Around 90 London Underground train drivers experience a person jumping or falling in front of their train each year. The majority of these incidents are suicides or attempted suicides. 76 drivers were interviewed in order to assess the range of responses to these incidents. We examined the change in Swiss suicide rates since 1969, breaking down the rates according to the method used. The descriptive analyses of the main suicide methods are presented. The suicide rates reached a peak in the late 1970s/early 1980s and declined in more recent years. Firearm suicides and suicides by falls were the exception and sustained their upwards trend until the 1990s. We examined 52 railroad workers with long-term occupational solvent exposures (average 22 years duration) who had been previously diagnosed by others as having solvent-induced toxic encephalopathy. All described episodes of transient intoxication associated with occupational solvent exposure. This paper reports the subsequent mortality of 94 persons who attempted suicide by jumping in front of London Underground trains between 1977 and 1979. The follow-up period was 10 yr. Despite the apparent seriousness of the method, completion of suicide was not found to be higher than in previous studies of attempted suicide by other methods. By the end of the follow-up period 18 persons had died, nine of natural causes. Coroners' inquests were held for the unnatural deaths. A case of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following a road traffic accident in which the onset of symptoms was delayed for 18 months until a widely reported major disaster occurred is described. A severe major depressive episode was precipitated, requiring treatment in its own right. During psychotherapy sessions, extreme emotions, heightened sensations, and 'organic memories' relating to the original accident were experienced.
