Conducting Resisted Sled Sprint Load-Velocity Profiling in Female Rugby League Athletes-Reliability and Sled Load Using Velocity Decrement.

Martin, A, Duhig, S, Bourne, M, Minahan, C, and Bellinger, P. Conducting resisted sled sprint load-velocity profiling in female rugby league athletes-Reliability and sled load using velocity decrement. J Strength Cond Res 39(12): e1419-e1424, 2025-Resisted sled sprinting (RSS) is a training method used to improve short distance sprinting performance. Previous research has individualized sled loads using a 50% velocity decrement (V DEC ) to achieve an optimum load (L OPT percentage of body mass [BM]) targeting maximum power output (Pmax [W·kg -1 ]). However, RSS load-velocity (L-v) profiling to…

Contact-events and associated head acceleration events in semi-elite women's rugby union: A competition-wide instrumented mouthguard study.

This study aimed to quantify contact-events and associated head acceleration event (HAE) probabilities in semi-elite women's rugby union. Instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) were worn by players competing in the 2023 Farah Palmer Cup season (13 teams, 217 players) during 441 player-matches. Maximum peak linear acceleration (PLA) and peak angular acceleration (PAA) per-event were used as estimates of in vivo HAE (HAEmax), linked to video analysis-derived contact-events and analysed using mixed-effects regression. Back-rows had the highest number of contact-events per full-match (44.1 [41.2 to 47.1]…

Contact Role and Tackle Characteristics Shape Head Acceleration Exposure in Male Community Rugby: A Cohort Study Utilising Instrumented Mouthguards.

BACKGROUND: Rugby Union has attracted increased scrutiny because of concerns over head acceleration events (HAEs), particularly regarding their frequency, severity and potential long-term health implications. While substantial efforts by governing bodies have focused on reducing head impact risks through education, regulatory changes and the introduction of instrumented mouthguards, limited data exist for the community rugby context, especially across different age grades and playing positions. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantify HAE across playing positions, age grades and contact phases in comm…

Comparing Bristow and Latarjet procedures for anterior shoulder instability in competitive rugby players: a unique within-subject clinical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anterior shoulder instability is a significant concern in collision sports like rugby, often requiring surgical intervention. The Bristow and Latarjet procedures are commonly performed coracoid transfer techniques alongside Bankart repair; however, direct comparisons of their clinical outcomes within the same individuals remain unexplored. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of the Bristow and Latarjet procedures in competitive rugby players who underwent both surgeries on contralateral shoulders. We hypothesized that the Bristow procedure would yield superior patient…

Comparison of the Abdominal Wall Muscle Thickness in Female Rugby Players Versus Non-Athletic Women: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Rugby players engage in demanding, high loading muscular activity in the spine. Study of the abdominal wall architecture in female rugby athletes is relevant to the possible muscular asymmetry secondary to sport practice and the relationship between the abdominal wall and the pelvic floor muscles. Activation of the transversus abdominis (TrAb) generates an increase in the bladder neck muscle. Moreover, an increased interrecti distance (IRD) is related to urinary incontinence and has a higher prevalence in athletic women. The aim of the present study was to compare an…

An exploratory study on preseason event related potentials in female adolescent rugby athletes: do symptoms and concussion history matter?

Female rugby is a collision sport involving contact events such as tackling, rucking, and scrumming, elevating the risk of sport-related concussion (SRC) and repetitive head acceleration events (rHAEs) in female adolescent athletes. Event-related potentials (ERPs) are neurophysiological markers, which can reflect SRC and rHAEs, however, preseason benchmark ERP characteristics in female adolescent rugby players remain poorly understood, particularly regarding age, concussion history, and Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) outcomes. The primary aim was to examine associations between SCAT s…

Sanctioned illegal high tackles significantly increase concussion risk to both tacklers and ball carriers in elite men's Rugby Union.

OBJECTIVES: Tackles making contact above the sternum increase concussion and head injury assessment (HIA) risk in Rugby Union. The sport has introduced harsher sanctions to change tackler behaviours to reduce this risk. This increased high tackle sanction numbers, though it is unknown whether sanction severity is associated with injury risk. METHODS: The sanction decision made by match officials for tackles resulting in 157 HIA1 removals, of which 91 were confirmed concussions, was evaluated. The propensity of sanction types, ranging from no foul play to red card, was compared after calculati…
