Investigating the methodological foundation of lesion network mapping.

Lesion network mapping (LNM) is a neuroimaging framework that uses normative functional connectivity (FC) data to link heterogeneous brain lesions and functional alterations to brain networks implicated in neurological and psychiatric conditions. However, many of the networks identified by LNM and related methods appear to be highly similar across diverse conditions such as addiction, depression, psychosis and epilepsy. To understand this similarity, we re-examined the data from multiple LNM studies and assessed the methodological roots of the method. Our findings reveal a foundational limitat

Acute phantosmia as the first manifestaton of brain metastases in a patient with breast cancer. Case report.

Phantosmia belongs to the group of olfactory dysfunctions. It is more commonly described in psychiatric conditions and some cases of viral infections, but it has been also rarely described in cancer patients who develop primary or metastatic central nervous system tumors; the early identification of this symptom in this population is crucial, as it could lead to timely diagnosis and treatment through a multidisciplinary approach. With the current report we present the case of a 60-year-old lady with metastatic breast cancer and without known preexisting brain metastases, who developed acute ph

Understanding the Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: A Study on Offenders.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is well known for its effectiveness in addressing psychiatric disorders such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder, often used alongside medication. SUMMARY: CBT is used more often in the criminal justice system to help rehabilitate offenders by targeting cognitive distortions affecting their social and decision-making abilities. These maladaptive behaviours and sense of entitlement can result from distortions, which CBT works to address by restructuring thought patterns and encouraging adaptive behaviours. In general

Glucocorticoids-Induced Neuropsychiatric Disorders in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a globally rising chronic intestinal disease that affects individuals in many parts of the world. Immunosuppressive medications such as corticosteroids are used to manage flare-ups and to induce remission in IBD. Corticosteroids are said to cause several systemic symptoms, but they are also associated with drug-induced neuropsychiatric disorders. This article examines the existing data on psychiatric and cognitive effects associated with corticosteroid therapy in relation to IBD. Many studies have found that corticosteroids appear to cause mood disturbances

Forensic Psychiatry versus the Varieties of Delusion-Like Belief.

The available categorical constructs within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, do not allow forensic psychiatrists to distinguish easily between the varieties of delusion-like belief. This dilemma is especially challenging when seemingly delusional beliefs are shared online. Although the term "extreme overvalued belief" has been proposed to aid with such distinctions, its definition has conceptual problems, including diagnostic overlap with shared delusions, "extremism" that refers to behavior rather than belief, and the potential to be applied with prose

Reward prospect improves inhibitory control in female university students with a history of childhood sexual and physical abuse.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Childhood abuse and neglect increase the risk for psychiatric disorders (e.g., depression and anxiety) during adulthood and have been associated with deficits in cognitive control. The specific mechanisms underlying these cognitive control deficits are still unknown. METHODS: This study examined the expectation for reward to improve inhibitory control in young women (ages 18-35 years) with a history of childhood sexual and/or physical abuse (AG, N = 28), childhood emotional and/or physical neglect (NG, N = 30), or unaffected comparison women (HC, N = 40). Predominant Polarity in Bipolar Affective Disorder: A Scoping Review of Its Relationship with Clinical Variables and Its Implications.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar affective disorder (BPAD) is an episodic psychiatric disorder that is associated with considerable morbidity. Psychiatrists have found it difficult to treat the disorder owing to the variety of presentation and variety of challenges in clinical decision-making. To guide the clinicians, the concept of predominant polarity (PP) in BPAD has become important. This review was conducted to understand the definition, epidemiology, relationship with sociodemographic and clinical parameters, and implications of PP in BPAD. METHODOLOGY: The review was conducted after selecting 17 or

Tension Among Women in North India: An Idiom of Distress and a Cultural Syndrome.

The existing literature on Indian ethnopsychology has long asserted that somatization is a key aspect of experiences of distress. The study of idioms of distress arose out of work done in India (Nichter in Cult Med Psychiatry 5(4):379-408, 1981), but ironically, little subsequent work has systematically explored idioms of distress in this part of the world. This ethnographic study focused on the term tension (tenśan) and its relation to a cultural syndrome among women in urban North India. This syndrome appears to involve rapid-onset anger, irritation, rumination, and sleeplessness as key symp

Cognition-related brain networks underpin the symptoms of unipolar depression: Evidence from a systematic review.

This systematic review sources the latest neuroimaging evidence for the role of cognition-related brain networks in depression, and relates their abnormal functioning to symptoms of the disorder. Using theoretically informed and rigorous inclusion criteria, we integrate findings from 59 functional neuroimaging studies of adults with unipolar depression using a narrative approach. Results demonstrate that two distinct neurocognitive networks, the autobiographic memory network (AMN) and the cognitive control network (CCN), are central to the symptomatology of depression. Specifically, hyperactiv

Auditory hallucinations.

Auditory hallucinations constitute a phenomenologically rich group of endogenously mediated percepts which are associated with psychiatric, neurologic, otologic, and other medical conditions, but which are also experienced by 10-15% of all healthy individuals in the general population. The group of phenomena is probably best known for its verbal auditory subtype, but it also includes musical hallucinations, echo of reading, exploding-head syndrome, and many other types. The subgroup of verbal auditory hallucinations has been studied extensively with the aid of neuroimaging techniques, and from

Mood and anxiety disorders as early manifestations of medical illness: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Affective disturbances involving alterations of mood, anxiety and irritability may be early symptoms of medical illnesses. The aim of this paper was to provide a systematic review of the literature with qualitative data synthesis. METHODS: MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EMBASE, Cochrane, and ISI Web of Science were systematically searched from inception to February 2014. Search terms were 'prodrome/early symptom', combined using the Boolean 'AND' operator with 'anxiety/depression/mania/hypomania/irritability/irritable mood/hostility', combined with the Boolean 'AND' operator with 'medical ill

Reasons underlying treatment preference: an exploratory study.

Very little is known about what factors influence women's treatment preferences after a sexual assault. To learn more about these factors, data were collected from 273 women who read a standard "if this happened to you, what would you do" scenario describing a sexual assault and subsequent trauma-related psychiatric symptoms. After reading standardized treatment options for a pharmacotherapy (sertraline) and a psychotherapy (cognitive behavioral treatment), participants made a hypothetical treatment choice and reported the main reasons for their choice. Women often cited reasons surrounding th

Factors associated with drug treatment dropout among injection drug users in Puerto Rico.

This study examined factors associated with drug treatment dropout among injection drug users (IDUs) in Puerto Rico, a group that has contributed significantly to the self-sustaining AIDS epidemic in the island since the mid-1980s. A total of 557 IDUs were recruited from communities in a semirural region of Puerto Rico, as part of a longitudinal study testing the efficacy of a two-facet intervention model, based on motivational interviewing. Of 124 IDUs who had entered drug treatment at follow-up, 33 (26.6%) dropped out before completing all recommended sessions. Multiple logistic regression a

Psychological approaches to the management of respiratory symptoms in children and adolescents.

Acute respiratory symptoms often demand immediate medical attention and can be a frightening experience for parents and children alike. Once immediate medical concerns have been dealt with, the physician may be left with a complex clinical picture of uncertain aetiology. Vocal cord dysfunction, hyperventilation, sighing dyspnoea and psychogenic cough are four well-described clinical syndromes where the aetiology may not be clear. Indeed for a busy clinician, it may also be unclear how to manage these patients and when to refer for more detailed psychological or psychiatric management. This pap

[Value of cytogenetic study in transsexualism].

By reviewing the syndromic manifestation, transsexualism in characterized as a psychiatric entity, apart from homossexualism and transvestism. The two main feasible etiologic causes of transsexualism are discussed: the psychoanalytical hypothesis based upon psycossexual regression with imprinting of maternal figure and the neuroendocrine model which assumes alterations of the gender role identity centers in the hypothalamus. On the grounds of the latter explanation and after the scheme that seems to occure in the Morris syndrome whose cells (XY) do not respond to the masculinizing effect of pl

Childhood Clinical Features Preceding the Onset of Bipolar Versus Major Depressive Disorders During Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To identify childhood psychopathological features that predict the onset of adolescent Bipolar (BD) versus Unipolar Major Depressive Disorder (UD) during adolescence. METHOD: We analyzed clinical data from 495 juveniles diagnosed with DSM-5 UD (n = 359), and BD (n = 136), using bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS: BD subjects exhibited earlier onset of any psychiatric feature compared to UD. Antecedents associated with later BD were: oppositional defiant > specific phobias > ADHD > obsessive compulsive (OCD). Antecedents selectively associated wi

Diffusion Tractography in Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery: A Review.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is believed to exert its therapeutic effects through modulation of brain circuitry, yet conventional preoperative planning does not allow direct targeting or visualization of white matter pathways. Diffusion MRI tractography (DT) is virtually the only non-invasive method of visualizing structural connectivity in the brain, leading many to suggest its use to guide DBS targeting. DT-guided DBS not only has the potential to allow direct white matter targeting for established applications [e.g., Parkinson's disease (PD), essential tremor (ET), dystonia], but may also a

Frigophobia: a case series from Sri Lanka.

Frigophobia is a condition in which patients report coldness of extremities leading to a morbid fear of death. It has been reported as a rare culture-related psychiatric syndrome in Chinese populations. An extensive survey of the literature yielded only six case reports. The present paper describes a series of 109 patients with frigophobia in Sri Lanka. The common clinical presentation was of patients initially examining their extremities for cold sensations, and then, with the onset of fear, covering themselves in layers of clothing, applying emollients, and staying near an open fire in an ef

Studies of "supported" and "supportive" housing: a comprehensive review of model descriptions and measurement.

Supported housing is a service model that couples provision of independent housing with provision of community-based supports for individuals with psychiatric disabilities at risk of homelessness. Despite its promise as an alternative to traditional sequential residential rehabilitation programs, supported housing has not been evaluated to an extent that supports firm conclusions concerning the efficacy of specific program elements. We conducted a comprehensive review of the literature on supported housing and similarly labeled programs, to determine the degree of clarity in the supported hous
