INTRODUCTION: Age and duration of deafness significantly affect the auditory nerve (AN) health of cochlear implant (CI) users. In this study, we examine how age and duration of deafness impact Electrically Evoked Compound Action Potential (ECAP) amplitudes when the Inter-Pulse Interval (IPI) parameter in ECAP measurements is varied.
METHODS: Our participants were thirty-one Mandarin-speaking CI users with Nurotron/CS-20A (19 males and 12 females, 33 ears, aged 6-66 yrs). We investigated eleven distinct IPI settings, ranging from 290 μs to 590 μs (IPI = 290, 330, 350, 390, 410, 450, 470, 510, …

BACKGROUND: The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is an important marker of arterial stiffness, providing a blood pressure-independent assessment of vascular function. However, the clinical significance of low CAVI values remains unclear. Some connective tissue diseases are associated with aortic diseases due to intrinsic arterial wall abnormalities and may exhibit low CAVI values. This study aimed to investigate whether low CAVI is associated with these connective tissue diseases and succeeding aortic diseases.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a single-center, retrospective observational study

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is triggered by emotional or physical stress and characterized by transient left ventricular wall motion abnormalities in the absence of coronary culprit lesion.
CASE SUMMARY: A 76-year-old woman underwent pulse field ablation (PFA) for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. While ST-segment elevation and cardiac dysfunction were observed during the procedure, emergent coronary angiography showed no significant stenosis. The following day, left ventricular wall motion was almost normalized with T-wave inversion and prolonged QT interval. She was diagnosed with TT…

Recent progress in the field of tactile coding suggests that discrimination of texture may involve the instantaneous kinematic analysis of frictional stick-slip movements. The idea has received support from analytical psychophysical experiments employing changes of pulsatile skin deflections in a well-adapted state, i.e. when changing repetitive pulsatile stimulation from one pulse shape to another. Here we investigated whether perception of pulse shapes is possible with single, isolated pulses. In other words, whether the well-described neuronal "onset-responses" in central parts of the tacti…

In this work, a new method to enhance the sensing response of an ultrasonically catalyzed metal oxide gas sensor has been proposed and developed, in which pulse ultrasound is employed to enhance the redox reaction at the sensing surface. It is experimentally confirmed that with a proper pulse width, the negative effect of acoustic streaming on the ultrasonic enhancement process can be effectively suppressed. Comparing the steady responses of five target gases under the pulse and continuous ultrasound, respectively, it is found that the pulse ultrasound causes a better catalysis effect, and res…

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy complications related to hypertension can affect both mother and newborn. Pulse wave attenuation (PWA) captured through fingertip photoplethysmography (PPG) provide valuable insights into maternal acute hemodynamic and autonomic vascular function. Here, we quantify the nocturnal dynamics of PWA during early pregnancy and assess their association with the development of gestational hypertension, preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.
METHODS: PWA dynamics were assessed on overnight polysomnography-derived PPG signals from a cohort of 2714 pregnant women (mean age: 26.8 ± …

BACKGROUND: The mortality of patients infected with hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) was higher. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) on HAE in rats and explore the related molecular mechanisms.
METHODS: Establishment of HAE rat model and the lesions were treated with nsPEFs. The RNA of lesions in the high voltage nsPEFs treatment group and model group were extracted, and lncRNA and mRNA sequence analyses was performed. After obtaining the differentially expressed lncRNAs and mRNAs between the two groups, enrichment…

UNLABELLED: Home pulse oximeters prescribed for infants with cardiorespiratory conditions generate many false alarms, which create caregiver stress and sleep disturbance and can lead to unsafe practices. Additionally, relationships among oximeters, alarms, and everyday living demands are not well understood. Therefore, we aimed to gather parent perspectives on home pulse oximetry monitoring during the problem analysis phase of a quality improvement (QI) initiative.
METHODS: We purposively sampled and interviewed parents of infants prescribed home pulse oximeters and receiving local home care …

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of objective measures to assess children with acute wheezing episodes. Increased respiratory rate (RR) and pulsus paradoxus (PP) are recognised markers, but poorly recorded in practice. We examined whether they can be reliably assessed from a pulse oximeter plethysmogram ('pleth') trace and predict clinical outcome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 44 children aged 1-7 years attending hospital with acute wheeze, following initial 'burst' bronchodilator therapy (BT), and used custom software to measure RR and assess PP from oximeter pleth traces. Traces were examined…

Azathioprine, a purine synthesis inhibitor is widely used as an effective immunosuppressant in several immune mediated diseases, usually in a dose of 2 to 2.5 mg/kg per day. The pulse dose of azathioprine is an unique once weekly dosing regimen, which has been used as an alternative to daily dose regimen in some immune mediated dermatologic disorders. In this review, we looked at a specific dosing regimen, "weekly azathioprine pulse" with respect to its efficacy and safety in the treatment of dermatologic diseases. We performed a literature search for studies on azathioprine weekly pulse in de…

We investigated the perception of two mechanoreceptive modalities alone and in combination: main effects and interaction between auditory and somatosensory stimulation in mice. Fifteen C57BL/6J mice between the ages of 1 and 6 months were tested three times each. Experimental design roughly followed published procedures using pre-pulse inhibition (PPI) of the acoustic startle response, except pre-pulses included vibration of the test chamber as well as soft sounds. Auditory pre-pulses were 80 dB broadband noises of 4, 9, 25, or 45 ms duration. Vibrations were of the same duration but of differ…

BACKGROUND: Coarctation of the aorta is a common form of critical congenital heart disease that remains challenging to diagnose prior to clinical deterioration. Despite current screening methods, infants with coarctation may present with life-threatening cardiogenic shock requiring urgent hospitalization and intervention. We sought to improve critical congenital heart disease screening by using a novel pulse oximetry waveform analysis, specifically focused on detection of coarctation of the aorta.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Over a 2-year period, we obtained pulse oximetry waveform data on 18 neonat…

The jugular venous pulse (JVP) is the reference physiological signal used to detect right atrial and central venous pressure (CVP) abnormalities in cardio-vascular diseases (CVDs) diagnosis. Invasive central venous line catheterization has always been the gold standard method to extract it reliably. However, due to all the risks it entails, novel non-invasive approaches, exploiting distance cameras and lasers, have recently arisen to measure the JVP at the external and internal jugular veins. These remote options however, constraint patients to very specific body positions in front of the imag…
