Hospital Incidence and In-Hospital Mortality of Surgically and Interventionally Treated Aortic Dissections: Secondary Data Analysis of the Nationwide German Diagnosis-Related Group Statistics From 2006 to 2014.

Background Population-based data about the incidence and mortality of patients with aortic dissections ( ADs ) are sparse. Therefore, the hospital incidence and in-hospital mortality of patients undergoing open or endovascular surgery for type A ADs ( TAADs ) and type B ADs ( TBADs ) in Germany were analyzed on a nationwide basis between 2006 and 2014. Methods and Results A secondary data analysis of the nationwide diagnosis-related group statistics, compiled by the German Federal Statistical Office, was performed for patients who were surgically/interventionally treated for AD ( International…

Impact of baseline vitamin B12 status on the effect of vitamin B12 supplementation on neurologic function in older people: secondary analysis of data from the OPEN randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The available evidence from randomised controlled trials suggests that vitamin B12 supplementation does not improve neurologic function in older people with marginal but not deficient Vitamin B12 status. This secondary analysis used data from the Older People and Enhanced Neurological function (OPEN) randomised controlled trial to assess whether baseline vitamin B12 status or change in vitamin B12 status over 12 months altered the effectiveness of dietary vitamin B12 supplementation on neurologic function in asymptomatic older people with depleted vitamin B12 status at s

How large is the organ donor potential in Germany? Results of an analysis of data collected on deceased with primary and secondary brain damage in intensive care unit from 2002 to 2005.

The number of potential organ donors depends on various factors, among which the number of deceased with primary or secondary brain damage is the most decisive. In the north-east donor region of Germany with 7.69 million inhabitants, 2019 cases of deceased with primary or secondary brain damage were reported by 136 intensive care units during 2002-2005. In a study, 64% of these deceased were identified as potential donors. This represents 40.7 potential donors per million inhabitants. It can be concluded that in the other donor regions of Germany a comparable number of potential donors exists,

Levels of adherence, barriers and facilitators to antenatal supplementation of iron-containing supplements in sixty-nine low- and middle-income countries: a secondary analysis of demographic and health surveys data.

Fe-deficiency anaemia is common during pregnancy and can lead to serious health consequences for mothers and babies. Antenatal Fe supplementation is associated with lower anaemia prevalence and improved pregnancy outcomes, and the WHO recommends daily oral Fe (30-60 mg) with folic acid (0·4 mg) during pregnancy. However, data on uptake and adherence in many low- and middle-income countries remain fragmented and outdated. We conducted a secondary analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys from sixty-nine low- and middle-income countries to assess uptake and adherence to Fe-containing supplement

Assessing the impact of tobacco smoke exposure on earlyonset osteoarthritis: A cross-sectional analysis of secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 1999-2020.

INTRODUCTION: There is evidence that exposure to tobacco smoke is associated to a number of chronic diseases, but the evidence for an association with osteoarthritis (OA) is sparse and inconclusive. The aim of this study was to investigate whether exposure to tobacco smoke for an adult is associated with developing OA at a young age, and to assess dose-response patterns. METHODS: We conducted a pooled, cross-sectional analysis of secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2020 among US adults aged 20-54 years (n=26145). Tobacco smoke exposure was qu

Expression of microRNA induced by postoperative delirium-like behavior is associated with long-term default mode network disruption: Sequencing and a secondary analysis of resting-state fMRI data.

AIMS: Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) has been widely used in studying default mode network (DMN) changes in postoperative delirium (POD). Reproducibility and interpretability of the analyzing results remain insufficiently studied. METHODS: Delirium-like behavior was induced by tibial fixation surgery under isoflurane anesthesia. Firstly, we evaluated delirium-like behavior and inflammatory responses in hippocampus and systemic level. Then the expressions of microRNA (miRNA) and target gene were sequenced and validated. Afterwards the functional connectivity (FC)

Parental domestic violence and abuse, mental ill-health, and substance misuse and the impact on child mental health: a secondary data analysis using the UK Millennium Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Parental domestic violence and abuse (DVA), mental ill-health (MH), and substance misuse (SU) can have a negative impact on both parents and children. However, it remains unclear if and how parental DVA, MH, and SU cluster and the impacts this clustering might have. We examined how parental DVA, MH, and SU cluster during early childhood, the demographic/contextual profiles of these clusters, and how these clusters relate to child MH trajectories. METHODS: We examined data from 15,377 families in the UK Millennium Cohort Study. We used: (1) latent class analysis to create groups di

The association between cognitive ability and opioid prescribing in vulnerable older adults with chronic pain in ambulatory care: a secondary data analysis using the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerable older adults living with Alzheimer's disease or Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (AD/ADRD) and chronic pain generally receive fewer pain medications than individuals without AD/ADRD, especially in nursing homes. Little is known about pain management in older adults with AD/ADRD in the community. The aim of the study was to examine opioid prescribing patterns in individuals with chronic pain by levels of cognitive ability in ambulatory care. METHODS: We used the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), years 2002-2017, and identified three levels of cognitive imp

How do falls-risk increasing drugs modify the association between index falls and future falls and fracture burden? Secondary data analysis from the Irish longitudinal study on ageing.

BACKGROUND: Falls are a major tipping point in older adults, heralding functional decline and increased healthcare utilisation. Falls-risk-increasing drugs (FRIDs) are a key risk factor for falls, but their influence on outcomes when prescribed after a fall is under-examined. This study examined the association between an index fall requiring medical attention and subsequent 2-year risk of falls and fractures, evaluating how FRID use modifies this relationship. METHODS: We analysed data from Waves 5 and 6 of The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing, including participants ≥ 70 years with 2-year

How are depression and suicidal ideation associated with multiple health risk behaviours among adolescents? A secondary data analysis using the 2016 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Adolescents who partake in one health risk behaviour (HRB) easily adopt other HRBs, simultaneously or subsequently. Multiple HRBs might threaten adolescents' future health in adulthood. Adolescents with psychological problems have higher rates of smoking, alcohol use, early sexual initiation and activity, and illicit substance use compared with others. WHAT DOES THIS PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: A considerable number of Korean adolescents with mental health problems were engaged in multiple HRBs. For those with mental health problems, more than half of the K
