We hereby report a case of metastatic Ewing's sarcoma presenting with rapid-onset total ophthalmoplegia, optic atrophy, and right temporal hemianopia. Comprehensive ophthalmic and neurological evaluation with targeted radioimaging revealed a tumor mass centered over the sella, compressing optic chiasma, extending to involve the left cavernous sinus and the left orbital apex. Whole-body imaging revealed the evidence of multifocal lung and mediastinal metastasis with focal lytic defect in the left femoral head. Histopathological evaluation of transnasal punch biopsy from the nasopharyngeal exten

Ewing's Sarcoma is the second most common primary malignant bone tumor in children and young adults after osteosarcoma but exceptionally it can arise from extra skeletal sites also. Extra skeletal Ewing's sarcoma is of neuroectodermal origin and usually involves extremities, retroperitoneum and paravertebral regions. No case of extra skeletal Ewing's sarcoma involving perineum is yet reported. A 16 years old male patient admitted to colorectal surgery department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh in July 2015 having swellings in perineum as well as both i

Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a primary malignant bone tumor. Its occurrence in adults is uncommon. Even rarer is the occurrence in the spine. The prognosis of this tumor in adult patients is unfavorable. In this report, we present the case of a 56-year-old woman with ES localized at the upper thoracic spine, presented with acute incomplete paraplegia. The patient underwent emergency decompressive hemilaminectomy and tumor debulking surgery to decompress the spinal cord. As adjuvant therapy, she received radio-chemotherapy followed by en bloc resection via a combined dorsoventral approach. In the cour

Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma is a rare tumor, and the management of airway compromise in case of cervical Ewing's sarcoma has not been established. This report describes the case of a patient with retrotracheal Ewing's sarcoma and discusses a successful approach to airway management. A 12-year-old male presented with a 2-week history of sore throat and sleep-disordered breathing and 48 hours of stridor. Imaging confirmed a retrotracheal soft tissue mass with airway compromise. A planned and controlled approach to his airway management resulted in a secure airway prior to definitive treatment.

Ewing's sarcoma is a primary malignancy of the bone affecting individuals in the second decade of life. Primary sarcomas of the spine are rare and the occurrence of Primary Ewing's sarcoma in the spine is very rare. Ewing's sarcoma occurring in the spine is divided into two types, Ewing's sarcoma of sacral spine which are very aggressive with poor prognosis and Ewing's sarcoma of the non sacral spine which is an extremely rare occurrence. Patient may present with neurological deficit when the tumour extends into the spinal canal causing spinal cord compression. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

We report a case of Ewing's sarcoma of the sacroiliac joint in a 21-year-old male mimicking tubercular sacroiliitis, a rare entity not reported in literature. He presented with pain in the lower back radiating to the right lower limb along with constitutional symptoms of 3 months duration. On examination, the right sacroiliac joint was tender. The laboratory investigations showed anaemia, leukocytosis and raised erythrocyte sedimentation rate. On X-ray, features of right sacroiliitis were seen. This was further investigated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which showed features consisten

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma in the head and neck.
METHOD: The clinical data of four cases of extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma was analysed and relevant literatures were reviewed.
RESULT: Two cases originated from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, the other two cases originated from the oral pharynx and skin respectively. The tumors were all diagnosed via histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Two cases were treated by combined modality therapy and did not recur or metastasize after follow-up for 7 mo

Two cases of primary extraosseous intradural spinal Ewing's sarcoma are reported with a review of the current literature. This rare neoplasm shares features with cerebral primitive neuroectodermal tumors, complicating a correct diagnosis. Gross total resection seems to be the main treatment, although adjuvant therapies could improve the prognosis. In case 1, a 56-year-old man presented with cauda equina syndrome. MRI showed an intradural tumor from L4 to S2. An emergency laminectomy was performed with gross total resection of a hemorrhagic tumor, followed by adjuvant treatment. In the second c

Second malignancies, mostly in the form of bone sarcomas, are known to occur in hereditary retinoblastomas, which usually present with bilateral disease. Only 2 cases of Ewing's sarcoma have been reported in the literature following sporadic unilateral retinoblastoma. A 5-year-old boy presented to our hospital with Ewing's sarcoma of the right humerus (proven by biopsy and immunohistochemistry) following successful treatment of retinoblastoma of the left eye with enucleation and chemotherapy 2 years previously. He was treated with 2 cycles of chemotherapy followed by radiation therapy. At 15 m

The clinical case of a 34-year-old patient is presented who was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in the right pedicle of the L5 vertebral body on the basis of persisting dorsolumbar pain. Staging examinations including CT scan of the thorax and abdomen as well as bone scintigraphy were inconspicuous. The patient underwent 6 cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (VIDE, similar to Euro Ewing 99). Presurgically, embolisation of the L4 and L5 vertebral bodies was performed on both sides. The tumour was removed via a dorsal approach with corporectomy of L5 and resection of the right nerve root of L5. The

We have reported a case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor/Ewing's sarcoma (PNET/EWS) in a 32-year-old female who had had no symptoms until the tumor was detected in a general examination after she gave birth. Chest X-ray showed a well-defined, rounded mass in the left lower lung field. Computed tomographic scan of the chest revealed a distinct mass adjacent to the anterolateral thoracic wall. The macroscopic findings had shown a well-capsulated tumor with a stalk emanating from the thoracic wall. PNET/EWS was histologically diagnosed. The tumor was composed of atypical, small round cells. It

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is a small round cell tumor, usually arising from flat bones and diaphyseal region of long bones. It is commonly found in the first two decades of life. It is curable when diagnosed in the localized stage and requires multimodality treatment. ES is a chemosensitive tumor. It metastasizes commonly to lung, pleura and other bones. Less common sites of metastasis are lymph nodes, CNS and liver. Skin metastasis is extremely uncommon. It occurs in up to 9% of all patients with cancer. Growth pattern of cutaneous metastasis is unpredictable and may not reflect that of primary tu

CD99 is a 32kDa surface glycoprotein that is involved in the migration of leukocytes, cell-cell adhesion and apoptosis of T cells and Ewing's sarcoma (ES) cells, two cell types with a high level of CD99 expression. Engagement of the molecule induces a rapid death signal that appears to be related to the level of expression of this antigen. The rapid apoptosis induced by agonistic anti-CD99 monoclonal antibodies is of clinical interest in ES, a tumour for which no new drugs have been described as clearly effective in the last 10 years. In this study, we show that an anti-CD99 monoclonal antibod

This paper investigates the potential for long-term survivorship for young patients diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma. Data are examined from two successive UKCCSG Ewing's Tumour studies (ET-1 and ET-2). Patients have been followed for up to 20 years. These studies had suggested that better 5-year survival with ET-2 over the earlier ET-1 was achieved by replacing cyclophosphamide by ifosfamide and increasing the dose of doxorubicin in a four-drug chemotherapy regimen. The updated hazard ratio, stratified for metastatic status at diagnosis, of 0.39 (95% confidence interval 0.12-0.61) confirmed the

An 11-year-old girl was admitted with back pain for 2 months, inability to walk for 15 days, and enuresis and encopresis for 2 days. She had been hospitalized with the diagnosis of brucellosis in another hospital. At presentation, she had paraplegia, sphincter dysfunction, and bilateral sensory loss below the T6 level, and was initially diagnosed with transverse myelitis caused by brucellosis. On the third day of hospitalization, however, agglutination test for brucella was negative, but it was positive for Salmonella. Therefore, transverse myelitis was considered to be due to salmonellosis. T

We present the case of a 12-year-old girl who presented with a pathological fracture through a benign-appearing osteolytic lesion that was presumed to represent fibrous dysplasia. The fracture healed, and over the next 2.5 years there was further refracturing and healing with progressive osteolysis. A biopsy was performed and revealed Ewing's sarcoma. The disease was locally controlled by neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The patient is disease free with excellent function 6 years following the discovery of the lesion. We illustrate and discuss the sequence of events.

Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma (EES) is an uncommon condition that may develop in soft tissues at any location. Neurological symptoms leading to diagnosis have been reported exceptionally. We report two cases of EES in patients aged 16 and 74 years, presenting with cauda equina syndrome and radicular ulnar involvement respectively. Radiological images showed a paraspinal mass in both cases and biopsy disclosed the histological features of Ewing's sarcoma. EES should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of paraspinal soft tissues tumours at any age.
