The critical size of a defect in the glenoid causing anterior instability of the shoulder after a Bankart repair, under physiological joint loading.

AIMS: Patients with recurrent anterior dislocation of the shoulder commonly have an anterior osseous defect of the glenoid. Once the defect reaches a critical size, stability may be restored by bone grafting. The critical size of this defect under non-physiological loading conditions has previously been identified as 20% of the length of the glenoid. As the stability of the shoulder is load-dependent, with higher joint forces leading to a loss of stability, the aim of this study was to determine the critical size of an osseous defect that leads to further anterior instability of the shoulder u

Synovial chondromatosis of the shoulder: open synovectomy and insertion of osteoarticular allogaft with internal fixation to repair intraoperative glenohumeral joint instability.

Synovial chondromatosis is a rare benign disorder characterized by chondroid metaplasia with multinodular proliferation of the synovial lining of a diarthroidal joint, bursa, or tendon sheath. These cartilaginous nodules may become embedded within the proliferating synovium and may extend into the surrounding soft tissues. They also can detach from the synovium, where they can calcify and may present as intra-articular loose bodies. Presence of these nodules leads to joint pain, dysfunction, and ultimately, destruction. Clinically, patients often present with a chronic monoarthropathy. In this

Can MyotonPRO Be Used to Assess the Muscles Surrounding the Shoulder Joint in Patients Who Have Undergone Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair (ARCR) and Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty (RSA)? A Review of the Current Evidence.

Background/Objectives: Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) and reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) are among the most commonly used surgical treatment methods. A growing number of studies assess the changes in the biomechanical and viscoelastic properties of the muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder joint. Therefore, the aim of this study was to review the literature to determine how the biomechanical properties of the muscles surrounding the shoulder joint change as a result of ARCR and RSA, and whether MyotonPRO was used in this group of patients. Methods: A review of the internat…

Does passive mobilization of shoulder region joints provide additional benefit over advice and exercise alone for people who have shoulder pain and minimal movement restriction? A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Passive mobilization of shoulder region joints, often in conjunction with other treatment modalities, is used for the treatment of people with shoulder pain and minimal movement restriction. However, there is only limited evidence supporting the efficacy of this treatment modality. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether passive mobilization of shoulder region joints adds treatment benefit over exercise and advice alone for people with shoulder pain and minimal movement restriction. DESIGN: This was a randomized controlled clinical trial with short-, medium-

Predictors of prolonged length of stay in shoulder arthroplasty: A study using the National Joint Registry and Hospital Episode Statistics for England.

INTRODUCTION: The volume of shoulder arthroplasties in the United Kingdom continues to rise, with 8221 cases recorded in the National Joint Registry (NJR) in 2023. Amid increasing demand and pressure on NHS resources, reducing hospital length of stay (LOS) is a key priority for improving efficiency. This study aimed to identify independent predictors of prolonged LOS following shoulder arthroplasty. METHODS: NJR data from April 2012 to March 2022 were linked with Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) for England. Prolonged LOS was defined as >2 nights (above the cohort median). Variables analysed

Charcot Arthropaticy of the Peelter with Ipsionteral Wrist и First Carpometakarpal Shiri Malformation I Type with Syringomyelia.

Sequential, Multifocal, and Delayed Avascular Necrosis of All Four Major Joints From Hips to Shoulders Following Corticosteroid Therapy.

Osteonecrosis is a progressive disorder characterized by compromised bone perfusion leading to structural collapse and joint dysfunction. We describe a 59-year-old male patient who received a tapered regimen of oral methylprednisolone for facial palsy in 2012. Four months after treatment, he developed discomfort in the right hip, and imaging confirmed osteonecrosis of the right femoral head. Conservative management with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and activity restriction was unsuccessful, leading to core decompression and later total hip arthroplasty (THA). Ten years later,

Predictors for day case surgery in shoulder arthroplasty: a study using the National Joint Registry and Hospital Episode Statistics for England.

INTRODUCTION: As shoulder arthroplasty volume increases in the UK, capacity challenges within a stretched health service mean that day case shoulder arthroplasty offers a value based solution. Patient selection for this is crucial and there is lack of evidence that informs guidance on patient selection for day case surgery. This study aims to use a large population reflective database, The National Joint Registry (NJR), to identify independent predictors for day case shoulder arthroplasty as well as develop a statistical tool that aids patient selection. METHOD: All shoulder arthroplasty proc

Shoulder kinematics plus contextual target information enable control of multiple distal joints of a simulated prosthetic arm and hand.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic restoration of reach and grasp function after a trans-humeral amputation requires control of multiple distal degrees of freedom in elbow, wrist and fingers. However, such a high level of amputation reduces the amount of available myoelectric and kinematic information from the residual limb. METHODS: To overcome these limits, we added contextual information about the target's location and orientation such as can now be extracted from gaze tracking by computer vision tools. For the task of picking and placing a bottle in various positions and orientations in a 3D virtual

Examination of concomitant glenohumeral pathologies in patients treated arthroscopically for calcific tendinitis of the shoulder and implications for routine diagnostic joint exploration.

BACKGROUND: Glenohumeral exploration is routinely performed during arthroscopic removal of rotator cuff calcifications in patients with calcific tendinitis of the shoulder (CTS). However, evidence on the prevalence of intraarticular co-pathologies is lacking and the benefit of glenohumeral exploration remains elusive. The aim of the present study was to assess and quantify intraoperative pathologies during arthroscopic removal of rotator cuff calcifications in order to determine whether standardized diagnostic glenohumeral exploration appears justified in CTS patients. METHODS: One hundred fo

Shoulder Strength and Total Arc Range of Motion: Associations With Upper-Extremity Joint Kinetics and Ball Velocity in Adolescent Baseball Pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent baseball pitchers are vulnerable to upper-extremity injuries because of the repetitive, high-stress nature of throwing movements. While shoulder strength and range of motion (ROM) are commonly measured, they are often interpreted in isolation during injury prevention assessments. PURPOSE: To determine the relationship between clinical measures (shoulder ROM and strength) and throwing arm joint kinetics in adolescent baseball pitchers. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study. METHODS: This study was conducted in a laboratory setting. A total of 43 adolescent basebal

Temporary joint immobilization using external skeletal fixation for recurrent medial shoulder luxation in a captive Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus).

A captive male Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus) presented with medial shoulder luxation. The animal had previously undergone left hindlimb amputation following a traffic accident and exhibited severe dysfunction of the right hindlimb due to chronic medial patellar luxation (MPL), resulting in forelimb-dependent ambulation. Closed reduction was unsuccessful, so external skeletal fixation was applied to achieve stabilization through periarticular fibrosis. The animal resumed weight-bearing shortly after surgery, and the fixator was safely removed under light sedation si
