating in a larger study adhered to clinical practice guidelines for tobacco dependence using standardized patient assessments. A total of 64 tobacco treatment specialists completed a survey and two audiotaped standardized patient interviews. Overall, 41% and 31% of tobacco treatment s
