A preliminary study was undertaken to evaluate the potential for a disposable respirator that has been contaminated with anthrax spores to release spores in handling after use. The release of inert particles from disposable respirators was measured for masks dropped 3 feet onto a hard surface. Ten experimental runs were conducted for each of two N95 mask types, the Moldex 2200N95 and the 3M 8210. Optimizing the service life of conventional canisters is not about simply increasing the depth of adsorbent present in the canister because this will lead to an increased resistance to airflow, and a greater physiological burden on the user. UNLABELLED: Persons at extreme altitudes are known to experience disturbances in the regulation of ventilation and sleep structure. However, except for simulated studies using the decompression chamber, only single events of sleep or ventilation were measured so far in field studies up to an altitude of 5800 m. The purpose of this study was to determine if there are any differences in the nasal geometry of children with nasal respiration or predominantly oral respiration (mouth breathing). Benzodiazepine have been shown to suppress ventilatory responses to hyperoxic hypercapnia (HCVR) and isocapnic HVR when taken parenterally. Most patients would, however, prefer to take an oral rather than parenteral preparation but the effect of oral benzodiazepine on these ventilatory responses has not been well studied. We therefore studied the effect of oral midazolam (7.5 mg) and diazepam (5 mg) both given orally on resting ventilation and respiratory drive, as assessed by HCVR and HVR. Flumazenil, a specific benzodiazepine antagonist, was administered intravenously to reverse the effect.

Respiratory thermography characterizes the role of nasal respiration in the thermo-adaptive function of airways. During nasal inspiration the air temperature in alveoli is 1.5--2.0 degrees C higher than during oral inspiration not only in patients with chronic pulmonary diseases but also in healthy people. In this context, correction of nasal respiration in people with chronic pulmonary diseases should be considered as an efficient factor for preventing exacerbation of the diseases.

Spontaneous electrical activity of human gastrocnemius and deltoid muscles was studied after physical overloading under the conditions of nasal or oral respiration. In nasal respiration, the electrical activity was enhansed as compared with oral respiration: stimulation of the nasal cavity receptors with air current seems to improve the respiratory center work and to produce optimal conditions for a wider irradiation of excitatory impulses from the respiratory center to the nerve-skeletal apparatus regulating the motor activity of the body.

Effect of papaverine, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine and SQ-20009 was studied. It was shown that papaverine (50 microM) had rotenone--like action on isolated rat liver mitochondria decreasing their membrane potential and blocking respiration upon beta-oxybutyrate oxidation. Papaverine did not practically influence the membrane potential and oxygen consumption upon succinate oxidation. SQ-20009 effect was much less than that of papaverine. 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (50-200 microM) was uneffective at all.

Dekkera intermedia and Brettanomyces custersii were shown to have a respiratory pathway resistant to cyanide, antimycin A, and azide. This respiration remained sensitive to salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM). The "cyanide-resistant" respiration was induced mainly at the end of the growth phase and could reach 50% of total respiratory capacity. The mitochondrial "petite colony" mutation had no effect on this oxidation pathway. This paper compares the two major respirable dusts size specifications with lung models derived from a recent review using computer simulation in logarithmic normal dust clouds. It was found that either specification gives reasonable reproductibility with respect to either the nose or mouth breathing lung models over the usual range of industrial dust clouds, and either could be chosen as a standard with only a slight adjustment in the corresponding dust control limit.

Twelve infantile autopsy cases up to 205 days using a long-term respirator care were examined in this study. These cases could be divided into three subgroups. A sleep apnea syndrome has been diagnosed in eight children (age range 5-14). Before undertaking therapeutic trials, sleep and respiration were extensively studied. Sleep and respiration were again analyzed 3 months after tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (6 cases) or tracheostomy with insertion of valve (2 cases).
