Exploring the Effect of Gender Norms on Provider-Client Interactions Relevant to HIV Care Engagement: A Qualitative Study in Uganda.

Gender norms shape health behaviors and access to HIV care in sub-Saharan Africa, but few studies have explored their influence on provider-client interactions and care provision. This qualitative study was conducted in central Uganda in 2020, involving 7 focus group discussions and 16 key informant interviews with 57 participants, including clients with HIV (n = 12), health and lay workers (n = 17), community members (n = 12), and key informants with health system expertise (n = 16). Using thematic analysis guided by an adapted patient-centeredness model, findings were organized around biopsy

The Application of a Patient-Centered Care Framework in Mental Health Diversion: A Qualitative Study.

Mental health diversion pairs mental health treatment with court oversight as an alternative to incarceration. We conducted a qualitative exploration of the applicability of a patient-centered care framework-typically applied in healthcare contexts to center the experience of a patient in their own care-to mental health diversion. This study examines (1) if the principles of patient-centered care are experienced by mental health diversion clients and (2) how these principles apply to hybrid healthcare-legal system intervention like mental health diversion. We interviewed 15 diversion clients f

Therapist awareness of client resistance in cognitive-behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder.

Clients' resistance relates negatively to their retention and outcomes in psychotherapy; thus, it has been increasingly identified as a key process marker in both research and practice. This study compared therapists' postsession ratings of resistance with those of trained observers in the context of 40 therapist-client dyads receiving 15 sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder. Therapist and observer ratings were then examined as correlates of proximal (therapeutic alliance quality and homework compliance) and distal (posttreatment worry severity) outcomes. A

Discharge experiences of speech-language pathologists working in Cyprus and Greece.

Post-termination relationships are complex because the client may need additional services and it may be difficult to determine when the speech-language pathologist-client relationship is truly terminated. In my contribution to this scientific forum, discharge experiences from speech-language pathologists working in Cyprus and Greece will be explored in search of commonalities and differences in the way in which pathologists end therapy from different cultural perspectives. Within this context the personal impact on speech-language pathologists of the discharge process will be highlighted. Inh

Is anyone speaking my language?

This paper describes an on-going three-phase action research project undertaken by members of the Norwich Community Trust speech and language therapy adult services team. With the support of the Clinical Audit department the project was set up in order to: 1) investigate the characteristics, needs and aspirations of the population of dysphasic people in the community; 2) examine how dysphasic people and their families perceive the speech and language therapy service; 3) implement specific changes to the speech and language therapy service to dysphasic people and their families. These changes a

Patient compliance: recognition of factors involved and suggestions for promoting compliance with therapeutic regimens.

Patient compliance is paramount in the effectiveness of therapeutic regimens. Without compliance therapeutic goals cannot be achieved, resulting in poorer patient outcomes. The social and psychological factors thought to influence compliance are identified as (a) knowledge and understanding including communication, (b) quality of the interaction including the patient-provider relationship and patient satisfaction, (c) social isolation and social support including the effect of the family, (d) health beliefs and attitudes-health belief model variables, and (e) factors associated with the illnes

Brick Walls and Broken Hearts: Physicians Draw how they Feel About Treating Pain and Addiction.

As part of a continuing medical education activity, primary care physicians in Arizona were asked to draw how they feel about treating patients with chronic pain and addiction. Their drawings, complete with cliffs, walls, torn-out hair, and connected hearts, make for a harrowing look at burnout, angst, and empathy among physicians who treat this subset of patients. Public health and exercise facilitators were troubled, leading them to publish this essay along with a selection of the drawings that depict the feelings of the physicians who feel ill-prepared to treat this patient population, whic

"Gender aware therapy" for professional men in a day treatment center.

High accountability men in the medical, legal, corporate, and mental health professions sometimes engage in behavior that violates their fiduciary responsibilities. These highly skilled men may engage in disruptive or explosive behavior, cross sexual boundaries with clients or patients, abuse substances, or have other psychiatric problems that compromise their workplace performance. When this occurs, licensing boards, professional societies, or supervising executives often require the dysregulated man to seek assistance. This article reports on ways the Professional Renewal Center incorporates
