The orbicularis oculi response can be evoked both by mechanical stimulation of the cornea (corneal reflex) and by electrical stimulation of the skin overlying the supraorbital nerve (blink reflex). Contralateral and ipsilateral acoustic reflex adaptation (decay) were examined using 500-, 1000-, and 2000-Hz tonal activators for stimulation periods of 30 seconds in 30 normal subjects. We examined the relationship between changes in heart rate and the measured QT interval of the electrocardiogram in healthy subjects after exercise and during breath holding, hyperventilation, the dive reflex, the Valsalva maneuver, and the cold-pressor test. The tachycardia of exercise was accompanied by the familiar shortening of the QT interval, but substantial heart rate changes encountered in other more "sedentary" maneuvers were accompanied by very small changes in QT. High-frequency sensitization of the acoustic reflex was studied in 10 normal-hearing subjects. The procedure involved pairing a subreflex 6000 Hz sensitizing tone with activating frequencies of 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz. Both threshold and growth of amplitude of the acoustic reflex were examined. Stapedial reflex data were obtained from 11 myasthenic, 18 hyperthyroid and six hypothyroid patients. Data were studied with respect to reflex threshold, amplitude and decay. Elevated threshold, decreased amplitude, and high and low frequency reflex decay were observed in myasthenic and hyperthyroid patients. Hypothyroidism merely increases stapedial reflex amplitude but causes no significant threshold or decay changes.

We have studied the effect of the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex on respiration in 10 vagotomized, spontaneously breathing, pentobarbital anesthetized dogs. The carotid body chemoreceptor reflex response was eliminated by surgically excluding the carotid bodies from the carotid sinus baroreceptor area. Anal stretch has been advocated as a method to overcome detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia. In evaluating candidates for this technique, it has been observed that in some cases the detrusor reflex and the external sphincter contraction is inhibited. The detrusor-sphincter unit then assumes a lower motor neuron pattern. This explains the need of the Valsalva and Credé maneuver that had been incorporated in the anal stretch technique to allow dyssynergic patients to void.

Acoustic reflex thresholds elicited using clinical acoustic impedance techniques were obtained on normal infants between one month and one year of age. Reflex activating signals of 500, 1000, 2000 Hz, low-pass, high-pass, and white noise were used. Less intensity was required to elicit the acoustic reflex to the noise than to the pure tones, with the 500-Hz tone requiring the greatest intensity. Inference of auditory thresholds from the acoustic reflex indicated the presence of normal hearing in the infant group.

The acoustic stapedial reflex, which normally occurs at a hearing level of about 80 dB, can be detected at lower levels by means of preactivation. Two techniques are presented, which allow the detection of reflex activity at intensities from 30 to 50 dB HL. It was the authors' intention to find a way to determine the hearing threshold from the stapedius reflex threshold even in patients, in whom the hearing threshold was not horizontal.

This study examined stapedial reflex recordings of pulsed pure tones (500, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 Hz) in 26 subjects with normal hearing and 18 with sensorineural impairment. The stapedial reflex tracings clearly differentiated the two groups of subjects. Like many of our special audiometric procedures, this test was least effective in those with mild hearing loss. The test also appeared to be useful in identifying high-frequency hearing losses. Although this reflex measurement appears to have potential as a clinical tool, additional field study appears necessary.

The probe tone of an impedance bridge has a direct effect on the results of tympanometry. The frequency of the probe tone should be close to the resonant frequency of the middle ear. Of three electroacoustic bridges using three different probe tones 800, 625 and 220 Hz, the one using 800 Hz provided the most identifiable tympanographic pattern in cases with ossicular discontinuity.
