A Simple Method for Human Whole Blood Microcultures and Its Application in Radiation Biodosimetry.

The scoring of the cytokinesis-block micronucleus and dicentric chromosomes in human peripheral blood lymphocytes is used as a dosimeter of radiation exposure. A detailed methodology is presented for human whole blood microculture for cytogenetic analysis. The technique described yields more than sufficient numbers of mitotic lymphocytes for analyzing micronuclei and chromosome aberrations following exposure to radiation.

A soil radiological quality guideline value for wildlife-based protection in uranium mine rehabilitation.

A soil guideline value for radiological protection of the environment was determined for the impending rehabilitation of Ranger uranium mine in the wet-dry tropics of northern Australia. The guideline value was 1000 Bq kg(-1) of (226)Ra in the proposed waste rock substrate of the rehabilitated landform and corresponded to an above-baseline dose rate of 100 μGy h(-1) to the most highly exposed individuals of the limiting organism. The limiting organism was reptile based on an assessment using site-specific concentration ratio data.

Measurements of natural radioactivity and the resulting radiation doses from commercial granites.

Saudi Arabia is becoming a relatively large market for local and foreign marble and granite use in dwellings. Due to increasing concern about environmental radiological protection, different types of locally widely used granite tiles were collected from different suppliers in the Jeddah province, Saudi Arabia. The analysis for these granite tiles for gamma radiation was conducted by means of a high-resolution HPGe gamma-spectroscopy system. The activity concentrations of (232)Th, (226)Ra and 40K in the selected granite samples ranged from 4.9 to 144, 9.7 to 133 and 168 to 1806 Bq kg(-1), respe

Modelling radiation fluxes in simple and complex environments: basics of the RayMan model.

Short- and long-wave radiation flux densities absorbed by people have a significant influence on their energy balance. The heat effect of the absorbed radiation flux densities is parameterised by the mean radiant temperature. This paper presents the physical basis of the RayMan model, which simulates the short- and long-wave radiation flux densities from the three-dimensional surroundings in simple and complex environments. RayMan has the character of a freely available radiation and human-bioclimate model. The aim of the RayMan model is to calculate radiation flux densities, sunshine duration

Indoor radon.

The naturally radioactive but chemically inert gas, radon, is formed from the radioactive decay of radium which is part of the uranium series. Radon gas, which has a half life of 3.8 days, must escape from soil particles through air-filled pores in order to enter the atmosphere following the decay of radium. The concentration of radon in the atmosphere varies, depending on the place, time, height above the ground and meteorological conditions. It is thus an inescapable source of radiation exposure, both at home and at work. The potential hazards posed by exposure to radiation from indoor radon

Uncertainties in radiation effect predictions for the natural radiation environments of space.

Future manned missions beyond low earth orbit require accurate predictions of the risk to astronauts and to critical systems from exposure to ionizing radiation. For low-level exposures, the hazards are dominated by rare single-event phenomena where individual cosmic-ray particles or spallation reactions result in potentially catastrophic changes in critical components. Examples might be a biological lesion leading to cancer in an astronaut or a memory upset leading to an undesired rocket firing. The risks of such events appears to depend on the amount of energy deposited within critical sensi

Variables influencing radiation exposure during extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. Review of 298 treatments.

Retrospective review of 298 extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) treatments was undertaken to determine the factors which influence radiation exposure during ESWL. Fluoroscopy time averaged 160 seconds (3-509), and the average number of spot films taken per patient was 26 (5-68). The average stone burden was 19.3 mm (3-64). Average calculated skin surface radiation exposure was 17.8 R per treatment. Radiation exposure increased with increasing stone burden and patient weight. Stones treated in the ureter resulted in a higher average patient radiation exposure than for renal stones (19

Engineered injectable alginate hydrogel for radiotherapy spacing: Achieving controllable degradation and real-time imaging tracking.

Radiation therapy, a core cancer treatment, uses high-energy rays to kill tumor cells but damages surrounding healthy tissues, limiting efficacy and causing side effects. Thus, protecting normal tissues is key to better radiotherapy outcomes. Spacers form a physical barrier between normal and tumor tissues to reduce radiation to healthy cells, vital for protection. However, current spacers are non-degradable, lack imaging capabilities, or have poor biocompatibility, hindering monitoring during treatment and safe metabolism post-treatment. This study developed an injectable calcium alginate hyd

[Ionizing radiation and health: data and objectives].

Three dimensions must be considered to analyze the consequences of exposure to ionozing radiation on public health: assessment of exposure, measure of the public health risk, and monitoring the perception of risk by the population. We reviewed these three dimension for several situations of exposure to ionizing radiation: exposure related to the Chernobyl accident, occupational exposure, military-related exposure and medical exposure. For each situation, we discuss the pertinence of available data an monitoring systems used in France, and propose when necessary new systems. An extension of the

Maintaining Serum Hemoglobin Levels Within the Physiological Range Prevented Bladder Tamponade Recurrence Due to Radiation-Induced Hemorrhagic Cystitis: A Case Report.

Radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis is a refractory disease that can cause severe hematuria and bladder tamponade. Bladder tamponade due to radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis can often recur repeatedly and markedly reduce the quality of life. However, no blood test parameter has been studied yet regarding the prevention of bladder tamponade recurrence. An 84-year-old patient with a history of radiation therapy for cervical cancer was repeatedly hospitalized for bladder tamponade due to radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. At each hospitalization, blood transfusions were performed to

Investigating the Spectral Characteristics of High-Temperature Gases in Low-Carbon Chemical Pool Fires and Developing a Spectral Model.

Low-carbon chemical fires pose significant hazards, and remote sensing of high-temperature gas emissions from these fires is a critical method for identifying and assessing their environmental impact. Analyzing the spectral characteristics of gases produced by low-carbon chemical pool fires and developing spectral radiation models can establish a foundation for remote pollution monitoring. However, such studies remain scarce. Using a custom-built high-temperature gas spectroscopy platform, this study extracts spectral features of gases emitted by low-carbon chemical pool fires. We investigate

RADIANCE: An automated, enterprise-wide solution for archiving and reporting CT radiation dose estimates.

There is growing interest in the ability to monitor, track, and report exposure to radiation from medical imaging. Historically, however, dose information has been stored on an image-based dose sheet, an arrangement that precludes widespread indexing. Although scanner manufacturers are beginning to include dose-related parameters in the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) headers of imaging studies, there remains a vast repository of retrospective computed tomographic (CT) data with image-based dose sheets. Consequently, it is difficult for imaging centers to monitor their d

Putative role of NF-κB-mediated inflammation in acute cardiac injury induced by S-band microwave radiation in rats.

With the widespread adoption of wireless communication technology, the issue of environmental exposure to microwave radiation has become increasingly prominent. In the field of cardiovascular research, it has been observed that microwave radiation may have potential effects on target organs such as the heart. However, the dynamic evolution characteristics of this radiation over time and its relationship with inflammation still require further exploration. This study aimed to establish a rat model of uniform whole-body exposure to S-band microwaves. A range of methods were used, including detec

Stray light correction on array spectroradiometers for optical radiation risk assessment in the workplace.

The European directive 2006/25/EC requires the employer to assess and, if necessary, measure the levels of exposure to optical radiation in the workplace. Array spectroradiometers can measure optical radiation from various types of sources; however poor stray light rejection affects their accuracy. A stray light correction matrix, using a tunable laser, was developed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As tunable lasers are very expensive, the purpose of this study was to implement this method using only nine low power lasers; other elements of the correction matrix b

Optimization of doses received by the hospital staff and the members of the family of patients undergoing 111In-DTPA-D-Phe1-Octreotide therapy.

According to the Euratom Directives (96/29, 97/43), the doses received by the workers as well as the family of patients and third persons during medical exposures, should conform to the dose constraint levels (DCLs), established by the authorities for each group in the context of optimisation. This study deals with the implementation of a radiation protection protocol, concerning the aforementioned group members for patients undergoing treatment with 111In-DTPA-D-Phe1-Octreotide, after intra-arterial infusion. It is shown that by applying this protocol the annual doses to the medical and techn
