Early life stress (ELS) is highly prevalent among women with HIV (WWH) and contributes to risk for brain health disorders. Mitochondria represent key regulators of cellular stress processes and may represent a key mechanism linking ELS to biological vulnerability. While mitochondrial dysfunction has been associated with ELS in other populations, it remains unknown whether ELS is related to multidimensional mitochondrial health in WWH. Thus, we examined associations between ELS and mitochondrial health metrics in WWH. Sixty-one WWH completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and provided

Male fertility has declined over the years, partly due to metabolic disorders such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Antidiabetic drugs, including GLP-1 receptor agonists like liraglutide, are widely used to manage these conditions and aid in weight loss. Within the male reproductive tract, Leydig cells (LCs) are essential since they produce testosterone. Notably, the influence of antidiabetics on LCs remains a subject of limited investigation. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the effect of liraglutide on the physiology of LCs. To this end, we cultured LCs (BLTK1 cell line) without (control) or in t

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2B (eIF2B) is a master regulator of protein synthesis under normal and stress conditions. Mutations in any of the five genes encoding its subunits lead to vanishing white matter (VWM) disease, a recessive genetic deadly illness caused by progressive loss of white matter in the brain. In this study we used fibroblasts, which are not involved in the disease, to demonstrate the involvement of eIF2B in mitochondrial function and abundance. Mass spectrometry of total proteome of mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) isolated from Eif2b5R132H/R132H mice revealed

Mutations in the potassium channel gene Kv1.1 are associated with human episodic ataxia type 1 (EA-1) syndrome characterized by movement disorders and epilepsy. Ataxic episodes in EA-1 patients are often associated with exercise or emotional stress, which suggests a prominent role for the autonomic nervous system. Many of these alterations are reproduced in the Kv1.1-null mouse. Kv1.1 also regulates excitability of sensory neurons essential in cardiovascular and respiratory reflexes. We examined the neural control of the respiratory system of littermate wild-type (control) and Kv1.1-null mice

Patients in the Department of Neurology undergoing treatment for disorders such as cerebrovascular disease, dementia, metabolic disease, neuromuscular disease and intractable disease, are included as subjects requiring terminal care. Intractable diseases ware defined by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor) in 1972 as being of unknown etiology, untreatable, chronically progressive and sometimes worsened by the care provided when nursing these patients. Intractable diseases in the Department of Neurology rank with those seen in other departments. Amyotrophic

An accurate ambulatory breathing monitor is needed to observe acute respiratory changes in patients with medical or psychological disorders outside the clinic (e.g., hyperventilation during panic or apneas during sleep). Significant limitations of existing monitors are size, troublesome operation, and difficulty holding chest and abdomen bands in place during 24-hour recordings. Recently, a garment has been developed with embedded inductive plethysmography sensors for continuous ambulatory monitoring of respiration, heart activity, inductive cardiography, motility, postural changes, and other

PURPOSE: Orthostatic intolerance is a category of disorders characterized by inadequate hemodynamic compensation upon standing. In this study, we developed a portable, active abdominal compression binder intended for individuals with orthostatic intolerance. We present proof-of-concept evidence in healthy volunteers demonstrating the binder's ability to provide consistent abdominal compression, reduce tachycardic response upon standing, and maintain user comfort.
METHODS: We designed and fabricated a novel active binder that applies motor-driven abdominal compression upon the detection of sta

Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a significant role in the aging process and in neurodegenerative diseases including several hereditary spinocerebellar ataxias and other movement disorders marked by progressive degeneration of the cerebellum. The goal of this protocol is to assess mitochondrial dysfunction in Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) and assess the efficacy of pharmacological targeting of metabolic respiration via the water-soluble compound succinic acid to slow disease progression. This approach is applicable to other cerebellar diseases and can be adapted to a host of water-solubl

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) (obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea/Cheyne-Stokes respiration or the combination of both) is highly prevalent in patients with a wide variety of cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, arrhythmia, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction and stroke (reviewed previously in the September issue of this journal). Its close association with outcomes in chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HF-REF) suggests that it may be a potential treatment target. Herein, we provide an update on SDB and its treatment in HF-REF.

BACKGROUND: CO(2) respiration stimulates both anxiety and dyspnea ("air hunger") and has long been used to study panic vulnerability and respiratory control. High comorbidity with panic attacks suggests individuals with bipolar disorder may also mount a heightened anxiety response to CO(2). Moreover, problems in the arousal and modulation of appetites are central to the clinical syndromes of mania and depression; hence CO(2) may arouse an abnormal respiratory response to "air hunger".
METHODS: 72 individuals (34 bipolar I, 25 depressive and bipolar spectrum, 13 with no major affective diagnos

Breathing is the most important executive function of sleep. Compromise of the ventilatory mechanism is the principal consequence of a neuromuscular dysfunction in the individual who is asleep. This includes alterations of the lower motor neuron, the neuromuscular junction, and muscle. The primordial phenomenon in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep respiratory physiology is that the diaphragm assumes all functions of respiration. Any dysfunction of the diaphragm, whether neurogenic or neuromuscular, will interfere with breathing during REM sleep. So prevalent are sleep respiratory difficulties in

This review aims to summarize the basic research in the field of intermittent hypoxia in the Soviet Union and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) that scientists in other Western countries may not be familiar with, since Soviet scientists were essentially cut off from the global scientific community for about 60 years. In the 1930s the concept of repeated hypoxic training was developed and the following induction methods were utilized: repeated stays at high-mountain camps for several weeks, regular high altitude flights by plane, training in altitude chambers, and training by inhalat

OBJECTIVE: Several epidemiological studies have demonstrated a higher prevalence of panic disorder in women than in men. This study explored whether the prevalence of specific panic symptoms differs by gender.
METHOD: National Comorbidity Survey data from 609 respondents who met DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder or panic attacks were analyzed to test for gender differences across 18 panic symptoms.
RESULTS: Among National Comorbidity Survey respondents with panic disorder or panic attacks, female respondents were more likely than male respondents to experience respiration-related difficu

This article was written as an introduction to a special issue of Behavior Modification dedicated to studies in the field of respiratory psychophysiology. Although the invited articles that constitute this special issue cover a fairly broad range of topics, priority was given to articles that focus on the role of respiration in panic disorder. Attention is directed to the fundamental role of breathing in applied psychophysiology and to the encouragement of research in the modification of breathing behavior. The connection between respiratory psychophysiology and behavior modification is explai

Breathing retraining (BRtr) is believed to aid patients re-establish a normal diaphragmatic breathing pattern. Structured light plethysmography was used to assess the breathing pattern of 23 children and adolescents before and after attending a specialist BRtr clinic. It showed that a 3-month physiotherapist-led BRtr programme was associated with a significant reduction in the contribution of rib cage movement to the total change in thoracic volume and respiratory ra

Spinal cord injury (SCI) often leads to an impairment of the respiratory system. The more rostral the level of injury, the more likely the injury will affect ventilation. In fact, respiratory insufficiency is the number one cause of mortality and morbidity after SCI. This review highlights the progress that has been made in basic and clinical research, while noting the gaps in our knowledge. Basic research has focused on a hemisection injury model to examine methods aimed at improving respiratory function after SCI, but contusion injury models have also been used. Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation in patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The role of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is well documented in patients with restrictive thoracic diseases like kyphoscoliosis, tuberculosis sequelae or neuromuscular disease. There is also a good evidence for the use of NIPPV in acute respiratory failure in patients with an exacerbation of COPD. The application of NIPPV in patients with chronic respiratory failure is growing, but there is less evidence than in restrictive disorders. NIPPV can unload the respiratory mu

Down syndrome (DS) is caused by trisomy of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21). DS is a gene dosage disorder that results in multiple phenotypes including congenital heart defects. This clinically important cardiac pathology is the result of a third copy of one or more of the approximately 230 genes on Hsa21, but the identity of the causative dosage-sensitive genes and hence mechanisms underlying this cardiac pathology remain unclear. Here, we show that hearts from human fetuses with DS and embryonic hearts from the Dp1Tyb mouse model of DS show reduced expression of mitochondrial respiration genes an
