Trichoblastic carcinoma (TC) is a rare type of malignancy which is derived from the hair follicles. In this paper, we report a case with TC on the scalp characterized with rippled pattern. There have been reports of rippled pattern in trichoblastomas, sebaceomas, and basal cell carcinomas. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in the literature to report a rippled pattern in TCs.

Pilar tumors, commonly called trichilemmal cysts, are usually benign in nature, malignant transformation (so called proliferating pilar tumors or proliferating trichilemmal cysts [PTCs]) with high recurrence rates, local invasion and metastases have been described. A 64-year-old women presented to our hospital with a recurrent ulcerated mass lesion of the scalp. Non-contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan of the head was performed. The mass was managed by complete excisional biopsy and the defect closure was achieved by using a full-thickness skin graft. Histopathological analysis revealed …

A healthy 66 year-old man presented with a complaint of changes within a nodule on the scalp, which had first appeared over 10 years prior. He had no previous history of skin cancer. On physical examination a solitary, asymmetric, purple-black nodule with irregular borders was identified on the right vertex of his scalp. The remainder of his examination did not reveal any additional lesions.

BACKGROUND: The scalp represents a special region for the manifestation of pathogen-induced diseases.
OBJECTIVE: This article describes practice-relevant pathogen-induced skin diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Currently available publications were evaluated with special reference to therapeutic developments.
RESULTS: Bacterial infections of the scalp must be treated consistently in the initial stages in order to avoid severe consequences. Skin diseases caused by fungi must be treated topically (e.g. neonatal cephalic pustulosis) or systemically…

Scalp and cranial deformities are common after trauma or ablative surgery. Local flaps and free flaps may be used in reconstruction of soft tissue defects, and autogenous bone or alloplastic bone substitutes may be used for cranioplasty procedures. Injuries to the frontal sinus, particularly when complicated by leak of cerebrospinal fluid or obstruction of the nasofrontal outflow tract, represent special challenges. Further studies are recommended to improve the multidisciplinary management of these complex, debilitating conditions, in anticipation of enhanced function and cosmesis, reduced do…

Cutaneous angiosarcoma (CA) has a wide range of clinical presentations. In this case report, we discuss a 78-year-old gentleman, who presented with a keratoacanthoma-like scalp lesion that turned out histologically to be a cutaneous angiosarcoma. A brief overview of CA, including its etiology, prognostic factors, clinical manifestations, and treatment options will also be discussed.

We present a case of giant melanoma of the scalp observed in our department. It is a rare but very aggressive pathology which is generally treated by radical surgery. We emphasize early diagnosis because a large extension of the tumor can lead to the need of a very extensive surgical resection. Prognosis is very severe despite adjuvant medical treatments.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis associated with hypersensitivity to ultraviolet light due to defects in Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair. These patients have more than a 1000-fold increased risk of developing skin cancers. Although multiple cutaneous malignancies are common, the simultaneous occurrence of angiosarcoma and basal cell carcinoma is a rare phenomenon. We report a case of a 25-year-old male with XP with angiosarcoma scalp and basal cell carcinoma of face and occiput and discuss the treatment of this aggressive neoplasm with a review of the …

Temporal arteritis or giant cell arteritis is a systemic granulomatous vasculitis of medium and large-sized arteries, most frequently involving the temporal artery. It presents with headache, fever, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and anemia. If untreated, complications like ischemic optic neuritis may even lead to blindness. Although very rare, scalp necrosis and ulcerations are the most common dermatologic findings. An 85-year-old woman presented with a two-month history of bilateral scalp ulcerations, followed by permanent loss of vision in the left eye due to the delay in diagnosin…

We present the case of a 91-year old female, with no family history of malignancy, diagnosed with primary superficial leiomyosarcoma G1 of the scalp with frontal bone lysis and intracranial extension. The particularity of this case is the rarity of this tumor and the uncommon location. Also the bone involvement, present in our case, has been seen only in a reduced number of patients, approximately 10% of the cases.

Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma is a benign tumor with a predilection for distal parts of the extremities; it is very rare in the head and neck region. It commonly affects young patients-hence the term juvenile in the name. It is fibroblastic in origin and considered a cartilage analogue of fibromatosis, but its exact etiology remains unknown. Clinically, this tumor needs to be differentiated from fibromatosis, nodular fasciitis, chondroma, schwannoma, and rheumatoid nodule. A 24-year-old woman presented with swelling in the forehead for the previous 6 months. Wide surgical excision of the lesi

BACKGROUND: Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRT) are rare but aggressive tumors presenting in the pediatric population. First thought a variant of Wilms' tumor in the kidney, it is recognized as presenting at renal, central nervous system and other extra-renal primary sites. It is uniformly of very poor prognosis, however.
CASE REPORT AND DISCUSSION: We present a case of congenital MRT of the scalp, which we believe to be the first described at this site. The clinical and histopathological features of the tumor are discussed in light of the current literature on MRT at other sites. The bleak progn…
