Immunity to renal leptospirosis was demonstrated in cattle vaccinated with Leptospira interrogans serotype pomona. Vaccinated cattle, challenge inoculated with virulent L interrogans serotype pomona organisms 12 months after vaccination, were resistant to renal infection; similarly inoculated, but nonvaccinated, cattle were susceptible to renal infection. Relationship was demonstrated between immunity induced in vaccinated cattle and that induced in hamsters vaccinated with a dilution of the same bacterin and later inoculated with virulent L interrogans serotype pomona organisms.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a molecular-based technology that has revolutionized diagnostics and characterization of pathogens, thus affecting how we understand the disease landscape. This technology has been found amenable to application on various strategies for management and control of infectious diseases. The main advantage with PCR technologies, when applied optimally, is the high sensitivity, specificity, efficiency, and short-turn-around time for results, thus rendering the strategy attractive to researchers in infectious diseases and public health. In this chapter, we describe

Bluetongue (BT) is a vector-borne disease of ruminants caused by bluetongue virus (BTV). After more than a decade without reported cases, BT re-emerged in Serbia in 2025. In August 2025, clinical signs consistent with BT were observed in a sheep flock in western Serbia, including fever, submandibular and head oedema, oral haemorrhages, and cyanosis of the tongue. Real-time RT-PCR targeting segment 10 confirmed BTV infection, and serotyping identified BTV-8. Virus isolation in embryonated chicken eggs yielded multiple BTV-8 isolates, which underwent whole-genome sequencing using Oxford Nanopore…

BACKGROUND: Dengue, a mosquito-borne virus continues to be a public health concern in the tropics and subtropical parts of Africa. Due to the increase of urbanization, climate change and trans-Atlantic trade, the transmitting vector, Aedes aegypti, has become prevalent hence the rapid growth of the disease, globally. In Ghana, there have been sporadic laboratory-confirmed cases of dengue reported over the years through surveillance activities. However, despite the detection of these cases, Ghana had never experienced a major outbreak (unlike its neighboring countries) until July 2024.

OBJECTIVES: Salmonella bloodstream infection (BSI) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly with increasing antimicrobial resistance. We evaluated the clinical characteristics, serogroups, resistance patterns, and outcomes of Salmonella BSI in a tertiary hospital in Saudi Arabia.
METHODS: A retrospective study at King Abdulaziz Medical City-Riyadh including all patients with Salmonella BSI from January 2016 to July 2024. Demographic, clinical, microbiological, and outcome data were analyzed using descriptive and multivariate methods.
RESULTS: A total of 102 pa

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal pneumonia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among adults, especially those over 65 years of age. Understanding pneumococcal serotype-specific epidemiology in adults and elderly is necessary to inform vaccination policies and to guide the inclusion of serotypes in pneumococcal vaccines. This study aimed to identify the serotypes causing pneumonia in the elderly.
METHODS: A systematic review search was performed using the PubMed database from 1984 to 2020. The search was limited to articles written in English. Studies assessing pneumococcal pneumonia in adults
