Negative Mood is Associated with Sociobehavioral Factors Contributing to Cardiovascular Risk in an Immigrant Population.

BACKGROUND: Immigrants to the United States, on average, accumulate cardiovascular risk after resettlement, including obesity. There is a need to co-create interventions to address these disparities, and mood may be an important mediating factor. METHODS: The Healthy Immigrant Community (HIC) study, set in southeast Minnesota, enrolled 475 adult participants in a weight loss intervention to reduce cardiovascular risk. Baseline questionnaires assessed mood, nutrition, physical activity, self-efficacy for healthy eating and physical activity, social support, and cohesion. A single-item mood rat

Factors Associated With Psychological Adjustment in Adults With Cleft Lip and/or Palate: Findings From a National Survey in the United Kingdom.

OBJECTIVES: Research has identified adults born with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) to be at risk of poorer psychological outcomes compared to the general population. This study investigated factors that may contribute to positive and negative adjustment in adults born with CL/P. DESIGN: A survey was designed and distributed by the Cleft Lip and Palate Association in collaboration with the Centre for Appearance Research CAR at the University of the West of England (UWE). There were 207 eligible responses (95% completed online) received between July and October 2018. Dependent variables includ

Child emotional security and interparental conflict.

Guided by the emotional security hypothesis developed by Davies & Cummings (1994), studies were conducted to test a conceptual refinement of children's adjustment to parental conflict in relation to hypotheses of other prominent theories. Study 1 examined whether the pattern of child responses to simulations of adult conflict tactics and topics was consistent with the emotional security hypothesis and social learning theory in a sample of 327 Welsh children. Supporting the emotional security hypothesis, child reports of fear, avoidance, and involvement were especially prominent responses to de

When Traumas Collide: Implications and Coping Strategies of Israeli Survivors at the Intersection of Collective War Trauma and Past Sexual Violence.

War as a collective trauma can severely harm the psychosocial well-being of individuals, disrupting their sense of safety, autonomy, and meaning of life. War also weakens individual and communal senses of safety and stability, erodes social cohesion, and forces large-scale displacement, as civilians seek security elsewhere. Research indicates that individuals with prior exposure to traumatic events may be more susceptible to experiencing distress when confronted by additional stressors, especially in times of continuous traumatic stress, such as war. This study examines the impact of the Octob…

The Field of Gender Through Metaphors: The Dilemma of Female and Male Referees in the Minds of Football Fans.

The perception of football as a male-dominated sport by society, coupled with the socio-cultural and economic barriers faced by women, has constrained their presence in the domain of football and revealed the manifestation of gender norms within the sport. This exclusion further masculinizes sport, negatively affecting social unity and cohesion, and deepening inequality within sport. Within this context, the study seeks to reveal how football fans perceive female and male referees through metaphorical representations. Participants, selected using purposive sampling, are individuals who regular

Loss of sleep when it is needed most - Consequences of persistent developmental sleep disruption: A scoping review of rodent models.

Sleep is an essential component of development. Developmental sleep disruption (DSD) impacts brain maturation and has been associated with significant consequences on socio-emotional development. In humans, poor sleep during infancy and adolescence affects neurodevelopmental outcomes and may be a risk factor for the development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other neuropsychiatric illness. Given the wide-reaching and enduring consequences of DSD, identifying underlying mechanisms is critical to best inform interventions with translational capacity. In rodents, studies have identified som

The Roseto effect: a 50-year comparison of mortality rates.

OBJECTIVES: Earlier studies found striking differences in mortality from myocardial infarction between Roseto, a homogeneous Italian-American community in Pennsylvania, and other nearby towns between 1955 and 1965. These differences disappeared as Roseto became more "Americanized" in the 1960s. The present study extended the comparison over a longer period of time to test the hypothesis that the findings from this period were not due to random fluctuations in small communities. METHODS: We examined death certificates for Roseto and Bangor from 1935 to 1985. Age-standardized death rates and mo

Traditional music, recovery-oriented psychological functioning, and psychological resilience among ethnic minority communities in Southwest China: a sequential explanatory mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Traditional music is an integral component of cultural identity, collective participation, emotional expression, and social relationships among ethnic minority communities in Southwest China. However, the pathways through which Traditional Music Engagement (TME) may relate to recovery-oriented psychological functioning (ROPF), Perceived Social Support (PSS), and Psychological Resilience (PR) remain insufficiently understood. This study examined the associations among TME, Cultural Identity (CI), Community Participation (CP), Emotional Expression through Music (EEM), ROPF, PSS, an

A qualitative study of the dimensions of patients' perceptions of facial disfigurement after head and neck cancer surgery.

The study aim was to explore the underlying dimensions of patients' perceptions and experiences of facial disfigurement following surgery for cancer treatment, using a qualitative approach based on individual in-depth interviews. Data analysis and interpretation consisted of separating responses into phrases or statements with a single thematic aspect. Subsequently, a number of dimensions and categories were created using a deductive-inductive content analysis. Three main categories emerged: discovering of the cancer, coping with the disease and disfigurement, and reconstructing a new identity

Neighborhood-Level Socioeconomic Vulnerability and Perioperative Complications in Hysterectomy for Benign Indications.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between neighborhood-level socioeconomic vulnerability, measured by the VVI (Vizient Vulnerability Index) and perioperative complications after hysterectomy for benign conditions. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed patients who underwent hysterectomy for benign indications (2015-2024) using the Vizient Clinical Database. Patients were categorized into VVI quartiles (quartile 1, least vulnerable; quartile 4, most vulnerable) based on census tract data across nine socioeconomic domains: public safety, transportation, social cohesion, environ…

Evaluation of QoL in neurofibromatosis patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis study.

BACKGROUND: The neurofibromatoses (NF) are a group of genetic disorders that interfere negatively with the quality of life (QoL) and influence physical, emotional and social statuses. Studying the effects of neurofibromatoses on various aspects of QoL seems important to implement beneficial strategies in increasing the QoL of NF patients. The aim of this study was to review the literature on quality of life in patients with NF and quantitatively evaluate the effects of Neurofibromatosis on various aspects of quality of life by synthesizing available studies. METHODS: This article is written a

Augmentation of frontoparietal gamma-band phase coupling enhances human altruistic behavior.

Cooperation, productivity, and cohesion in human societies depend on altruism, the tendency to share resources with others even though this is costly. While altruism is a widely shared social norm, people vary strongly in their inclination to behave altruistically, in particular across situations with different types of inequality in resource distribution. What neurobiological factors underlie this variability? And can these be targeted by interventions to enhance altruistic behavior? Here, we build on electroencephalography (EEG) evidence that altruistic choices during disadvantageous inequal
