PURPOSE: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive disease leading to loss of muscle strength and control, and as such limiting patients' independence. Assistive devices can help individuals with ALS; however, their use by ALS patients is limited. To increase use rates, we expect that devices need to be tailored to ALS patients. The aim of this study was to identify wishes, requirements and values of ALS patients regarding assistive devices for the upper extremity through focus groups involving ALS patients, their relatives and medical professionals.

BACKGROUND: In childhood somatoform disorders develop and persist through bio-psycho-social processes including family variables, substantially impacting the development of children, their school attendance, and well-being. Although intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment (IIPT) has demonstrated effectiveness, maintaining long-term outcomes remains challenging, particularly given children's increased risk of developing affective disorders. Since family dynamics influence disorder development and persistence, this study aimed to investigate the potential added value of addressing parents wit

PURPOSE: Parents of children with developmental language disorder (DLD) have unique support needs. While support groups have a strong evidence base, they have not been adapted for use with this population. Our goal was to explore support needs among parents of children with DLD and their perspectives on participating in a support group.
METHOD: We conducted semistructured interviews with 12 caregivers of children with DLD. We asked questions about existing support needs, coping strategies, and hypothetical participation in a support group. Systematic text condensation was used to identify the

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) such as South Africa, people with severe mental health conditions (SMHC) typically reside with family members, who serve as their primary caregivers. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences, needs and coping strategies of caregivers with a family member with SMHC in a low-resource setting in South Africa, and their perspectives on the provision of a support group programme.
METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted, which included 22 in-depth individual interviews, 15 of them being females and 7 males ranging from

Context/Objective: Describe development, implementation, review, and redesign of a hospital-based, in-person psychoeducational intervention for caregivers of youth with spinal cord injury (SCI) ages 7-17. Design: Process evaluation/case study to describe intervention development, as well as preliminary evaluation data. Setting: Pediatric specialty hospital. Participants: 41 caregivers of youth with SCI. Interventions: Caregivers attended an in-person intervention ("Parent Forum"), after which they were randomized into two groups: one received monthly phone calls from a mental health profession

BACKGROUND: It has often been reported that young people are at high risk of mental health concerns, more so than at any other time in development over their life span. The situational factors that young people report as impacting their well-being are not addressed as often: specifically, family discord. Kids Helpline, a national service in Australia that provides free counseling online and by telephone to young people in distress, report that family discord and well-being issues are one of the major concerns reported by clients. In order to meet the preferences that young people seek when acc

This study examined Swedish suicide bereaved individuals' use of different resources in their grief work and how they value these resources. The material consisted of a web-based survey, which was analyzed with quantitative methods. The results showed that the psychosocial ill-health was severe among the suicide bereaved participants and that a majority used digital resources in their grief work. The propensity to engage in online support groups or memorial websites was not predicted by the severity of psychosocial consequences following the suicide. However, multiple regressions showed that h

OBJECTIVE: Shark bites are rare, with intense media exposure. There are no known studies of the psychological impacts of this specific type of traumatic event. This is the first study that describes those directly and indirectly affected, and evaluates the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related risk factors.
METHODS: In total, 124 members of an Australian shark-bite peer-support group were invited to complete an online survey assessing demographic, event, media and psychological factors. Response rate was 48% ( n = 60, 63% male, 44 ± 14 years). Retrospective and curre

BACKGROUND: Dementia has a huge physical, psychological, social and economic impact upon caregivers, families and societies at large. There has been a growing impetus to utilize Internet interventions given the potential scalability, and presumed cost-effectiveness and accessibility. In this paper, we describe the design of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) aiming to study the impact of online self-help programs on caregivers of people with dementia in India. The experimental group will receive an interactive training and support program and the comparison group will receive an education-onl

OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the perception of the relatives of crack users in relation to the support groups offered to this population in a Psychosocial Care Center for Alcohol and Drugs in the South of Brazil.
METHOD: the fourth-generation theoretical framework was used for evaluation, having as methodological device the hermeneutical-dialectic circle. Data collection occurred through 500 hours of observations and interviews with 12 relatives of crack users, and the comparative constant method was used in the analysis, generating the "family group" unit of meaning.
RESULTS: this group was regar

In the article, the author discusses how group work can be used to promote strength and resilience in homeless mothers, based on the current theoretical and empirical literature. The advantages of group work for homeless mothers are identified, as well as the skills and tasks associated with effective leadership of such groups. Common themes that surface in these groups are examined, as are challenges. The author's experiences facilitating a group for homeless mothers in a residential shelter are used to illustrate key points.

Many adolescents choose not to tell teachers when they have been bullied. Three studies with 12-16 year-old English adolescents addressed possible reasons. In study 1, students (N = 411, 208 females/203 males) identified reasons with no prompting. Three perceived negative outcomes were common; peers would disapprove, disclosers would feel weak/undermined, and disclosers desired autonomy. In study 2, students (N = 297, 153 females/134 males/10 unspecified) indicated how much they believed that the perceived negative outcomes would happen to them, and a substantial proportion did so. Perceived n

Over the last several years, Japan has been facing its third epidemic of methamphetamine abuse. Methamphetamine and MDMA are categorized as Amphetamine Type Stimulants (ATS), and abuse of these substances has become a worldwide problem. A nationwide mental hospital survey on substance-related psychiatric disorders in Japan has been conducted since 1987 to clarify the current situation of Japan's substance abuse and dependence. Recent surveys show that methamphetamine and organic solvents are the most common substances of abuse in hospital settings. Fifty-five percent of all the patients includ

OBJECTIVE: Although pathological gambling is an increasing problem, many mental health providers are unfamiliar with its diagnosis and treatment. To improve recognition and treatment of pathological gambling, the authors reviewed the literature on its prevalence, assessment, and treatment.
METHODS: Entries in PsycLIT and MEDLINE were examined for the years 1984 to 1998.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The prevalence of pathological gambling seems to be increasing with the spread of legalized gambling; casinos are now operating in 27 states. Point and lifetime prevalence rates of pathological gamblin

Anonymous testing of all newborn infants in 1988 revealed that one of every 61 babies born in New York City was HIV positive (New York City Department of Health, 1988). With the availability of new treatment, HIV positive children are living longer, often into their school years, and most are able to live at home. The majority of children acquire HIV through maternal transmission. Frequently, multiple family members are HIV positive. Parents, or other caregivers, are overwhelmed by depression, anxiety and grief, and urgently need childcare assistance. Finding childcare is difficult since famil

Rothman and Thomas' intervention research (IR) paradigm provides an alternative, developmental research method that is appropriate for practice research, especially at the early stages. It is more flexible than conventional experimental designs, capitalizes on the availability of small samples, accommodates the dynamism and variation in practice conditions and diverse populations, and explicitly values practitioners' insights. This article describes two studies to exemplify how the features of IR methodology are well suited to research on innovative group interventions. In one study, a face-to
