Proprioceptive Training and Injury Prevention in a Professional Men's Basketball Team: A Six-Year Prospective Study.

Single limb stance instability is a risk factor for lower extremity injuries. Therefore, the development of proprioception may play an important role in injury prevention. This investigation considered a professional basketball team for 6 years, integrating systematic proprioceptive activity in the training routine. The purpose was to assess the effectiveness of proprioceptive training programs based on quantifiable instability, to reduce ankle sprains, knee sprains, and low back pain through developing refined and long-lasting proprioceptive control. Fifty-five subjects were studied. In the f…

Influence of a proprioceptive training on functional ankle stability in young speed skaters - a prospective randomised study.

The influence of a 12-week-proprioceptive training on functional ankle stability was investigated in young speed skaters. Twenty-eight speed skaters were randomly divided into an intervention (n = 14) and into a control group (n = 14). A 15-min circle training was performed 5 times per week over a 12-week period. Measurements were taken prior to the training, after 6 and 12 weeks of training. Kinaesthesia was evaluated with the Isomed2000 in all movements of the ankle joint. Dynamic balance was tested with the Biodex Stability System at the stable level 8 and at the unstable level 2, measuring

Bodily illusions in young children: developmental change in visual and proprioceptive contributions to perceived hand position.

We examined the visual capture of perceived hand position in forty-five 5- to 7-year-olds and in fifteen young adults, using a mirror illusion task. In this task, participants see their left hand on both the left and right (by virtue of a mirror placed at the midline facing the left arm, and obscuring the right). The accuracy of participants' reaching was measured when proprioceptive and visual cues to the location of the right arm were put into conflict (by placing the arms at different distances from the mirror), and also when only proprioceptive information was available (i.e., when the mir

How far do patients with sensory ataxia benefit from so-called "proprioceptive rehabilitation"?

A rehabilitation program including foot sensory stimulation, balance and gait training with limited vision was performed in 24 patients with clinically defined sensory ataxia. There were 15 patients with bilateral somatosensory loss related to chronic neuropathy and nine patients with unilateral loss-related to multiple sclerosis. After training, balance control assessed using the Berg Balance Test improved similarly in both groups, and Romberg's sign disappeared in some patients, suggesting an improvement in dynamic balance and in the proprioceptive contribution. Conversely, balance assessed

Convergent and divergent effects of neck proprioceptive and visual motion stimulation on visual space processing in neglect.

Visual motion stimulation as well as neck muscle vibration are known to effectively modulate the subjective body orientation in spatial neglect. However, so far only motion stimulation has been demonstrated to substantially influence size and space distortion in neglect patients. The present study aimed to compare the two stimulation methods with respect to their potentially differential impact on subjective body orientation and on space and size distortion, in five neglect patients showing perceptual distortions. We found comparable beneficial effects during left motion stimulation and left n

Visual object localisation in space. Interaction of retinal, eye position, vestibular and neck proprioceptive information.

Perceptual updating of the location of visual targets in space after intervening eye, head or trunk movements requires an interaction between several afferent signals (visual, oculomotor efference copy, vestibular, proprioceptive). The nature of the interaction is still a matter of debate. To address this problem, we presented subjects (n=6) in the dark with a target (light spot) at various horizontal eccentricities (up to +/-20 degrees ) relative to the initially determined subjective straight-ahead direction (SSA). After a memory period of 12 s in complete darkness, the target reappeared at

Vestibular responses in the rhesus monkey ventroposterior thalamus. II. Vestibulo-proprioceptive convergence at thalamic neurons.

The vestibular thalamic relay in the Rhesus ventrobasal complex, identified in a previous field potential study (part I, Deecke et al., 1974), has now been investigated with neuronal recordings in the thalamus in order to clarify its functional role. In part I, short latency responses (2.5 msec) were found in the corner between VPL, VPM and VPI nuclei, largely including dorsal portions of the VPI nucleus. Field potentials of somewhat longer latency (4-5 msec) were recorded in VPL and in other thalamic nuclei, including the posterior nuclear group. Neuronal responses were recorded in thalamic n

Thalamic projections from the cerebellar nuclei receiving proprioceptive signals from the jaw muscles in rats.

The neural mechanisms involved in transmission of proprioceptive information from muscles are not fully understood. Proprioceptive signals from jaw-closing muscle spindles (jcms) are relayed to the supratrigeminal nucleus (Su5), and, then, from the Su5 to the thalamus including the oval paracentral nucleus (OPC) via the trigeminal lemniscal pathway and to the jcms-IntDL and jcms-MedDL (the dorsolateral hump of interposed cerebellar nucleus [IntDL] and the dorsolateral protuberance of medial cerebellar nucleus [MedDL], which were electrophysiologically identified to receive jcms-proprioception)…

Assessment of asymmetry across different submodalities of proprioceptive senses and motor skills of the hand in young adults.

Proprioceptive senses, particularly movement-position and force-effort senses enable individuals to perform essential motor functions. Despite their crucial role in the acquisition and execution of motor skills, proprioceptive assessment methods and the specific modalities they evaluate are not clearly defined in the literature. Furthermore, there is a lack of consensus regarding the laterality of proprioceptive senses in the upper extremities. The primary objective of this study is to examine the laterality and differences in movement-position and force-effort senses between the hands and to

Effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation on balance, strength, cognition and ADL'S IN elderly - A randomized control study.

BACKGROUND: A common and significant worry for people in their later year falls. Falls are frequently caused by residual impairments, including decreasing strength, poor sensory processing, balance issues, and cognitive gait inadequacies. Deficits in movement and balance can persist for years and are associated with a high fall rate (>6 months). Neuromuscular re-education by proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation involves stimulating sensory receptors to provide feedback on incorrect movement and posture. OBJECTIVE: To Identify the effects of PNF on Balance, Strength, cognition and ADL. M

Influence of age and feedback modality on the proprioceptive sense of force: insights from motor unit recordings.

The primary purpose of our study was to compare the influence of feedback modality (visual vs. auditory) on force-reproduction accuracy in middle-aged and older adults. As a secondary objective, we investigated whether expected differences would be reflected in the neural drive sent to a hand muscle during the task. Participants (n = 42; 40-84 yr) performed a force-reproduction task with the first dorsal interosseus muscle at two target forces [5% and 20% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC)]. Each trial involved a target phase that was guided by visual or auditory feedback and then a reprod
