Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology : the official journal for the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, American Psychological Association, Division 532025eng
OBJECTIVE: Racially marginalized adolescents are exposed to online racism, yet little is known about assets and resources that may effectively resist the negative influence of online racism and with what effect. Based on risk and resilience theory, the current study examined the compensatory and protective roles of different parental mediation strategies in overcoming the risk of online racial discrimination for Black and Latino adolescents' psychosocial distress.
METHODS: A total of 356 Black and Latino adolescents (Mage = 16.01 ± 1.60; 78.92% female) completed an online survey. Youth report…

Segregation is a multidimensional phenomenon deeply entwined with historical, social, and ecological contexts. The ecology of segregation framework explores how social norms institutionalize racism, classism, and power dynamics to drive inequitable patterns of environmental benefits and hazards. The ecology of segregation has thus far been applied in the Global North, yet is relevant but not as well studied in the Global South and specifically Latin America. More work is needed to consider how the framework can be applied in other historic, sociocultural, and governance contexts. This paper ap…

PURPOSE: To improve health equity, dental and medical students must have a firm grasp of the proper use of race as a social construct. The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which an innovative learning event affected students' understanding of race as a social construct. It also sought to examine the effects that personally experienced and/or witnessed racism and previous education had on students' responses to the learning event.
METHODS: In 2022, all incoming first-year dental (N = 48) and medical (N = 114) students completed an online pre-matriculation assignment about t…

Patients from racial-ethnic minority groups undergo disparate electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatment compared with Caucasian peers. One l … CT for patients of color is contingent on clinicians transcending the limitations posed by aversive racism to develop culturally unbiased, clinically indicated diagnostic and treatment rationales.

Correctional staff suffer high rates of posttraumatic stress disorder compared to military veterans, and the suicide rate among correctional officers is twice as high as that of both police officers and the general population and higher than that of all other professions combined. Correctional facilities' physician employees are at risk of not only burnout but also other adverse mental health effects related to working in a correctional facility. Prison reform efforts should address the needs of both inmates and clinical staff.

The purpose of this column is to summarize important aspects of the racialized War on Drugs, including (a) the school-to-prison pipeline, (b) the for-profit prison system ("prison industrial complex"), (c) racialized mass incarceration, and (d) the disproportionately negative impact of the War on Drugs on families and communities of color. Analysis of critical race theory (CRT), the study of the relationships between race, racism, and power, will provide a cohesive framework for examining these four aspects. CRT maintains that American laws, including antidiscrimination laws, are structured to…

Health disparities continue to plague racial and ethnic underserved patients in the United States. Disparities extend to the most critically ill patients, including those experiencing neurologic injury and patients at the end of life. Achieving health equity in palliative care in the neurointensive care unit requires clinicians to acknowledge and address structural racism and the social determinants of health. This article highlights racial and ethnic disparities in neurocritical care and palliative care and offers recommendations for an anti-racist approach to palliative care in the neurointe…

Despite available treatment options for addiction, there remains an abysmal uptake of treatment initiation and engagement among varying communities. The existing treatment gap is based on historical occurrences, including discriminatory drug policies that have targeted communities of color with addiction. The current opioid epidemic and differential treatment therein exemplifies the severity of the existing disparity in addiction treatment, highlighting barriers such as institutionalized racism and vulnerabilities in the social determinants of health. To mitigate the disparity, an array of sol…

Colorism is a skin-tone stratification system that privileges proximity to Eurocentric features and disadvantages darker skin tones and Afrocentric features. Although colorism is increasingly recognized as a gendered social determinant of health, its role in shaping sexual health among Black and Brown girls and women remains understudied. This rapid review synthesized peer-reviewed empirical evidence on the relationship between colorism, skin tone, and sexual health outcomes among girls and women. Searches were conducted in PsycINFO and PubMed between April and May 2026. After removing duplica

Model Minority expectations for Asian Americans have been in circulation for more than seven decades, and their grip on the Asian American psyche endures to the present day. In previous papers, the author addressed Asian American compliance with these expectations as a trauma-based, identifying-with-aggressor adaptation to the anti-Asian racism in American society: Reeling from the long history of racial discrimination that culminated in the incarceration of 120,000 individuals of Japanese origin during WWII, Asian Americans embraced compliance and model citizenship as a way of survival. In th…

AIMS: To measure the associations between racial discrimination and distinct alcohol and other drug use outcomes in minoritised racial/ethnic groups and to explore the moderating roles of demographic and methodological characteristics.
METHODS: Quantitative studies including racial discrimination as an exposure (both binary and continuous), an alcohol and/or other drug use outcome and a minoritised racial/ethnic sample were identified via database, citation and journal searching. 130 studies contributing 273 effect sizes, across seventeen distinct outcomes, were included in this analysis. This article examines the epidemiology of the US juvenile legal system, which disproportionately impacts youth with multiple marginalized identities and exacerbates health inequities. Policy changes that can improve the treatment of children who display disruptive behavior are highlighted, so as to lay out a path forward for supporting children and enhancing health equity while bolstering public safety. Finally, this article concludes that the systemic racism pervasive in the juvenile legal system signals an important role for pediatrics to advance racial equity and transform our approach to c…

Stigma toward pregnant and postpartum people who use drugs is common and seeks to define addiction as a moral weakness rather than a chronic medical illness that requires resources and treatment. More concerning is the additive impact of substance use and racial discrimination, whose intersections present particularly challenging circumstances. In this article, the authors review the history of substance use in the United States and focus on 3 substances of abuse that illustrate the inequity faced by pregnant person of color who use drugs.

Implicit racial bias in healthcare settings can impact delivery of patient care. Exploration of this bias is necessary to improve patient experiences. We sought to understand implicit racial bias among graduates of accredited genetic counseling programs in the United States and Canada in the class of 2020 as they enter the genetics workforce and assess how this bias is associated with training and life experiences. Implicit racial bias was quantified through use of the Black-White Implicit Association Test (BW-IAT). Participants also completed an online survey focused on didactic and clinical

In 1996, Cynthia García Coll and colleagues introduced a groundbreaking model that articulated factors that influenced the development of ethnic-racial minority and immigrant youth. One of the key arguments was that racial discrimination is a stratification mechanism resulting in negative developmental outcomes for minority youth, and this argument has been supported by several meta-analyses. Against the backdrop of the rise of White nationalism, increasing hate crimes against ethnic-racial minority individuals, implementation of national policies that disproportionately affect communities of

Sarcoidosis is a chronic, multisystem, inflammatory disorder that is characterized by noncaseating granulomas that cause organ dysfunction with various clinical subphenotypes. The incidence and prevalence of sarcoidosis varies greatly by ethnic background. There are significant racial disparities in prevalence, severity, and outcomes; however, there is a dearth of studies investigating the impact of structural racism. The skin is often the presenting and second most frequently involved organ with significant implications on diagnosis and management in patients with darkly pigmented skin. Worku…
