BACKGROUND: Synthetic azo compounds and their derivatives have been studied extensively due to their biological and pharmacological activities. Pyranopyridines, pyranopyrimidines and tetrazoles derivatives have emerged as a promising and attractive scaffold in the development of potent biological and pharmacological agents.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate ameliorative effects of Homalium nepalense Benth. (Flacourtiaceae) on CCl4-induced hepatocellular injury in rats. Here, we report different lipophilic toxins (LTs) detected by LC-MS/MS in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected through 2012 in Todos Santos Bay, northwest Baja California, Mexico. The neuraminidase inhibitors (NAIs) are the most commonly used class of influenza antiviral drugs for the treatment of infected patients. The dinoflagellate Karenia brevis is known for the production of brevetoxins, a family of polycyclic ether toxins, as well as their antagonist brevenal. Further examination of organic extracts of K. brevis has uncovered yet another unprecedented cyclic ether alkaloid named brevisamide. This report describes the structure elucidation of brevisamide based on detailed MS and NMR spectral analysis, and the importance of this new compound in shedding light on the biogenesis of fused polyethers is discussed.
