Public health scholars are increasingly interested in the Marxist concept of alienation to explain the existence of health inequities. Marx's use of the term stresses the crucial role of political economic structural factors in creating alienation. This article reports on a narrative review of literature that used Marx's theory of alienation and focuses on the mental and/or physical health effects of alienation. Despite high prevalence of infectious diseases and substance use disorders in jails, there are limited guidelines for the nursing intake process in this setting. We performed a content analysis of nursing intake forms used at each of the 14 Massachusetts county jails, focusing on infectious disease and substance use disorder. During March-July 2018, the Illinois Department of Public Health responded to an acute outbreak of severe coagulopathy among patients with recent synthetic cannabinoid use. Toxicological testing indicated that cases were exposed to brodifacoum, a long-acting anticoagulant rodenticide.
