Previous findings suggest that social anxiety disorder may be best characterized as having a dimensional latent structure (Kollman et al., 2006; Weeks et al., 2009). We attempted to extend previous taxometric investigations of social anxiety by examining the latent structure of social anxiety disorder symptoms in a large sample comprised of social anxiety disorder patients (i.e., putative taxon members) and community residents/undergraduate respondents (i.e., putative complement class members). MAXEIG and MAMBAC were performed with indicator sets drawn from a self-report measure of social anxi

This study explored change in social-communicative symptoms in 140 individuals with childhood autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses. Trajectories of caregiver-reported social-communicative symptoms were examined for three groups (verbal, delayed speech, minimally verbal) from ages 2 to 19 years. Groups showed comparable levels of social-communicative impairment at 2 years and significant decreases in overall symptom levels across the 17-year period (P < .001). Across three subdomains, main effects of time and language (P < .001) reflected patterns of overall improvement, although children w

Max is a 21-month old boy with speech and language delay presenting for diagnostic clarification and treatment recommendations. Max was born at 37 weeks after a twin gestation. He is medically healthy and lives at home with supportive parents and a typically developing twin sister. Max began speech and language therapy when he was 14 months old.Max spoke his first word at 16 months. He uses fewer than 10 words or word approximations; however, he does not use these words spontaneously to communicate. Max has decreased use of eye contact and rarely uses nonverbal means of communication. Max whin

Internet-based treatments for social anxiety disorder (SAD) have been widely studied in unguided and therapist-guided formats and, more recently, in group-guided formats that include guided online discussion forums. Little is known about what participants communicate and which processes unfold within these forum groups. This mixed-methods study analyzed communication in therapist-guided small-group forums integrated into an internet-based cognitive behavioral self-help program for SAD. Data stemmed from a three-arm randomized controlled trial and were limited to the forum arm. A qualitative co

Research on urban community effects on health has considered a range of collective social processes as potential links between economic disadvantage and health. We extend this focus to deaths of despair (DoD; drug overdose mortality and suicide) in rural counties by examining the association between a novel indicator of economic cynicism (perceptions that local communities have been 'left behind' economically) and DoD. We also consider a range of other aspects of social climate potentially relevant to health, including social network ties, collective efficacy and social and physical disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized mainly by deficits in social communication and stereotyped and restricted behavior and interests with a male to female bias of 4.2/1. Social behavior in ASD animal models is commonly analyzed in males, and seldomly in females, using the widely implemented three-chambers test procedure. Here, we implemented a novel procedure, the Live Mouse Tracker (LMT), combining artificial intelligence, machine learning procedures and behavioral measures. We used it on mice that were prenatally exposed to valproic acid (VPA) (450 m

Although affective irritability is a common and concerning problem for autistic youth, limited research has examined relations among core autism characteristics and irritability. Therefore, this study investigated potential associations among types of restricted/repetitive behaviors (RRBs) and social communication challenges and irritability in autistic children and adolescents. Participants were 107 autistic youth recruited from a university-based autism clinical research program. Two hierarchical multiple regressions were conducted with Affective Reactivity Index as the dependent variable. C

Social anxiety disorder is a prevalent mental health condition that significantly impairs social interactions, academic performance, and professional functioning in children, adolescents, and youth. This study aimed to investigate the global prevalence of social anxiety disorder across these developmental stages. Six electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar) were systematically searched for studies related to the prevalence of social anxiety disorder in children, adolescents and youth. Random-effects models were employed for data analysis a

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a genetic disorder that conveys a significant risk for the development of social behavior disorders, including autism and schizophrenia. Also known as DiGeorge syndrome, 22q11DS is the second most common genetic disorder and is characterized by an elevated risk for immune dysfunction, up to 77% of individuals have an identifiable immune deficiency. We hypothesize that this immune dysfunction could contribute to the elevated risk of impaired social behavior seen in 22q11DS. The current study begins to elucidate these immune deficits and link them with the

This study aimed to learn about the experiences of families of individuals with a dual diagnosis of Down syndrome (DS) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (DS-ASD), and to document the journey from early concerns to diagnosis and intervention. Caregivers completed an online survey describing their journey raising a child with DS-ASD. Survey responses were analyzed qualitatively and coded into categories to highlight common themes. Stereotypy, severe communication impairments, and behavioral difficulties prompted caregivers to pursue further evaluation. There was a mean 4.65-year gap between fir

Communication enables social connection, autonomy and identity, making it a fundamental domain of human functioning. In lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs), progressive neurological dysfunction can severely disrupt speech, language and social communication, resulting in profound isolation and reduced quality of life. LSDs are a heterogeneous group of more than 70 inherited metabolic disorders caused by lysosomal dysfunction and substrate accumulation, leading to severe neurological consequences and multisystem pathology. LSDs are classified according to the biochemical nature of the accumulating

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder in children. It is diagnosis by two main behavioral phenotypes i.e. social-communication impairments and repetitive behavior. ASD is complex disorder with unsolved etiology due to multiple genes involvement, epigenetic mechanism and environmental factors. Valproic acid (VPA), a teratogen is known to induce characteristic features related to ASD in rodents. Numerous studies suggest the potential therapeutic effects of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) in different brain disorders. This research evaluates the

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a behaviorally defined neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by decreased reciprocal social interaction, abnormal communication, and repetitive behaviors with restricted interest. As diagnosis is based on clinical criteria, any potentially relevant rodent models of this heterogeneous disorder should ideally recapitulate these diverse behavioral traits. The BTBR T+ Itpr3tf/J (BTBR) mouse is an established animal model of ASD, displaying repetitive behaviors such as increased grooming, as well as cognitive inflexibility. With respect to social interaction an

BACKGROUND: Community stigma toward people with opioid use disorder (OUD) can impede access to harm reduction services and treatment with medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). Such community OUD stigma is partially rooted in community-level social and economic conditions, yet there remains a paucity of large-scale quantitative data examining community-level factors associated with OUD stigma. We examined whether rurality, social inequity, and racialized segregation across communities from four states in the HEALing Communities Study (HCS) were associated with 1) greater perceived communi

BACKGROUND: There is a significant body of evidence documenting the speech and language abnormalities found in adult psychiatric disorders. These speech and language impairments can create additional social barriers for the individual and may hinder effective communication in psychiatric treatment and management. However, the role of speech and language therapy in this patient population has not been extensively studied.
AIMS: Speech and language therapy is reported in a 53-year-old adult male patient who presented with severe poverty of speech as part of his diagnosis of schizophrenia. The a
