[Seasickness].

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the physiological basis, clinical picture and treatment opportunities of motion sickness. Motion sickness can occur when sensory inputs from body orientation and movements in space contradict or differ from those predicted from experience. In that case disturbing symptoms can occur when a person is exposed to unfamiliar movement or perceived movement in the environment. Best known is when this occurs at sea, referred to as sea sickness. Despite progress in the technology and comfort of modern sea transit and transportation (ships, planes a

Healing options during the plague: survivor stories from a fourteenth-century canonization inquest.

Witness testimonies in the 1363 canonization inquest for Countess Delphine de Puimchel help us explore differing reactions to the first two waves of plague in 1348 and 1361, the diverse social and healing networks available to the sick, and the importance of affect in the healing process. Every witness in the inquest had lived through both the 1348 and 1361 epidemics. Their testimonies show that sufferers actively sought out healing even when they feared that none existed, healing practitioners continued to care for the sick through both waves of epidemic, and emotion played an important role

Multiple logistic regression modelling substantiates multifactor contributions associated with sick building syndrome in residential interiors in Mauritius.

This paper presents a mathematical model that depicts the relationship between the possibility of occurrence of common health problems and factors leading to Sick Building Syndrome symptoms in domestic interiors in Mauritius. The prevalence of upper respiratory symptoms (dry eyes, runny nose), central nervous system symptoms (headache, nervousness), and musculoskeletal symptoms (pain/stiffness in shoulders/neck) were found to be elevated when responses were statistically regressed to type of building and age of respondents. The model presented here will be useful in helping to identify and qua

[Participation of endogenous opioid peptides in the pathogenesis of motion sickness].

Investigations were performed with 19 healthy male volunteers to specify a possible role of endogenous opioid peptides in the pathogenesis of motion sickness. For this purpose the test subjects were administered naloxone, a specific antagonist of opiates and opioids, before rotation and during rotation in a BU-4 armchair at a rate of 30 rpm. In addition, the content of beta-endorphin in blood plasma was measured. It was discovered that naloxone exerts both prophylactic and therapeutic effects as regards the simulated motion sickness. In this respect it was more efficacious than the reference d

Temporomandibular disorder pain is associated with increased sick leave and reduced health related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are the most common reason for chronic pain in the orofacial area and significantly impact the lives of those affected. The role of lifestyle factors in TMD, however, remains less explored. This cohort study aims to estimate TMD prevalence by addressing potential selection biases and to evaluate the association between TMD and lifestyle factors with a specific focus on sick leave and health related quality of life. METHODS: By linking data on TMD in the general population in Västerbotten, northern Sweden (n = 180,000) to health survey data (n = 12

[The central neurophysiological and neurochemical mechanisms of vomiting (a review of the literature)].

The review contains the present-day evidence on neurophysiological and neurochemical mechanisms of functioning the central components of vomiting reflex. The main attention is concentrated on the role of some brain structures in motion sickness-induced vomiting. At the same time, the literature data casting doubt on traditional view of a necessary involvement of some brain structures in the genesis of vomiting induced by motion sickness are discussed. Also there are findings of studying an effect of physiologically active substances (classical neuromediators and regulatory peptides) at a neuro

Endocannabinoid signaling dissociates thermoregulatory and behavioral components of the sickness response to systemic inflammation.

Systemic inflammation triggers a coordinated sickness response that includes behavioral suppression, anorexia, and thermoregulatory alterations, often viewed as a unified syndrome. However, increasing evidence suggests that distinct neural circuits govern different components of sickness behavior. Whether central endocannabinoid system (ECS) signaling differentially regulates behavioral and thermoregulatory responses during systemic inflammation remains unclear. We therefore investigated the role of central ECS signaling in specific sickness domains induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Male Wi

Elicitation of motion sickness by head movements in the microgravity phase of parabolic flight maneuvers.

During parabolic flight maneuvers in a Boeing KC-135 aircraft 44 college students were tested for motion sickness susceptibility. These subjects were categorized as 1) insusceptible, 2) moderately susceptible, or 3) highly susceptible to motion sickness during exposure to varying gravitoinertial force levels. After categorization, they were tested in the microgravity phase of parabolic flight to see how three types of head movements affected their baseline susceptibility. The head movements evaluated included side-to-side swivel, shoulder-to-shoulder roll, and front-up head and trunk movements

The pathogenesis of sleeping sickness.

Although the clinical and pathological features of sleeping sickness have been well recognized since the beginning of the century, we still have very little idea about how these changes are brought about. A convincing role for a trypanosome-derived toxin has yet to be established and it is probable that most tissue damage results from an immunopathological reaction. An immediate type hypersensitivity reaction might account for the pruritus and urticaria sometimes encountered in patients with the infection. Autoantibodies are produced by patients with sleeping sickness but it has not been estab

International multicenter pilot study of the first comprehensive self-completed nonmotor symptoms questionnaire for Parkinson's disease: the NMSQuest study.

Nonmotor symptoms (NMS) of Parkinson's disease (PD) are not well recognized in clinical practice, either in primary or in secondary care, and are frequently missed during routine consultations. There is no single instrument (questionnaire or scale) that enables a comprehensive assessment of the range of NMS in PD both for the identification of problems and for the measurement of outcome. Against this background, a multidisciplinary group of experts, including patient group representatives, has developed an NMS screening questionnaire comprising 30 items. This instrument does not provide an ove

The importance of grandparents in extended-kin caregiving to black children with sickle cell disease.

This study examined support and care the black extended-kin system provided to 34 chronically ill black children with sickle cell anemia. Findings show that grandparents played important roles in helping provide support to the sick children's primary caregivers and to the children themselves. Grandparents provided support that complemented that of fathers, and they remained in the system of care longer than any other relative in the family. The data indicate a need to design family interventions for sick children and their parent to include grandparents.

[Living with achondroplasia- how do young persons with disproportional short stature rate their quality of life and which factors are associated with quality of life?].

OBJECTIVE: Presently, little is known aqout the quality of life (QoL) as well as the strengths and difficulties of young people with achondroplasia. This study describes these patient-reported indicators and identifies possible correlates. METHOD: At the invitation of a patient organization, a total of 89 short-statured patients aged 8 to 28 years and their parents participated in this study. QoL was assessed cross-sectionally with both generic and disease-specific instruments and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) as a brief behavioral screening. In addition to descriptive an

[Stress and rheumatoid arthritis].

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic rheumatic disease of unknown aetiology and variable severity. It is now well known that several risk factors are involved in its pathogenesis, including genetic factors and sex hormones as well as environmental factors, i.e. infections and stress. In particular stress is now recognised as an important risk factor for the onset and even more for the modulation of disease activity in RA. Many studies have clearly shown that chronic mild stress (family or professional stress) may lead to proinflammatory effects, increasing disease activity. Furthermore, a po

[Psychotherapy with physically challenged children and young people: implications of a change of paradigm].

In the light of newer scientific developments the biopsychosocial approach in psychotherapy appears to be in need of a revision. In neurosciences a paradigm change from a linear to a dynamic outlook on development as a self-organizing process guided by interactions with the environment took place under the heading of Neural Plasticity during the last ten years. This implies that the conditions of development for challenged children are not comparable with those of healthy children as the case-examples of children with Spina Bifida indicate. On this background, a pilot project was launched with

Understanding psychological distress in Meniere's disease: a systematic review.

It has long been suspected that psychological disturbance is common in Meniere's disease (MD), but there has been no systematic review of research on this topic since 1977. The aim of this review was to investigate whether components of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or health anxiety contribute to distress, so that support and psychological therapy can be tailored better to the particular problems of people with MD. We systematically identified all studies of psychological factors associated with MD between 1977 and 2004. We then tabulated the findings from each of the 28 studies to ma

Cultural models and somatic syndromes.

OBJECTIVES: To review the relevance of cultural models in the generation and amplification of somatic symptoms and syndromes. METHODS: Based on a selective review of literature, we examine evidence that cultural and personal explanatory models can contribute to the pathogenesis, symptomatology, and chronicity of medically unexplained symptoms and functional somatic syndromes. RESULTS: In the contemporary world, culture involves flows of information, roles, and institutions that offer individuals multiple models for understanding illness. Cultural models include 1) explanatory models, which m

Anxiety sensitivity and panic symptomatology: the mediator role of hypochondriacal concerns.

The present study tests the mediating role of hypochondriasis to explain the relation between anxiety sensitivity and panic symptomatology. Fifty-seven outpatients with clinically significant levels of panic symptomatology were selected to participate in the study. Measures of anxiety sensitivity, hypochondriasis, and panic symptomatology were obtained from standardized, self-administered questionnaires: the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI; Reiss, Peterson, Gursky, & McNally, 1986), the Whiteley Index of Hypochondriasis (WI; Pilowsky, 1967), and the Panic-Agoraphobic Spectrum Self-Report (PAS-S

Twenty years of research on cytokine-induced sickness behavior.

Cytokine-induced sickness behavior was recognized within a few years of the cloning and expression of interferon-alpha, IL-1 and IL-2, which occurred around the time that the first issue of Brain, Behavior, and Immunity was published in 1987. Phase I clinical trials established that injection of recombinant cytokines into cancer patients led to a variety of psychological disturbances. It was subsequently shown that physiological concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines that occur after infection act in the brain to induce common symptoms of sickness, such as loss of appetite, sleepiness, wi
