Findings on embryonal development of renal fascia are given. By the end of the second and during the third months of embryogenesis renal fascia and fascio-mesenchymal clefts as a base for the future adipocyte spaces of retroperitoneum connected with it form around kidneys due to successive rearrangements of mesenchyme.

Only a few subdiaphragmatic bronchogenic cysts are described, and their occurrence in the retroperitoneum is extremely rare. So far, only a few cases have been reported in the English-language literature. A modified thoracoabdominal approach for radical retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy is described. In addition, this same incision is ideal for surgical access to the retroperitoneal structures. The primary advantage of this approach is full exposure of the retroperitoneum with minimal retraction by assistants and without entering the chest cavity.

Spiral CT allows the continuous scanning of different organ volumes. This series illustrates our experiences gained with spiral CT technique imaging of the upper abdomen and retroperitoneal space in about 150 patients. The diagnosis of sarcoidosis was made in a 40-year-old man when, in addition to enlarged mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes (sarcoidosis I), he also had peripheral lymph node enlargement. Pulmonary infiltrations (sarcoidosis II) developed subsequently. Three years after diagnosis pulmonary symptoms first became manifest, at the same time as pain in the kidney region. The urogram revealed hydronephrosis caused by enlarged retroperitoneal lymph nodes (CT scan). After treatment with corticosteroids the urogram was normal.

Retroperitoneal cysts are often a differential diagnostic problem. The diagnosis is not infrequently made only by laparotomy. Our experience with a 33 year old patient with pain localized in the left upper part of the abdomen and "cyst of the spleen" confirms this rule. The diagnosis of a lymphatic cyst of the retroperitoneum was made after the surgical enucleation.

Retroperitoneal sphincterotomy using lombotomy is an original surgical approach for treatment of retained stones of the common bile duct. Indication for this technique can be found in patients for whom a transperitoneal approach is contre-indicated and when endoscopic sphincterotomy is impossible.

The discussion points out the difference between primary and secondary hydatid cyst of the retroperitoneum, the diagnostic problems and a suggested treatment is given.

AIM: The surgical approach to the pararenal aorta can be performed through a midline laparotomy or retroperitoneal approach. The current paper reports the techniques for the suprarenal aortic approach, through the review of technical literature on this topic.

We report transdiaphragmatic pleural and retroperitoneal metastasis developing two and half years after resection of invasive thymoma (Masaoka stage III; WHO type B1, lymphocyte-rich) in a 34-year-old man. Post-surgery, he received radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Follow-up computed tomography (CT) one year post-surgery did not reveal any local recurrence or metastasis.
