A 3-year-old boy, who was previously well, developed acute pulmonary oedema, fundal haemorrhages, temporary blindness and deafness following a Nebo hierochonticus scorpion sting. Cranial CT scan 8 days after admission showed bilaterally symmetrical multiple hyperdense areas with intense enhancement in the cerebellar and cerebral hemispheres consistent with multiple haemorrhages. He made a complete clinical recovery with resorption of the retinal haemorrhages 4 weeks after the scorpion sting. Cranial CT scan 8 months later revealed the intracranial lesions to be hypodense with no contrast enhan

Cardiac dysfunction with pulmonary edema following scorpion envenomation (SE) has been documented only in a few isolated case reports. We conducted a systematic hemodynamic study in five consecutive patients (mean age, 21.6 +/- 8 years) presenting with pulmonary edema occurring a few hours (9.6 +/- 5.2 hours) after SE. All patients had increased pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (mean, 25 +/- 1.8 mm Hg) while the systemic vascular resistance was elevated only in one. The stroke volume index was markedly depressed (21.7 +/- 3.6 ml/sq m) whereas cardiac index was normal or slightly decreased (2

Scorpion (Buthus tamulus) venom was subjected to neutralization by treating the venom with various chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, thiourea, formaldehyde, zinc sulphate, acetic acid and trichloroacetic acid. The venom was also subjected to heat treatment. The levels of total protein, free amino acids and protease activity in neutralized venom decreased significantly. The decrease in venom protein and free amino acids was in proportion to the duration of the heat treatment and the concentration of chemicals used except zinc sulphate, sodium hydroxide and thiourea. Proteas

The pathogenesis of skeletal muscle necrosis produced by Tityus Serrulatus venom was studied by means of light microscopy and electron microscopy. Wistar rats were inoculated subcutaneously, at some distance from the muscles under study, with a sublethal dose of scorpion venom. Samples were taken of the tibialis anterior muscles of both rear legs, 2, 7 and 24 hours postinoculation. Light microscopy analysis after 2 hours revealed certain changes identified as "delta lesions", and also the presence of hyperconcentrated muscle cells. Electron microscopy confirmed these lesions and also enabled u

Scorpion envenoming is known to produce serious complications in children, and the complications differ with different species seen in the world. Peripheral failure, hypotension, myocarditis and seizures are the serious complications related to scorpion envenoming. The pathogenesis of cardiovascular complications caused by the Buthotus (Buthus) tamulus species is likely to be related to the direct effect of the venom on the myocardium rather than to catecholamine-induced hypoxia, as reported earlier. A scorpion sting is a common event both in urban and rural areas and the complications are mor

Scorpion venom, which depolarizes nerves, was used to obtain further evidence that intramural nerves affect ion transport by the rabbit ileum. Ileal epithelium, stripped of muscularis propria, was mounted in a flux chamber modified to permit electrical field stimulation (EFS) of the tissue. Response of the short-circuit current (Isc) to venom was most rapid on the serosal surface, and the response was eliminated by tetrodotoxin. Isc response was influenced by venom batch number and by factors within the tissue. Venom (10 micrograms/ml) and EFS each caused chloride secretion by reducing mucosal

Electrophysiological analysis of the effects of scorpion toxin I, one of the neurotoxins from the venom of the scorpion Androctonus australis Hector, upon crayfish neuromuscular junctions has shown that the toxin strongly associates with the nerve terminal to stimulate release of neurotransmitters. The biochemical approach has shown that the binding of scorpion toxin I to rat brain synaptosomes is accompanied by a decrease in their capacity to accumulate gamma-aminobutyric acid. The main effect of the toxin is to stimulate neurotransmitter release. The apparent dissociation constant of the tox

The venom apparatus of the scorpion, C. sculpturatus (Ewing) was studied with light and electron microscopy. Each of the paired glands is lined by secretory epithelium made up of a single layer of columnar cells. Extensive folding in the epithelial layer creates a primitive acinar gland. The secretory products are either membrane-bound or unbound vesicles with discrete morphologies and are observed in the extruded venom, within the lumen of the gland, and within single secretory cells. The venom apparatus, including connective tissues, nerve cells, and muscle tunic is described and correlation
