Mislocalization of tactile stimulation in patients with complex regional pain syndrome.

Complex-Regional-Pain-Syndromes (CRPS) are characterized by sensory, motor and autonomic dysfunctions. Patterns of sensory symptoms suggest changes within the central nervous system (CNS). Recently, we could show substantial reorganization of somatotopic maps within the central nervous system of patients with CRPS using functional imaging techniques (Maihofner et al. Neurology, 2003). These changes were predicted by CRPS pain and mechanical hyperalgesia. In the present study we looked for potential psychophysical correlates of cortical reorganization in CRPS. Sequential pneumatic non-noxious ta

Overview on tools and methods to assess neuropathic trigeminal pain.

This article provides a brief overview of the tools and methods that may be useful to assess neuropathic trigeminal pain. Pain is a complex multidimensional and biopsychosocial experience. While the assessment of neuropathic trigeminal pain is complex, there are several meaningful ways available for the systematic assessment of neuropathic pain and its effects and manifestations. The key to such an analysis is a standardized pain history and examination and a good knowledge of pain mechanisms. Patients can be asked to provide detailed information about their spontaneous pain (ie, stimulus-inde

Distinguishing between clinical impairments due to optic nerve or macular disease.

Many optic neuropathies and subtle maculopathies may have similar clinical presentations. This represents a challenge to the ophthalmologist to distinguish between the two on clinical grounds. These patients may not have obvious signs and their symptoms may be ambiguous. For example, a young man presenting with optic neuritis may have similar complaints to one suffering from central serous retinopathy. Several general principles can be used to distinguish between optic neuropathies and maculopathies. Additionally, specific psychophysical tests can be of help. The most important aspect of the h

Visual processing deficits in dyslexia: receptors or neural mechanisms?

In 1989 and 1990 Grosser and Spafford attributed abnormalities in the peripheral vision of dyslexic subjects to an anomalous distribution of rods and cones. We argue that at the light levels used in these experiments cone responses should dominate both central and peripheral vision. A more likely explanation of their findings is that there is a postreceptoral deficit in the transient visual channel. This hypothesis is supported by independent anatomical, physiological, and psychophysical evidence.

Interaction of optical parameters in the perception of transparency/translucency and their neural representation in the visual cortex.

Transparency and translucency are important visual attributes that serve as cues for object recognition and discrimination. The interaction between light and objects involves complex processes encompassing multiple factors. In this study, we systematically manipulated parameters of light transmission, scattering, and reflection to investigate their effects on perceived transparency/translucency in human subjects. We found that the extinction coefficient, a parameter governing transmission, exerts the greatest influence on perceived transparency/translucency across objects of varying shape comp

These findings show that reciprocal space-time interference can be characterized by combining psychophysics and diffusion modelling and suggest that it reflects perceptual, decisional and contextual influences.

Visual acuity.

Visual acuity is the simplest and most utilized assessment of visual function. Reductions in acuity may result from many causes, including diseases of the macula and associated visual pathways and optical blur. Chart design and the psychophysical procedures employed to determine visual acuity impact measurement reliability and validity. Modern eye charts based on Bailey-Lovie design principles, used in conjunction with standardized psychophysical protocols, may minimize test-retest variability. Visual acuity improves rapidly during the first year of life, maturing more slowly until adult level

Ophthalmologic examinations under the acute influence of alcohol.

Alcohol is the most widely used recreational drug in Western countries. It affects the psychophysical performance in different ways, e.g. by reducing cognitive functions, causing coordination disturbances or impairing vision. Visual impairments both concern oculomotor and visual sensory functions, such as decreased mesopic vision, decreased field of vision and an increase of saccadic eye movements. During cycling trials with alcoholised test persons, repeated measurements of (1.) the time needed to read a 50-word text, (2.) the time to perform a swing test by tenfold touching the moving finger

Electrical stimulation reduces smokers' craving by modulating the coupling between dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex and parahippocampal gyrus.

Applying electrical stimulation over the prefrontal cortex can help nicotine dependents reduce cigarette craving. However, the underlying mechanism remains ambiguous. This study investigates this issue with functional magnetic resonance imaging. Thirty-two male chronic smokers received real and sham stimulation over dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) separated by 1 week. The neuroimaging data of the resting state, the smoking cue-reactivity task and the emotion task after stimulation were collected. The craving across the cue-reactivity task was diminished during real stimulation as comp

Force-Rate Cues Reduce Object Deformation Necessary to Discriminate Compliances Harder than the Skin.

Grasping and manipulating an object requires us to perceive its material compliance. Compliance is thought to be encoded by relationships of force, displacement, and contact area at the finger pad. Prior work suggests that objects must be sufficiently deformed to become discriminable, but the utility of time-dependent cues has not been fully explored. The studies herein find that the availability of force-rate cues improve compliance discriminability so as to require less deformation of stimulus and finger pad. In particular, we tested the impact of controlling force-rate and displacement-rate

Intranasal trigeminal sensitivity: measurements before and after nasal surgery.

Nasal surgeries constitute an extensive manipulation of the nasal mucosa and therefore of structures related to trigeminal and olfactory sensitivity. While olfactory changes due to nasal surgery are relatively well investigated, there are only very few studies regarding trigeminal sensitivity. Aim of the present study was to investigate sensory changes after nasal surgery with special regard to the trigeminal sensitivity. In 38 patients prior to and around 12 weeks after nasal surgery the following psychophysical measures were performed: odor identification, odor discrimination, phenyl ethyl a

Neuroimaging of muscle pain in humans.

Neuroimaging has provided important information on how acute and chronic pain is processed in the human brain. The pain experience is now known to be the final product of activity in distributed networks consisting of multiple cortical and subcortical areas. Due to the complex nature of the pain experience, a single cerebral representation of pain does not exist. Instead, pain depends on the context in which it is experienced and is generated through variable expression of the different aspects of pain in conjunction with modulatory influences. While considerable data have been generated about

Agnosia for global patterns: When the cross-talk between grouping and visual selective attention failS.

We present a single case study of a 72-year-old mild AD patient, MC, with a highly specific deficit in deriving the global pattern of visual stimuli, in the absence of visuospatial neglect. MC shows a specific difficulty in segregating overlapping figures, in object decision, and in all neuropsychological tasks requiring perception of a global structure from local cues, such as the Street Completion Test and the perception of illusory contours and of the global level of hierarchical stimuli. The detailed neuropsychological assessment prompted a psychophysical experiment aiming to quantify the

Connecting the dots - recognition of artificial and natural shapes relies on representing points of high information.

Physiological and psychophysical evidence suggests that the visual system represents object outlines using prominent curvature features, particularly regions of extreme curvature (convex maxima and concave minima). These curvature extrema often coincide with points of high informational content ("surprisal"), but this relationship is only correlational. It remains unclear whether the visual system explicitly encodes curvature extrema or instead prioritizes the most informative contour locations. To address this, we conducted two shape-matching experiments comparing the roles of curvature extre

Shape distortions and Gestalt grouping in anorthoscopic perception.

When a figure moves behind a stationary narrow slit, observers often report seeing the figure as a whole, a phenomenon called slit viewing or anorthoscopic perception. Interestingly, in slit viewing, the figure is perceived compressed along the axis of motion. As with other perceptual distortions, it is unclear whether the perceptual space in the vicinity of the slit or the representation of the figure itself undergoes compression. In a psychophysical experiment, we tested these two hypotheses. We found that the percept of a stationary bar, presented within the slit, was not distorted even whe

The eyes have it: Oculomotor exploration and line bisection in neglect.

In this issue of Cortex, Ishiai et al. (2006) report the eye movements of patients with left neglect during the bisection of lines of different lengths. This is the latest in a series of papers from Ishiai's group, which form an important corpus of data on the oculomotor behaviour of neglect patients during line bisection and related tasks. In this article, I argue that these data should critically constrain theoretical models of bisection errors in neglect, but that these constraints have been applied rarely in practice. First, I briefly introduce bisection behaviour in neglect and describe s

Regional variation in the inversion effect for faces: differential effects for feature shape, feature configuration, and external contour.

Faces are perceived via an orientation-dependent expert mechanism. We previously showed that inversion impaired perception of the spatial relations of features more in the lower face than in the (more salient) upper face, suggests a failure to rapidly process this type of structural data from the entire face. In this study we wished to determine if this interaction between inversion and regional salience, which we consider a marker for efficient whole-face processing, was specific to second-order (coordinate) spatial relations or also affected other types of structural information in faces. We

Eye movements affect the perceived speed of visual motion.

Eye movements add a constant displacement to the visual scene, altering the retinal-image velocity. Therefore, in order to recover the real world motion, eye-movement effects must be compensated. If full compensation occurs, the perceived speed of a moving object should be the same regardless of whether the eye is stationary or moving. Using a pursue-fixate procedure in a perceptual matching paradigm, we found that eye movements systematically bias the perceived speed of the distal stimulus, indicating a lack of compensation. Speed judgments depended on the interaction between the distal stimu
