A case of abdominal aortic aneurysm which presented as retroperitoneal fibrosis followed by fatal disseminated intravascular coagulation is reported. A diagnostic aortogram should be considered in all cases of apparent idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis.

A case of Ergotamine abuse causing considerable fibrotic changes of the abdominal aorta and iliac vessels and of the retroperitoneal space is reported. Histological and pathogenetic aspects of the arterial changes and the retroperitoneal fibrosis are discussed. They are referred to the permanent constriction of the Vasa vasorum by Ergotamine.

A case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis is reported with a description of the gray scale ultrasound findings. The mass was indistinguishable in appearance from many other retroperitoneal processes, such as lymphoma, fibrosarcoma, and liposarcoma. In this case the mass had a well-defined anterior border, and the posterior border with the vena cava and aorta was difficult to demonstrate. The sound transmission properties of the mass were similar to those of normal soft tissue structures. The value of the various radiologic techniques for the diagnosis and follow-up of retroperitoneal fibrosis are discussed on the basis of two case reports and an analysis of 48 patients. The most important technique is the IVP with breathing and profile exposures. AP and lateral pre-operative retrograde pyelography is often essential for the diagnosis. Cavography and arteriogram should always be done in this condition, since they permit assessment of vascular compression and extension distally of the fibrosis.
