Regions in the cochlea with very few functioning inner hair cells and/or neurons are called "dead regions" (DRs). Previously, we measured the recognition of highpass-filtered nonsense syllables as a function of filter cutoff frequency for hearing-impaired people with and without low-frequency (apical) DRs [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 122, 542-553 (2007)]. DRs were diagnosed using the TEN(HL) test, and psychophysical tuning curves were used to define the edge frequency (fe) more precisely. Stimuli were amplified differently for each ear, using the "Cambridge formula." The present study was similar, but

For deaf patients cochlear implants (CIs) can restore substantial amounts of functional hearing. However, binaural hearing, and in particular, the perception of interaural time differences (ITDs) with current CIs has been found to be notoriously poor, especially in the event of early hearing loss. One popular hypothesis for these deficits posits that a lack of early binaural experience may be a principal cause of poor ITD perception in pre-lingually deaf CI patients. This is supported by previous electrophysiological studies done in neonatally deafened, bilateral CI-stimulated animals showing

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of outcomes received by newly implanted cochlear implant recipients when an outcomes-driven, computer-assisted approach to cochlear implantation fitting was used. This approach, referred to as "Fitting to Outcome eXpert," or FOX, was developed by Otoconsult in Antwerp, Belgium.
DESIGN: Thirty-one newly implanted subjects participated in a nonrandomized, single-subject, repeated measures design that involved a within-subject comparison of preoperative and postoperative speech recognition scores. Sound processors for all subjects were programmed using the FOX

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from chronic, subjective tinnitus are on a quest to find a cure or any form of alleviation for their persistent complaint. Current recommended therapy forms provide psychotherapeutic interventions that are intended to train the patient how to deal with the tinnitus sound. Pharmaceutical managements are used to reduce secondary effects of the tinnitus sound such as sleep deprivation, emotional and concentration difficulties, but these treatments do not cure the tinnitus. Recent studies have shown that Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) significantly improves the qu

BACKGROUND: Little is known about patient factors that might influence outcomes of tinnitus interventions. Determining such factors would offer insights into why some individuals benefit from tinnitus intervention whereas others do not.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate selected patient factors that may be associated with outcomes of tinnitus intervention. Factors studied include demographics, tinnitus characteristics, psychoacoustic tinnitus measures, audiometric data, and overall physical/emotional health status.
RESEARCH DESIGN: A retrospective analysis was performed on d

Extracranial electromagnetic stimulation (EMS) is a recently developed clinical technique which may be used in place of conventional transcutaneous electrical stimulation to activate the central and peripheral nervous systems. This technique is widely used in neurology and otolaryngology for non-invasive stimulation of the brain and facial nerve. EMS uses electromagnetic field pulses which pass unimpeded through the cranium and soft tissues to activate excitable membranes of volume conductors. In this series of studies, the effects and side-effects of electromagnetic stimulation on the auditor

Some blind people use echoes to detect discrete, silent objects to support their spatial orientation/navigation, independence, safety and wellbeing. The acoustical features that people use for this are not well understood. Listening to changes in spectral shape due to the presence of an object could be important for object detection and avoidance, especially at short range, although it is currently not known whether it is possible with echolocation-related sounds. Bands of noise were convolved with recordings of binaural impulse responses of objects in an anechoic chamber to create 'virtual ob

The aim of this study was to investigate whether deficits in auditory processing are associated with auditory hallucinations in patients with schizophrenia. It was hypothesised that individuals with a diagnosis of schizophrenia would demonstrate deficits in processing the spectral and temporal aspects of sound and that such deficits would be more pronounced in patients with a history of auditory hallucinations (hallucinators) than those without such a history (non-hallucinators). A community sample meeting clinical criteria for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (19 hallucinators, 15 no

OBJECTIVE: This study applied bone-conducted vibration (BCV) stimuli at various repetition rates to investigate the effects of repetition rate on both ocular and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs and cVEMPs).
METHODS: Twenty-five healthy subjects underwent oVEMP tests in BCV mode at repetition rates of 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40Hz. The optimal repetition rates (5, 10 and 20Hz) for oVEMPs were also adopted to elicit cVEMPs, and 20Hz stimuli were further evaluated in pathological ears.
RESULTS: At repetition rates of 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40Hz, the prevalence of clear oVEMPs w

OBJECTIVE: To define the ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP and cVEMP) profile in Ménière's Disease (MD), we studied air-conducted (AC) sound and bone-conducted vibration (BCV)-evoked responses in 77 patients and 35 controls.
METHODS: oVEMPs were recorded from unrectified infra-orbital surface electromyography (EMG) during upward gaze. cVEMPs were recorded from rectified and unrectified sternocleidomastoid EMG during head elevation against gravity. Responses to AC clicks delivered via headphones and BC forehead taps delivered with a mini-shaker (bone-conduction vi

Temporal modulation transfer functions were obtained using sinusoidal carriers for four normally hearing subjects and three subjects with mild to moderate cochlear hearing loss. Carrier frequencies were 1000, 2000 and 5000 Hz, and modulation frequencies ranged from 10 to 640 Hz in one-octave steps. The normally hearing subjects were tested using levels of 30 and 80 dB SPL. For the higher level, modulation detection thresholds varied only slightly with modulation frequency for frequencies up to 80 Hz, but decreased for high modulation frequencies. The decrease can be attributed to the detection

In Experiment 1, masking-level differences (MLDs) for a 500-Hz tone at five masker levels were obtained from younger and older adults. For both age groups, there were no reliable increases in MLD once the spectrum level of the masker exceeded 27 dB SPL. MLDs were larger for younger than for older adults over the range of masker levels tested. In Experiment 2, the levels of both the signal and the masker in one ear were attenuated by either 15 or 30 dB relative to their level in the other ear, which was fixed at a spectrum level of 47 dB SPL. MLDs for both age groups declined with increasing IA

In individuals with tinnitus, subtle changes in extended high-frequency (EHF) hearing and suprathreshold auditory processing may contribute to difficulties in complex auditory domains such as music perception. This study aimed to examine musical pitch and timbre perception, spectral-temporal resolution, and EHF hearing in normal-hearing individuals with and without tinnitus, while exploring the relationships among these measures. Individuals with bilateral tinnitus (n = 28) and without tinnitus (n = 28) were included, and all participants had normal conventional audiograms. Participants were a

Occupational noise can damage workers' hearing, and the phenomenon is even more dangerous when noise is associated with an ototoxic solvent. Aromatic solvents are known to provoke chemical-induced hearing loss, but little is known about the effects on hearing of carbon disulfide (CS2) when combined with noise. Co-exposure to CS2 and noise may have a harmful effect on hearing, but the mechanisms involved are not well understood. For instance, CS2 is not thought to have a cochleotoxic effect, but rather it is thought to cause retrocochlear hearing impairment. In other words, CS2 could have a dis

Gamma (γ)-band oscillations play a key role in perception, associative learning, and conscious awareness and have been shown to be disrupted by cannabinoids in animal studies. The goal of this study was to determine whether cannabinoids disrupt γ-oscillations in humans and whether these effects relate to their psychosis-relevant behavioral effects. The acute, dose-related effects of Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ(9)-THC) on the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) were studied in humans (n=20) who completed 3 test days during which they received intravenous Δ(9)-THC (placebo, 0.015, and 0.03 mg/

When two notes are played simultaneously they form a musical dyad. The sensation of pleasantness, or "consonance", of a dyad is likely driven by the harmonic relation of the frequency components of the combined spectrum of the two notes. Previous work has demonstrated a relation between individual preference for consonant over dissonant dyads, and the strength of neural temporal coding of the harmonicity of consonant relative to dissonant dyads as measured using the electrophysiological "frequency-following response" (FFR). However, this work also demonstrated that both these variables correla

Perception of breathy voice quality is cued by a number of acoustic changes including an increase in aspiration noise level (AH) and spectral slope. Changes in AH in a vowel may be evaluated through measures such as the harmonic-to-noise ratio, cepstral peak prominence (CPP), or via auditory measures such as the partial loudness of harmonic energy and loudness of aspiration noise. Although a number of experiments have reported high correlation between such measures and ratings of perceived breathiness, a formal model to predict breathiness of a vowel has not been proposed. This research descri

Thresholds for a 6.5-kHz sinusoidal signal, temporally centered in a 400-ms broadband-noise masker, were measured as a function of signal duration for normally hearing listeners and listeners with cochlear hearing loss over a range of masker levels. For the normally hearing listeners, the slope of the function relating signal threshold to signal duration (integration function) was steeper at medium masker levels than at low or high levels by a factor of nearly 2, for signal durations between 2 and 10 ms, while no significant effect of level was found for signal durations of 20 ms and more. The main impairment associated with single-sided deafness (SSD) is the loss of binaural hearing. Currently, the most effective treatment to compensate for this deficit is to supply patients suffering from SSD with a cochlear implant (CI) in the deaf ear. With this approach binaural hearing abilities can be restored to a certain extent, which is expressed in an improvement in such patients with regard to sound source localization and speech comprehension in noise after receipt of a CI. However, binaural performance of these listeners does not reach the level of normal-hearing listeners. One of
