Remote Body Temperature Monitoring in Infectious Diseases: Pilot Studies in Different Artiodactyla Models.

Thermal microchips are increasingly used in animals as an alternative to rectal temperature measurements because handling is not required. These pilot studies aimed to determine the usefulness of orally administered thermal microchips in infectious disease studies of artiodactyla species when a temperature increase was expected. Thermal microchips were administered subcutaneously to two groups of seven alpacas infected with influenza C and D virus respectively and three alpacas serving as non-challenged controls and orally to one alpaca in each group. Three sheep exposed to border disease viru

Behavioural evidence of a humidistat: a temperature-compensating mechanism of hydroregulation in spotted salamanders.

The ability to control hydration state is essential for terrestrial species, especially amphibians, which are highly susceptible to dehydration. Here, we examined how temperature (17°C versus 22°C) influenced behavioural hydroregulation in spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) using a laboratory humidity gradient. Salamanders defended a constant vapour pressure deficit (VPD) between temperatures by targeting higher relative humidity at 22°C than at 17°C, possibly to compensate for increased evaporative demand at warmer temperatures. Individuals selecting higher VPDs experienced greater eva

Intra-articular knee temperature changes: ice versus cryotherapy device.

BACKGROUND: Cryotherapy is commonly applied without research documenting the intra-articular (IA) temperature changes or subject discomfort between ice and a cryotherapy device. HYPOTHESIS: The null hypothesis is that no difference would be observed in IA temperature decline or subject tolerance between ice and the cryotherapy device in normal knees. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, within-subject controlled clinical trial. METHODS: Twelve subjects had IA temperature in suprapatellar pouch and skin recorded bilaterally after application of cryotherapy versus ice. Subject tolerance was recorded by

An explorative study on the validity of various definitions of a 2·2°C temperature threshold as warning signal for impending diabetic foot ulceration.

Home monitoring of skin temperature is effective to prevent diabetic foot ulceration. We explored the validity of various definitions for the >2·2°C left-to-right threshold used as a warning signal for impending ulceration. Twenty patients with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy monitored their skin temperature with an infrared thermometer at the plantar hallux, metatarsal heads, midfoot and heel four times a day for 6 consecutive days. Environmental temperature and walking activity were monitored and associated with foot temperature. The average temperature difference between feet was 0·65°C.…

Development of different human skin colors: a review highlighting photobiological and photobiophysical aspects.

Skin color has changed during human evolution. These changes may result from adaptations to solar ultraviolet radiation (protection of sweat glands, sunburn, skin cancer, vitamin D deficiency, defence against microorganisms, etc.), and/or sexual selection. Migration to areas with high levels of UV is associated with skin darkening, while migration to areas with low levels has led to skin lightening. However, other factors may have played roles. Temperature and food have probably been secondary determinants: heat exchange with the environment is dependent on ambient temperature, and a high inta

Rate dependency and role of nitric oxide in the vascular response to direct cooling in human skin.

Local cooling of nonglabrous skin without functional sympathetic nerves causes an initial vasodilation followed by vasoconstriction. To further characterize these responses to local cooling, we examined the importance of the rate of local cooling and the effect of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibition in intact skin and in skin with vasoconstrictor function inhibited. Release of norepinephrine was blocked locally (iontophoresis) with bretylium tosylate (BT). Skin blood flow was monitored from the forearm by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) was calculated as

Cutaneous heat flow during heating and cooling in Alligator mississipiensis.

Direct in vivo measurement of heat flow across the skin of the American alligator (Alligator mississipiensis) showed increased heat flow during warming. Mean values at 25 degrees C during warming (15-35 degrees C) in air (airspeed 300 cm/s) were 17.9 +/- 92 SE cal/cm2 per h (mean alligator wt 3.27 kg). Cooling heat flow at the same temperature was 13.6 +/- 0.57 cal/cm2 per h. Subdermal heat flow was reduced during warming and was not significantly different from cutaneous heat flow during cooling. This indicated that the alligator was able to control its rate of heat exchange with the environm

Monitoring temperature in children undergoing anaesthesia: a comparison of methods.

Children undergoing anaesthesia are prone to hypothermia. Perioperative monitoring of patient temperature is, therefore, standard practice. … oral temperatures were superior to axillary temperatures for detection of mild hypothermia (<36°C). Skin temperature showed a large variation from nasopharyngeal measurements. Our findings indicate that measured temperatures vary between sites. Understanding these variations is important for interpreting temperature readings.

Impact of daily cooling treatment on skin inflammation in patients with chronic venous disease.

People with chronic venous disease are at high risk for developing venous leg ulcers. Inflammation is posited as a pathological factor for this chronic condition as evidenced by persistently elevated skin temperature. As part of a larger trial to test the effects of a cooling regimen on leg ulcer prevention, the objective of this preliminary study was to evaluate the first 30 days of intense daily cooling. Compared to a placebo control cuff, a gel cuff applied to the most severely affected lower leg skin for 30 min daily showed no statistically significant differences between temperatures take…

A difference of 5 degrees C between ear and rectal temperatures in a febrile patient.

A 4-year-old boy with a history of seizures triggered by fever presented at an emergency department (ED) with tachycardia, skin vasoconstriction, and a rectal temperature of 42.2 degrees C. However, his ear temperature (as repeatedly measured in two ears, by two experienced nurses, and with two infrared thermometers) was between 36.4 degrees C and 37.6 degrees C. Antipyretic therapy resulted in skin vasodilation, a rapid decrease of rectal temperature, restoration of heart rate, and disappearance of the difference between the two temperatures. Seizures did not occur. This case shows that infra

Thermal, Cardiovascular, and Perceptual Responses to Exercise Heat Stress in Burn Survivors with and without Whole-Body Skin Wetting.

INTRODUCTION: Burn survivors experience higher rates of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke compared to non-burned individuals. These responses are due, in part, to lower exercise adherence perhaps associated with impaired thermoregulation. Improving heat dissipation and exercise "comfort" may minimize this barrier to exercise adherence in burn survivors. PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that whole-body skin wetting would attenuate the rise in core temperature and heart rate, as well as improve perceptual responses, during exercise in the heat in burn survivors relative to non-burne

Impact of Imaging Protocols on Thermal Detection of Pressure Injuries: Threshold versus Deep Learning Across Skin Tones.

Pressure injuries represent a significant healthcare challenge requiring early detection to prevent severe complications. While thermal imaging shows promise for detecting early pressure related temperature changes, its robustness across varying imaging conditions and diverse patient populations remains unclear. This study systematically evaluated how imaging protocol variations (lighting, distance, positioning, camera type) and participant skin tone influence classification model performance for thermal cooling detection. Using a controlled cooling protocol to simulate early pressure injury t
