OBJECTIVE: To present data on psychometric properties of the Psychosocial Assessment Tool 2.0_General (PAT), a brief screener for psychosocial risk in families of youth with medical conditions, in youth with headache.
BACKGROUND: Emotional and behavioral disturbances, parent distress, and poor family functioning are common among youth with recurrent migraine and tension-type headache; however, tools to comprehensively screen family and psychosocial risk in youth with headache are not currently available. AIM: The primary aim was to examine differences in baseline symptom expression, neurocognition, social cognition and psychosocial functioning between Dutch, first-generation immigrants and second-generation immigrants with a first-episode psychosis (FEP). The secondary aim was to examine functional and symptomatic change and between-group differences at 12-months follow-up. Associations between migration, baseline characteristics and outcome were explored.
METHODS: Forty-six Dutch, 56 second-generation- and 60 first-generation immigrant patients completed baseline measures for 6 symptom dimen…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Poor psychosocial functioning in bipolar disorder often persists even after affective symptom remission. Cognitive deficits, which have emerged as a core feature of bipolar disorder in the past few years, are among the factors implicated in adverse psychosocial outcomes of patients suffering from bipolar disorder. This review aims to overview recent literature on the association of neurocognition and psychosocial functioning in bipolar disorder.
RECENT FINDINGS: Cognitive deficits (mainly general neurocognitive functioning, attention and verbal learning and memory) are impo…

BACKGROUND: Despite achieving clinical remission, patients with depression encounter difficulties to return to their premorbid psychosocial functioning. Cognitive dysfunction has been proposed to be a primary mediator of functional impairment. Therefore, the new non-pharmacological procognitive strategy INtegral Cognitive REMediation for Depression (INCREM) has been developed with the aim of targeting cognitive and psychosocial functioning.
METHODS: This is a single-blind randomized controlled clinical trial with three treatment arms. Fifty-two depressed patients in clinical remission, with p…

BACKGROUND: Children with hypospadias, being born with congenital abnormalities, having repeated genital examination, hospitalization, and undewent genital surgery, experienced psychological stress that may negatively affect their psychosocial life. Choosing the proper time of surgery as recommended is important, since it may have a positive impact on the psychosocial adaptation.
AIM: This study aims to find the risk factors causing psychosocial disorders in post-repair surgery on hypospadias children.

INTRODUCTION: Apart from impacting motor functioning, Parkinson’s disease (PD) also impacts emotional and social aspects of life. Psychosocial difficulties can influence independence, relationships, and overall quality of life. Gender roles and expectations may shape how these problems are experienced. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate gender-related differences in psychosocial functioning among patients with PD using the Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson’s Disease–Psychosocial Functioning (SCOPA-PS). METHODS: Data was analysed for patients with PD who were prospectively recruited betwee…

BACKGROUND: Deficits in metacognition are one of the major causes of the difficulties experienced by individuals with schizophrenia. Studies have linked these deficits to symptom exacerbation and deterioration in psychosocial functioning. The aim of the present meta-analysis was to examine the extensive existing literature regarding metacognitive deficits among persons with schizophrenia; a further aim was to assess the extent to which metacognitive abilities are linked to outcome measures of symptoms and psychosocial functioning.
METHOD: We conducted a systematic literature search of studies…

This study replicates an earlier naturalistic-prospective investigation of nontreatment, community DSM-III-R dysthymia subjects. Major goals were to determine spontaneous remission rates and monitor the stability of psychosocial functioning levels over time. Twenty-four dysthymia subjects were followed for 1 year. Three remissions (13%) were diagnosed at the final interview. At a 4-year diagnostic follow-up contact with the remitters only, one remitter had relapsed and two remained in remission. Subjects were monitored for depressive symptom intensity, personality functioning, general medical …

Parental overprotection has often been clinically associated with the psychological maladjustment of children with a chronic disease. The purpose of this study was to examine parental care and overprotection in children with cystic fibrosis compared to healthy controls. Results indicated no differences in the level of parental care or overprotection between controls and children with cystic fibrosis. However, a number of significant correlations were found between parental care and overprotection and children's psychosocial functioning. In particular, positive correlations were found between p…

The existing literature is inconsistent about the psychosocial functioning of children and adolescents with Unilateral Congenital Below Elbow Deficiency (UCBED). The objective of this qualitative study was to explore the psychosocial functioning of children and adolescents with UCBED in terms of their feelings about the deficiency and what helps them to cope with those feelings. Additionally, the perspectives of prosthesis wearers and non-wearers were compared, as were the perspectives of children, adolescents, parents and health professionals. Online focus group interviews were carried out wi…

AIM: Childhood-onset Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) has been associated with an increased vulnerability to psychosis, yet no prospective studies have examined this risk in paediatric populations.
METHODS: In this pilot prospective study, 59 adolescents with a primary diagnosis of OCD were assessed at baseline for psychotic vulnerability, measured through Cognitive-Perceptual basic symptoms (COPER) and the high-risk criterion Cognitive Disturbances (COGDIS), as well as for OCD severity and psychosocial functioning. The number of subjects who developed a first episode of psychosis (FEP) du…

A total of 37 participants were randomly assigned to either a CBT group or a control group. Measures of depression, dysthymia, psychosocial functioning and seizure frequency were completed at pre and post intervention. Seizure frequency was significantly reduced in the CBT group compared to the control…

The purpose of this study was to document the functional severity of DSM-5 IED in a clinical research sample. IED and control groups were compared on psychosocial functioning, life satisfaction, and on a variety of cognitive and behavioral issues. IED study participants reported significantly worse psychosocial function, quality of life, and higher job dysfunction than both psychiatric and healthy control study participants. The presence of DSM-5 IED is associated with significant psychosocial and functional impairment. Early intervention may aid in minimizing the consequences of impulsive agg…
