Langerhans cells in odontogenic tumours and cysts as detected by S-100 protein immunohistochemistry.

Immunohistochemical demonstration of S-100 protein in Langerhans cells (LCs) was made in odontogenic epithelial tumours (71 cases), radicular cysts (40 cases), follicular cysts (28 cases), odontogenic keratocysts (11 cases), primordial cysts (7 cases) and fissual cysts (6 cases). With the use of polyclonal antiserum against S-100 protein, positive LCs, dendrical or irregular in shape were found in tumour or cystic epithelia, and sometimes in stromal connective tissue. Incidence of positive S-100 staining LCs was 11 cases out of 61 ameloblastomas, 22 cases out of 40 radicular cysts, 3 cases of …

Intraosseous lesions of the jaw: a clinicohistological study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The jaw can be affected by many neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the fre … A total of 169 cases were studied. Of these, 78.7% were in the odontogenic cyst category, in which radicular cyst was the most common diagnosis, followed by dentigerous cyst. Ameloblastoma was the most common diagnosis in the odontogenic tumor category. All types of odontogenic cysts were most common in males. Most dentigerous cysts and odontogenic keratocysts …

Epidermoid Cyst of the Lumbar Spine After Lumbar Puncture: A Clinical, Radiographic, and Pathologic Correlation.

BACKGROUND: Epidermoid cysts can rarely arise as a late complication of lumbar puncture. We describe a young man who had a remote history of a lumbar puncture and who was subsequently found to have a lumbar spinal epidermoid cyst on imaging, after presenting with lower extremity radicular pain. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 24-year-old man with a remote history of lumbar puncture presented with lower back pain and radicular leg pain which had been ongoing for over a year. Despite conservative management, the patient's symptoms progressed to worsening back pain and left L4 radiculopathy. Magnetic resona

Proliferation kinetics-study of the growth of keratocysts. Morpho-functional explanation for recurrences.

The mode of growth of the odontogenic keratocyst is of decisive importance in the strategy and radicality of its surgical removal. The high … pithelium of the keratocyst examined clearly showed a higher rate of proliferation than that of the radicular cyst. The connective tissue was also growing very actively with a high rate of proliferation and this growth behaviour is at least partly responsible for the invasive and destructive growth of the keratocyst. In contrast to the radicular cyst, proliferat …

A cumulative analysis of odontogenic cysts from major dental institutions of Bangalore city: A study of 252 cases.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to perform a cumulative analysis of odontogenic cysts obtained from the data of major dental ins … cysts and 20.24% were nonodontogenic cysts. Among the odontogenic cysts most frequent lesions were radicular cysts (50.25%), followed by keratocysts (27.36%) and dentigerous cysts (22.39%). CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides a cumulative data of odontogenic cysts in the population of Bangalore city. The results of our study showed a similar frequency of odontogen …

Symptomatic cervical perineural (Tarlov) cyst: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Perineural (Tarlov) cysts are benign, usually asymptomatic, cerebrospinal fluid filled cysts of the spine, most often found in the sacral region. DESCRIPTION OF CASE: We report a Tarlov cyst, located in the cervical spine, in a 44-year-old woman who presented with a 3-week history of radicular symptoms of the right C6 root. The perineural cyst was identified at the C5-C6 level following magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine. A conservative approach was chosen, with the use of a soft cervical collar for two weeks, a 15-day-course of oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory m

Heat shock protein 27 expression in the epithelium of periapical lesions.

Heat shock protein (HSP) 27 is a member of the small HSP family that plays a part in the regulation of epithelial cell growth and differentiation, wound healing, apoptosis and cell protection against inflammatory cytotoxicity mediators. Thus the expression of HSP27 was investigated immunohistochemically in periapical granulomas with epithelial rests of Malassez and in radicular cysts. Anti-HSP27 mouse monoclonal antibody and peroxidase-labeled streptavidin-biotin standard technique were used to study the expression of HSP27. Proliferating epithelial cell rests, and islands of epithelium and ep…

An Unusual Case of a Large Periapical Cyst Mimicking a Nasopalatine Duct Cyst.

This article reports on the management of a large median symmetrical lesion of the anterior palate, which was clinically and radiographically diagnosed as an infected nasopalatine duct cyst. However, histopathology demonstrated it to be a radicular cyst of endodontic origin.
