Rumination and impaired resource allocation in depression.

Depression is characterized by a range of cognitive deficits that theorists posit are due to the resource capturing properties of rumination. The present study was designed to examine the relation between rumination and resource allocation in depression. Twenty-five depressed and 25 nondepressed participants completed a modified dual-task version of the recency-probes task, which assesses the controlled allocation of cognitive resources by comparing performance across low- and high-interference conditions. In low-interference conditions, participants performed either the recency-probes task or

Dispositional Rumination in Individuals with a Depression History.

Many studies show that rumination is related to current depressive episodes but very few studies have examined whether rumination is elevated among those with a history of diagnosed depression. The goal of the current study was to examine whether a history of diagnosable major depressive disorder (MDD) is related to rumination among undergraduates. In addition, individual difference variables (i.e. problem-solving abilities, neuroticism and self-esteem) that might help explain rumination were examined. Participants were interviewed with the SCID to diagnose MDD. Fifty-one had no history of MDD

Rumination syndrome: an emerging case scenario.

This article describes the case of a 19-year-old woman presenting with repetitive episodes of effortless vomiting, which started within 3 weeks of her naval boot camp training. She underwent a battery of costly investigations before the diagnosis of rumination syndrome could be made. One of the reasons for her delayed diagnosis is that many physicians are unaware of, or are reluctant to make the diagnosis of rumination syndrome. The purpose of this article is to make the general physician aware of the possibility of rumination syndrome in adolescents and adults of normal intelligence, even tho

Social anxiety and ruminative self-focus.

Studies of rumination have supported the differentiation of self-focus into distinct modes of self-attention with distinct functional effects. Given that self-focused attention and rumination have been implicated in the maintenance of social anxiety, the present study investigated the effects of these two distinct forms of self-focused attention on mood and cognition in social anxiety. High and low socially anxious individuals (n=29 in each group) either thought analytically about, or focused on their momentary experience of, identical symptom-focused induction items from [Nolen-Hoeksema, S.,

[Rumination syndrome in an adult with normal intelligence].

A 32-year-old woman visited our department because of repeated regurgitation of food, and was diagnosed with rumination syndrome based on possession of symptoms typical for it. Although rumination syndrome is classified as a functional esophageal disorder according to the Rome II criteria, it is not well known in Japan, and there have been no previous reports of it in an adult with normal intelligence. Since patients with rumination syndrome are often misdiagnosed and receive unnecessary treatment, awareness of it by physicians is important.

Symptom-focused rumination and sleep disturbance.

Rumination can prolong negative mood, disrupt sleep, and increase depression risk. Although there is evidence that poor sleepers ruminate, no studies have identified the ruminative content relevant for sleep disturbance. This study investigated (a) the association between rumination and sleep and (b) the ruminative content of poor sleepers. Results revealed that self-defined poor sleepers (n = 104) were more prone than self-defined good sleepers (n = 139) to ruminate and that the ruminative content was symptom focused (e.g., poor sleepers ruminated on causes of dysphoria, concentration, and fa

Clinical examination of the ruminant nervous system.

Practical and rapid physical examination techniques that allow the clinician to neuroanatomically localize the site of disease to the cerebrum, cerebellum, brainstem/cranial nerves, or spinal cord/peripheral nerves are described. The physical examination methods discussed in this article can be performed easily and quickly and do not require any specialized or expensive equipment to perform.

Effective treatment of rumination with Nissen fundoplication.

Rumination is a syndrome characterized by the effortless regurgitation of recently ingested food. It has been linked to severe medical and psychosocial conditions including malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, and complete social withdrawal. Psychotherapy, the current treatment modality for rumination, may improve symptoms but requires significant motivation and is rarely curative. We hypothesized that a complete fundoplication would eliminate, or at least impair, the ability to regurgitate gastric contents through the esophagogastric junction. We performed a Nissen fundoplication in five patie

Rumination and social problem-solving in depression.

We tested the hypothesis that impaired social problem solving in depression is a consequence of state-oriented rumination, which can be ameliorated by improving awareness of mental processes. 32 currently depressed, 26 recovered depressed, and 26 never depressed participants completed the Means Ends Problem Solving Test while randomly allocated to no questions, state-oriented ruminative questions, (e.g. focusing on why you have a problem) or process-focused questions (e.g. focusing on how you decide to solve a problem). In the no question condition, the currently depressed group was significan

Co-rumination in the friendships of girls and boys.

This research addresses a new construct, co-rumination. Co-rumination refers to extensively discussing and revisiting problems, speculating about problems, and focusing on negative feelings. Friendship research indicates that self-disclosure leads to close relationships; however, coping research indicates that dwelling on negative topics leads to emotional difficulties. Co-rumination is a single construct that integrates both perspectives and is proposed to be related both to positive friendship adjustment and problematic emotional adjustment. Third-, fifth-, seventh-, and ninth-grade particip

The relationship between rumination and eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Rumination has been described as a symptom in association with eating disorders, but also as a separate disorder. METHOD: A series of 8 female volunteers who reported rumination were systematically screened for the presence of eating disorders and other psychopathology. RESULTS: Seven met current or prior criteria for an Axis I disorder and five had a current or prior eating disorder. DISCUSSION: The importance of screening for eating disorders among women who ruminate, and for screening for rumination among eating disorder patients, is stressed.

Self-perpetuating properties of dysphoric rumination.

Hypotheses about the self-perpetuating properties of ruminative responses to depressed mood were tested in 2 laboratory studies and 2 questionnaire studies with dysphoric and nondysphoric Ss. Studies 1 and 2 supported the hypothesis that dysphorics induced to engage in self-focused rumination would report reduced willingness to engage in pleasant, distracting activities that could lift their moods, even if they believed they would enjoy such activities. Studies 3 and 4 confirmed the hypothesis that dysphorics induced to ruminate in response to their moods would feel they were gaining insight i

Perspectives in mucosal immunity: a ruminant model.

All mammalian species have developed specialized defence mechanisms at the interface between mucosal surfaces and the environment and this system operates independently of the systemic immune system. Attachment of organisms to the mucosal epithelium is a primary prerequisite for infection and is an important virulence determinant for pathogens of these sites. The mucosal immune defences are thus characterized by production of IgA antibodies, the principal mode of action of which is to inhibit the adherence of pathogens to the mucosal epithelium. This introduction to the symposium on mucosal im

Rumination and vomiting in Prader-Willi syndrome.

Inability to vomit has been cited as characteristic of Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Although post-prandial vomiting after gastric by-pass surgery has been reported, neither vomiting under "typical" circumstances or rumination have been described. Prompted by the discovery of several cases of vomiting and rumination, a questionnaire was sent to members of the PWS Association. Approximately 36% (113/313) of affected individuals reportedly experienced at least one episode of vomiting. Induced vomiting was unsuccessful in 9 of 14 cases in whom results were known. However, no complications of Ipeca

Ruminative thinking. A distinctive sign of melancholia.

We propose that ruminative thinking, the tendency to dwell on the same thought or theme, is useful for distinguishing melancholic from nonmelancholic major depression. We demonstrate that the symptom can be rated reliably and that interview ratings are concordant with ward observation of the symptom. The frequency of ruminative thinking, rated retrospectively in a prior study, was 60% in 75 patients having autonomous depression while only 18% of 48 nonautonomous patients were so affected. In this study, we found that ruminative thinking, prospectively rated in 71 patients with unipolar major d
