Working Carers in Europe and How Their Caring Responsibilities Impact Work-Family Life Conflict: Analysis of the European Quality of Life Survey.

Background/Objectives: Ageing of the population is a pertinent characteristic in developed societies that raises questions of who provides care and how care is provided to frail and dependent old people. The majority of care is provided by family members, friends, and neighbours, many of whom are of working age and active in the labour market. The aim of this study is to research how work and care are intertwined and how they cause conflict for individuals in Europe. Methods: A hierarchical regression analysis of European Quality of Life Survey data was performed to evaluate the amount of expl

Acculturation, enculturation, and symptoms of depression in Hispanic youth: the roles of gender, Hispanic cultural values, and family functioning.

The risk for depression increases as Hispanic youth acculturate to U.S. society. This association is stronger for Hispanic girls than boys. To better understand the influence of culture and family on depressive symptoms, we tested a process-oriented model of acculturation, cultural values, and family functioning. The data came from Project RED, which included 1,922 Hispanic students (53 % girls; 86 % were 14 years old; and 84 % were U.S. born) from Southern California. We used data from 9th to 11th grade to test the influence of acculturation-related experiences on depressive symptoms over tim

Varieties of Castration Experience: Relevance to Contemporary Psychoanalysis and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

Although Freud considered castration to be one of the two major anxieties of human life, the castration complex has been relatively neglected in contemporary psychoanalytic writing and is insufficiently discussed in presentations of clinical cases. This article discusses the relevance of the concept to contemporary psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy, in particular the important contributing role of castration conflicts in the pathogenesis of a wide range of clinical symptoms. The author begins by briefly reviewing some classical and contemporary psychoanalytic ideas about castratio

Persistent trigeminal artery causing "double" neurovascular conflict.

We report the case of a 73-year-old woman who presented with right VI nerve palsy and homolateral atypical trigeminal neuralgia; standard neuroradiological investigation of orbital/retroorbital regions and intracranial arteries excluded the most commonly demonstrable underlying causes while brain magnetic resonance (T1-weighted fat suppression; T2-weighted thin-section) and magnetic resonance angiography disclosed the evidence of "double" neurovascular conflict because of persistent trigeminal artery with aneurysmal dilation. A role of this almost rare vascular condition in causing painful oph

The effects of a cochlear implant on the family of a hearing-impaired child.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a cochlear implant on the family of a hearing-impaired child. A single family was interviewed to answer these research questions: How does the family adapt initially to hearing impairment?, What are the family's concerns before, during, and after the implantation?, and How does the family accept and adjust to the outcomes of the procedure? METHODS: Immediate family members (mother, father, and child) of the child receiving a cochlear implant were interviewed individually three times: before, during, and after implantation using

Involvement of leukotriene C4 in PAF-induced death in mice.

The role of leukotrienes (LTs) in the pathogenesis of platelet-activating factor (PAF)-induced death in mice was reinvestigated, since previously reported results are in conflict. A novel 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor, E6080, and a leukotriene antagonist, LY17883, protected mice from PAF-induced death in a dose-dependent manner, while the well-known 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor, AA861, was less effective than E6080. After the intravenous injection of PAF in mice, immunoreactive leukotriene C4 (i-LTC4), which was co-eluted with authentic LTC4 in HPLC, was significantly increased in bronchoalveolar lavag

Triple Burden in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Climate Change, Armed Conflict, and the Silent Spread of Arboviruses. A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces a "triple burden" of public health threats which includes climate change, protracted armed conflict, and the under-recognized spread of arboviral diseases. Arboviruses, such as dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever, are transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Certain factors, like environmental changes, population displacement, and inadequate vector control, have created conditions that favor sustained transmission. METHODS: The narrative review was conducted to compile evidence on factors influencing arbovir

Striatal reactivity during emotion and reward relates to approach-avoidance conflict behaviour and is altered in adults with anxiety or depression.

BACKGROUND: We have previously reported activation in reward, salience and executive control regions during functional MRI (fMRI) using an approach-avoidance conflict (AAC) decision-making task with healthy adults. Further investigations into how anxiety and depressive disorders relate to differences in neural responses during AAC can inform their understanding and treatment. We tested the hypothesis that people with anxiety or depression have altered neural activation during AAC. METHODS: We compared 118 treatment-seeking adults with anxiety or depression and 58 healthy adults using linear m

Harming kin to save strangers: further evidence for abnormally utilitarian moral judgments after ventromedial prefrontal damage.

The ventromedial PFC (vmPFC) has been implicated as a critical neural substrate mediating the influence of emotion on moral reasoning. It has been shown that the vmPFC is especially important for making moral judgments about "high-conflict" moral dilemmas involving direct personal actions, that is, scenarios that pit compelling utilitarian considerations of aggregate welfare against the highly emotionally aversive act of directly causing harm to others [Koenigs, M., Young, L., Adolphs, R., Tranel, D., Cushman, F., Hauser, M., et al. Damage to the prefrontal cortex increases utilitarian moral j

Risk factors for domestic violence: findings from a South African cross-sectional study.

In 1998 a cross-sectional study of violence against women was undertaken in three provinces of South Africa. The objectives were to measure the prevalence of physical, sexual and emotional abuse of women, to identify risk factors and associated health problems and health service use. A multi-stage sampling design was used with clusters sampled with probability proportional to number of households and households were randomly selected from within clusters. One randomly selected woman aged 18-49 years was interviewed in each selected home. Interviews were held with a total 1306 women, the respon

Conflict of intentions due to callosal disconnection.

OBJECTIVES: Three patients with callosal syndrome manifested a peculiar symptom in that they were unable to perform intended whole body actions because another intention emerged in competition with the original one. Attempts were made to clarify the symptomatology of this manifestation and its possible mechanism is discussed. METHODS: The three patients are described and previous reports on patients with callosal damage were reviewed. Four additional patients with similar symptoms were found and the clinical features common to all seven patients were examined. RESULTS: This symptom could not

Impact of a Mobile Application for Tracking Nausea and Vomiting During Pregnancy (NVP) on NVP Symptoms, Quality of Life, and Decisional Conflict Regarding NVP Treatments: MinSafeStart Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women are active users of mobile apps for health purposes. These apps may improve self-management of health-related conditions. Up to 70% of pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting (NVP). Even mild NVP can significantly reduce quality of life (QoL), and it can become an economic burden for both the woman and society. NVP often occurs before the first maternal care visit; therefore, apps can potentially play an important role in empowering pregnant women to recognize, manage, and seek appropriate treatment for NVP, when required. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated wh

Identifying surge of exclusionary nationalism: A case study of prewar Japan.

A rise in exclusionary nationalism can escalate conflicts; however, there are limited quantitative analyses of the timing and magnitudes of such shifts. This study proposes a quantitative approach for tracking changes in exclusionary nationalism by focusing on language, specifically the acceptance/rejection of foreign loanwords. Using 300,110 Japanese newspaper articles spanning 1912-1943-the period surrounding the outbreak of the 1941 conflict with the United States and the United Kingdom-we employed the singular spectrum transformation method to detect change points in exclusionary nationali

Sanctions as a tactic used in partner conflicts: theoretical, operational, and preliminary findings.

Partner sanction in this study is a form/tactic of violence, much like verbal and physical violence, which partners use toward each other during their conflicts. The partner sanction embodies a temporary deprivation of a mutually agreed-on right. The purpose of this study is to develop a theoretical and operational framework of sanctions partners use. The study sampled 74 heterosexual couples from the general population (148 male and female participants). The findings support the validity and reliability of the sanction measurement. Furthermore, findings indicate that the use of sanctions betw

Wishes, conflicts, and support needs of informal caregivers of patients in the palliative phase: A qualitative study.

This study explored wishes, conflicts, beneficial, and wished support of informal caregivers (ICGs) providing care to a palliative ill close other. We interviewed five current and 15 bereaved ICGs (25-75 years), and used thematic analyses. ICGs wished to continue life as normal as possible, spend time together and with their family, comfort their close other, and continue own activities. Caregivers experienced conflicts in balancing caregiving and own activities, quality time with each other and social contacts, the level of professional or informal support preferred, and in their shifting rol

An active role of inferior frontal cortex in conscious experience.

In the search for the neural correlates of consciousness, it has remained controversial whether prefrontal cortex determines what is consciously experienced or, alternatively, serves only complementary functions, such as introspection or action. Here, we provide converging evidence from computational modeling and two functional magnetic resonance imaging experiments that indicated a key role of inferior frontal cortex in detecting perceptual conflicts caused by ambiguous sensory information. Crucially, the detection of perceptual conflicts by prefrontal cortex turned out to be critical in the

Euthanasia in Syria: an examination of medical student attitudes and predictors in a conflict zone.

BACKGROUND: Euthanasia remains a contentious issue globally, with attitudes significantly shaped by cultural, religious, and societal factors. In Syria, over a decade of conflict has devastated the healthcare system and created unique ethical challenges for future physicians. This study aimed to assess the attitudes of Syrian medical students toward euthanasia and identify the key predictors influencing their views in a conflict, resource-deprived setting. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,509 medical students from four major Syrian universities using an online survey. The

A quasi-experimental study about shared decision-making and motivational interviewing on patients with a recent fracture attending Fracture Liaison Services.

Shared decision-making (SDM) aims to improve patients' experiences with care, treatment adherence, and health outcomes. However, the effectiveness of SDM in patients with a recent fracture who require anti-osteoporosis medication (AOM) is unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a multicomponent adherence intervention (MCAI) including a patient decision aid (PDA) and motivational interviewing at Fracture Liaison Services (FLS) on multiple outcomes compared with usual care (UC). This pre-post superiority study included patients with a recent fracture attending FLS

Case Report: Good Prognosis of Mixed Alien Hand Syndrome by Verbal-Cue Rehabilitation Exercise.

Mixed alien hand syndrome is a rare disease reported in the literature. The mixed callosal-frontal variant of alien hand syndrome is associated with uncoordinated hand movements, and patients may present with an involuntary grasp reflex and intermanual conflict. There are few videos in the existing literature on the comparison of patients' condition before and after recovery of the symptoms of mixed alien hand syndrome. We presented the prognosis of mixed alien hand syndrome in the form of a video. In addition, we have included some videos on the comparison of the condition of patients before

No evidence for lymphatic filariasis transmission in big cities affected by conflict related rural-urban migration in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

BACKGROUND: In West Africa, the principal vectors of lymphatic filariasis (LF) are Anopheles species with Culex species playing only a minor role in transmission, if any. Being a predominantly rural disease, the question remains whether conflict-related migration of rural populations into urban areas would be sufficient for active transmission of the parasite. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We examined LF transmission in urban areas in post-conflict Sierra Leone and Liberia that experienced significant rural-urban migration. Mosquitoes from Freetown and Monrovia, were analyzed for infection
