OBJECTIVES: Bendamustine is a standard treatment for low-grade B-cell lymphomas, and considered safe in clinical trials. Its safety in routine practice might be different.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the infection complications in an unselected cohort of patients treated with bendamustine over a nine-year period. Patients were regularly monitored for blood counts and cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation by antigen assay and polymerase chain reaction. They received granulocyte colony stimulating factor for neutropenia, and routine anti-pneumocystis and optional anti-fungal prophylaxis.

We generated retinoid-deficient adult rats by the removal of retinoids from their diet. We show that their motoneurons undergo neurodegeneration and that there is an accumulation of neurofilaments and an increase in astrocytosis, which is associated with motoneuron disease. The present study was designed to identify genomic loci modulating the susceptibility of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) to elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in the BXD recombinant inbred mouse strain set. We report a proband with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), in whom we have identified a novel homoplasmic m.3,395A>G mutation in the ND1 gene. The mutation alters a highly conserved amino acid in codon 30 which previously has been associated with LHON and leads to a severe selective complex I deficiency. The potential chronic toxicity and oncogenicity of dimethylacetamide (DMAC) was evaluated by exposing male and female rats and mice to 0, 25, 100, or 350 ppm DMAC for 6 hr/day, 5 days/week for 18 months (mice) or 2 years (rats). BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) occurs in 1 of every 500 African American births and 1 of every 36,000 Hispanic American births.
