Telemetry in a motion-sickness model implicates the abdominal vagus in motion-induced gastric dysrhythmia.

In humans, motion sickness is associated with disruption of normal gastric myoelectric activity, and it has been proposed that this results from an imbalance of autonomic nervous system activity. We used the established Suncus murinus (house musk shrew) model of motion-induced emesis to investigate the effect of horizontal motion on gastric myoelectric activity (recorded using telemetry) and the involvement of the abdominal vagi. Surgical vagotomy increased baseline dysrhythmia and reduced the dominant power of the gastric myoelectric signals. In response to motion, normal gastric myoelectric

Ancient evolutionary origins of hepatitis E virus in rodents.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV; family Hepeviridae) infections cause >40,000 human deaths annually. Zoonotic infections predominantly originate from … een 9.2 × 102 and 3.2 × 109 copies/g. We recovered 24 near-complete hepeviral genomes from rodents, shrews, and bats, all showing three partially overlapping open reading frames (ORFs), some including putative late domains that may be associated with quasi-envelopment. Rodent-derived hepeviruses grouped into five clades clustering in basal sister relatio …

Leptotrombidium imphalum Chiggers as Vector for Scrub Typhus in Human Settlements, India, 2022-2023.

Scrub typhus is a common bacterial infection in many parts of Asia. The causative agent, Orientia tsutsugamushi, is transmitted by trombiculid mite (chigger) larvae that require small mammals as maintaining hosts. We studied the prevalence of O. tsutsugamushi infection in mites and small mammals in villages and land surrounding them in South India to determine high-risk settings. We identified 12,431 mite larvae on 883 small mammals, 32% of which were bandicoot rats, 31% black rats, and 31% Asian house shrews. Leptotrombidium imphalum was the most common mite species and the only species assoc…

Animal modeling for myopia.

BACKGROUND: Myopia is one of the most common eye diseases globally, and has become an increasingly serious health concern among adolescents. Understanding the factors contributing to the onset of myopia and the strategies to slow its progression is critical to reducing its prevalence. MAIN TEXT: Animal models are key to understanding of the etiology of human diseases. Various experimental animal models have been developed to mimic human myopia, including chickens, rhesus monkeys, marmosets, mice, tree shrews, guinea pigs and zebrafish. Studies using these animal models have provided evidences…

Evaluate severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infectivity by pseudoviral particles.

Since the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in humans in late 2019, it has rapidly spread worldwide. To identify the biological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 in a normal laboratory environment (biosafety level 2 [BSL-2]), a lentiviral-based nucleocapsid was used to carry the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 onto the surface of pseudoviral particles as a surrogate model to evaluate the infective characterization of SARS-CoV-2. This study indicated that SARS-CoV-2 has extensive tissue tropism for humans and may infect monkeys and tree shrews but not ro…

Responses of wild small mammals to a pollution gradient: host factors influence metal and metallothionein levels.

We investigated how host factors (species, age, gender) modulated Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu concentrations, metallothionein levels (MTs) and their … d accumulation; (iii) an elevated metal accumulation with a sharp increase of MTs (common and pygmy shrews). In risk assessment and biomonitoring perspectives, we conclude that measurements of MTs and metals might be associated because they cannot be interpreted properly when considered separately.

Epidemiologic features of four successive annual outbreaks of bubonic plague in Mahajanga, Madagascar.

From 1995 to 1998, outbreaks of bubonic plague occurred annually in the coastal city of Mahajanga, Madagascar. A total of 1,702 clinically s … ted in the same crowded and unsanitary districts, a result of close contact among humans, rats, and shrews. Plague remains an important public health problem in Madagascar, and the potential is substantial for spread to other coastal cities and abroad.

Strengthening preparedness and response to emerging henipavirus diversity.

Henipaviruses, including the highly pathogenic Nipah virus and Hendra virus, represent a major zoonotic threat with high mortality rates and potential for human-to-human transmission. Recent discoveries of novel henipaviruses in China, Europe and other regions highlight the urgent need for enhanced surveillance in both wildlife reservoirs such as bats, shrews, rodents, and human populations, particularly in high-risk areas. Despite advancements in metagenomic sequencing, gaps in integrated surveillance, fragmented One Health implementation, and insufficient diagnostic infrastructure in large p…

Molecular detection and typing of pathogenic Leptospira species from livestock and small mammals in Uganda.

Leptospira are bacteria that cause leptospirosis in both humans and animals. Human Leptospira infections in Uganda are suspected to arise from animal-human interactions. From a nationwide survey to determine Leptospira prevalence and circulating sequence types in Uganda, we tested 2030 livestock kidney samples, and 117 small mammals (rodents and shrews) using real-time PCR targeting the lipL32 gene. Pathogenic Leptospira species were detected in 45 livestock samples but not in the small mammals. The prevalence was 6.12% in sheep, 4.25% in cattle, 2.08% in goats, and 0.46% in pigs. Sequence typ…

Evolution and neural representation of mammalian cooperative behavior.

Cooperation is common in nature and is pivotal to the development of human society. However, the details of how and why cooperation evolved remain poorly understood. Cross-species investigation of cooperation may help to elucidate the evolution of cooperative strategies. Thus, we design an automated cooperative behavioral paradigm and quantitatively examine the cooperative abilities and strategies of mice, rats, and tree shrews. We find that social communication plays a key role in the establishment of cooperation and that increased cooperative ability and a more efficient cooperative strategy…

Variables of movement amplitude and frequency in the development of motion sickness in Suncus murinus.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of different frequency and amplitude of horizontal movements to induce motion sickness and to identify gender differences and adaptation to motion stimulus in adult Suncus murinus. Each animal was subjected to a horizontal motion stimulus of 3, 7, 13, or 40 mm amplitude at a frequency of 0.5, 1, 2, or 3 Hz. The number of vomiting episodes and the latency of onset were recorded over a 10-min period. For the study of adaptation, different groups of males were exposed to repeated motion sickness (using 0.5 or 1 Hz frequency and the amplit

Effect of cholecystokinin on small intestinal motility in suncus murinus.

In a fasting gastrointestinal tract, a characteristic cyclical rhythmic migrating motor complex (MMC) occur that comprises of three phases: I, II, and III. Among these, phase III contractions propagate from the stomach to the lower intestine in mammals, including humans, dogs, and Suncus murinus (suncus). Apart from the phase III of MMC propagating from the stomach, during the gastric phase II, small intestine-originated strong contractions propagate to the lower small intestine; however, the mechanism of contractions originating in the small intestine has not been clarified. In this study, we
