Can shear wave elastography predict urodynamic studies in pediatric population? - A prospective study in posterior urethral valve patients.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate bladder dysfunction non-invasively in patients operated for posterior urethral valve (PUV). For this purpose, findings obtained from shear wave elastography (SWE) were compared with simultaneous urodynamic findings. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Bladder functions of patients operated for PUV were examined with a urodynamic study (UDS) and compared with anterior and posterior bladder wall shear wave speed (SWS) measurements. Patients with vesicoureteral reflux were excluded from the study. Anticholinergic treatment that patients had previously used was di

Long-Term Lignan Intake, Whole Grain Foods, and the Risk of Gout: Results From Two Prospective Cohort Studies.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple plant-based dietary patterns are inversely associated with gout, although the individual constituents driving this association remain unclear. Dietary lignans, a major group of phytoestrogens abundant in plant foods, are metabolized by the gut microflora and may modulate gout risk. We examined the associations between dietary lignan intake, certain whole grain foods rich in lignans, and incident gout. METHODS: We analyzed data from 122,680 individuals in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and Nurses' Health Study. We administered a food frequency questionnaire every

Association Between Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prospective Cohort Studies.

Background and Objectives: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent disorder associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) risk. Materials and Methods: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies assessing OSA and incident CV outcomes. Results: From 2463 records, 18 studies (>25,000 participants; median follow-up 9 years) were included. OSA was associated with increased CV risk (pooled HR 1.82, 95% CI 1.45-2.28). Dose-response analysis showed a progressive risk increase: mild OSA (HR 1.21, 95% CI 0.98-1.50), moderate (HR 1.56, 95% CI 1.

Association between red and processed meat consumption and colorectal cancer risk: a comprehensive meta-analysis of prospective studies.

Increasing evidence suggests that red and processed meat consumption may elevate the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), yet the magnitude and consistency of this association remain debated. This meta-analysis aims to quantify the relationship between red and processed meat intake and the risk of CRC, colon cancer, and rectal cancer using the most comprehensive set of prospective studies to date. We conducted a comprehensive search in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Google Scholar databases from 1990 to November 2024, to identify relevant prospective studies examining red, p…

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and perinatal outcomes: two prospective cohort studies of nulliparous women in India and Tanzania.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) have been linked with increased risk for maternal and offspring complications in high-income settings. However, in resource-limited settings, studies with robust measurement of HDP, including severity and timing, and perinatal outcomes are limited. METHODS: We analysed data from two prospective cohorts of nulliparous women in India (n=10 570 pregnancies) and Tanzania (n=10 299 pregnancies) who were enrolled in calcium supplementation trials and had blood pressure and proteinuria assessments throughout pregnancy and at the time of labour

Prospective evaluation of the impact of multi-channel studies on treatment outcomes in children with sleep disordered breathing.

There are significant variations in practice regarding the use of sleep studies in children with symptoms of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) prior to adenotonsillectomy. Current UK guidance recommends the selective use of sleep studies to confirm a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) when there is diagnostic uncertainty, in children with comorbidities, or to assess perioperative risk when severe OSA is suspected. We have developed a novel paediatric sleep service over the past decade based on the routine use of multi-channel sleep studies (MCSS) before adenotonsillectomy. We present t

How should prospective research be designed to legitimately assess the value of urodynamic studies in female urinary incontinence?

AIMS: Since formal evidence demonstrating the value of urodynamic studies (UDS) in functional urology remains elusive, we aimed to consider how best to design robust research for this purpose in female urinary incontinence. METHODS: An expert group was convened to debate the following considerations: (a) precedents for formally proving the value of a gold standard diagnostic test, (b) key research principles, (c) defining a study population, (d) selecting endpoints, (e) defining interventional and controls arms, (f) blinding, (g) powering the study, and (h) duration of follow-up. In each case

The Role of Epidemiological Evidence from Prospective Population Studies in Shaping Dietary Approaches to Therapy in Crohn's Disease.

SCOPE: The concept that dietary factors are key risk and preventive agents in the development of Crohn's disease (CD), while widely believed and supported by epidemiological evidence, has yet to lead to clear identification of those factors through clinical trials. The aims are to examine the strength of the epidemiological evidence of diet and its association with CD, examine how interpretation of mostly epidemiological data has shaped ideas for potential dietary therapies, and to explore other factors that have driven the design of dietary clinical trials in CD. METHODS: A literature search

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome and endothelial function: potential impact of different treatment strategies-meta-analysis of prospective studies.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown an association between obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and cardiovascular events. Whether this association is mediated by an impairment of endothelial function, which is itself a driver of elevated cardiovascular risk, has yet to be clarified, as it is the eventual protective role of several OSAS treatments. The aim of our meta-analysis is to evaluate the effect of various OSAS treatments on endothelial function calculated by means of flow-mediated dilatation (FMD). METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis of prospective studies including patients af…
