An examination of the effects of the diurnal cycle on phenylpropanolamine (PPA) anorexia was conducted using two groups of rats, differentiated on the basis of time (Night or Day) of drug injection (0, 10, 20, or 30 mg/kg PPA). The results demonstrate that PPA, over a range of doses, has greater anorectic potency during the dark phase of the diurnal cycle. Moreover, the effect of PPA on water intake was not influenced by the diurnal cycle, suggesting that the diurnal effect was limited to the inhibitory action of PPA on feeding. We studied the cardiotoxicity in magnesium (Mg)-deficient male rats fed 50 micrograms/g Cd for 45 consecutive days. Cd at a low concentration (0.28 ppm) in the heart induced cardiotoxic effects manifested by a decrease of the heart rate and weight and histopathological changes in the presence of Mg deficiency through Cd supplementation to a normal diet did not induce any cardiotoxic effect. Twenty-four hour urinary excretion of riboflavin was determined in normal and short-term and long-term streptozotocin diabetic rats. Compared to non-diabetic rats (controls), short-term (1 week) diabetic rats had no increased urinary riboflavin. In contrast, long-term (20 week) diabetic rats excreted significantly elevated levels of urinary riboflavin. Results suggest that the reported riboflavin deficiency seen in chronic diabetes may be related to augmented urinary excretion of riboflavin.

Previous studies have shown that central injection of bombesin produces hypothermia in food-deprived, but not food satiated rats at normal ambient temperatures. The present study evaluated the effects of bombesin on core body temperature (Tb) and feeding behavior in rats pretreated with insulin. In Malaysia, an aqueous extract of Tinospora crispa stems is taken orally to treat diabetes mellitus. In the present study, normal and alloxan-diabetic rats were used to evaluate the hypoglycaemic properties of the extract. A hypoglycaemic effect was observed in moderately diabetic rats with concomitant improvement in insulinaemia. Fosfosal (Disdolen) is a non acetyl derivative of salicylic acid with antiinflammatory and analgesic properties and a greater tolerance than acetylsalicylic acid and lysine acetylsalicylate. In the present work the pharmacokinetics of fosfosal have been studied after oral and intravenous administrations of 100 and 80 mg/kg in rats and dogs, respectively. This study examined the altered lipid metabolism and effects of drug treatments during the development of adjuvant arthritis in rats. The potential carcinogenic activity of 5,6-dimethoxysterigmatocystin (DMSC) was examined by oral administration in rats. In Experiment I, all of eight effective ACI/N rats given DMSC in the diet at a concentration of 50 p.p.m. developed neoplastic nodules of the liver. The analgesic response-serum concentration relationship (pharmacodynamics) of a representative nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, diflunisal, was examined after an acute dose in adjuvant arthritic and control rats. The analgesic response was 2-fold higher in the arthritic animals compared to controls. An attempt was made to assess discomfort in rats with hepatomegaly induced by feeding a high cholesterol, high cholate diet. After 8 weeks, the rats displayed a more than two-fold increase in liver weight when compared with controls fed a commercial diet. The metabolism and disposition of letosteine, labeled either with 14C or 35S, has been investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats. The ability of the octapeptide of cholecystokinin (CCK-8) to inhibit independent ingestion was examined in 8-h deprived 1- to 10-day-old rat pups consuming milk from the surface of a test chamber.
