A preliminary investigation of reaction time variability in relation to social functioning in children evaluated for ADHD.

Reaction time variability (RTV) is a ubiquitous phenomenon in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Few studies have examined RTV in relation to functional outcomes such as social impairment in children with ADHD. In this exploratory study, we investigated whether RTV is associated with social functioning in children at risk for ADHD. Specifically, we explored the association between RTV (tau derived from correct go trials of a Stop-Signal task) and social functioning in 198 children ages 7-12 years referred for an ADHD evaluation. Social functioning measures included child and/or p

Neurosciences, empathy, and healthy interpersonal relationships: recent findings and implications for counseling psychology.

In this article, we define the construct of empathy and its relevance for counseling psychology. The importance of deficits in empathic processes for most of the psychological disorders is presented within the context of the social brain hypothesis (Frith, 2007). We provide a review of empirical research about the neural correlates of empathy in terms of both the central and peripheral nervous system. We present recent evidence on the cortical and subcortical regions involved in different dimensions of empathy-emotional contagion, cognitive and emotional empathy, and self-regulation. Regarding

'Low mileage bias' and related policy implications--a cautionary note.

This research examined a relationship asserted in recent literature in the field of traffic safety and injury prevention--that a significant indicator for elevated crash risk among older drivers, and potential trigger for individualized assessment at license renewal, is a low (<3000 km) annual driving distance. Sampling problems in earlier reports, in particular a reliance on self-report measures of both exposure and crash involvement, are highlighted. A pattern of misestimation for those who self-report an extremely low or extremely high number of miles driven is documented, that casts seriou

Maternal depression and child internalizing: the moderating role of child emotion regulation.

This study tests a model of children's emotion regulation (ER) as a moderator of the link between maternal depression and child internalizing problems. Participants were 78 children (ages 4 to 7), including 45 children of mothers with a history of childhood-onset depression (COD) and 33 children of mothers who had never been depressed. ER was assessed observationally during a laboratory mood induction. ER behaviors were empirically reduced into 3 categories: (a) negative focus on delay, (b) positive reward anticipation, and (c) behavioral distraction. Linear mixed models indicated that positiv

Domestic violence against 116 Turkish housewives: a field study.

In order to clarify the factors associated with domestic violence against married women and to learn the attitude of women toward violence and toward the inquiry of health personnel about domestic violence, a cross-sectional survey was conducted on 116 married Turkish women. The prevalence of domestic physical violence was found to be 41.4%, emotional violence 25.9%, sexual violence 8.6%, and controlling behavior 77.6%. Physical violence experienced at any time in their life was 50.9%. Rate of physical violence was found related with lower formal education of both women and husbands and their

Why risk persists: A social cognitive theory-based explanation of raw-fish consumption in clonorchiasis-endemic areas.

BACKGROUND: Raw-fish consumption remains the primary driver of clonorchiasis in endemic areas, yet public health strategies emphasize disease awareness rather than the psychosocial factors sustaining this culturally embedded practice. Guided by Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), this study aimed to quantify the behavioral pathways underlying raw-fish consumption and identify actionable points for prevention. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from May to June 2025 among residents in Xinhui District, China, a representative endemic area for raw-fish consumption. A path model incorpora

The Role of Social Value in Data-Intensive Health Research.

Data-intensive health research complicates traditional requirements for informed consent, due to the amount of data contributors and data points, the open-ended nature of research questions, and repeated or secondary data use. To still enable data-intensive health research, there is a move towards other-generally lower-standards for consent such as opt-out systems, in current developments such as the European Health Data Space (EHDS). This is premised on the social value that data-intensive health research is assumed to provide through advancing research and innovation. Traditionally, social v

Reading Intention Where There Is None: Neurobehavioral Correlates of Intention Attribution of Morally Ambiguous Scenarios in Borderline Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by altered social cognition, including a tendency to bias intention attribution in ambiguous situations. However, the neurobehavioral mechanisms underlying this tendency remain poorly understood. Here, we examined whether intention attribution is disturbed in BPD and reflected in behavioral bias and altered neural processing of morally ambiguous social information. METHODS: A total of 71 individuals with BPD (55 female, 16 male) and 72 healthy controls (56 female, 16 male) were included. Participants viewed harm-based scenario

Attenuated attention engagement and sensorimotor resonance to social events in first-episode adolescent depression: Evidence from EEG oscillations.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms may disrupt social brain development during adolescence, resulting in adverse long-term quality of life. Yet, little is known regarding the cognitive and neural changes during the processing of social interactions in adolescents with first-episode depression, particularly from an allocentric perspective. METHODS: We used electroencephalography (EEG) to assess two neural indicators during the observation of others' interactions, including sensorimotor mu suppression and occipital alpha-band activity, in 22 adolescents with first-episode major depressive disorder

Social support in cyberspace: a content analysis of communication within a Huntington's disease online support group.

OBJECTIVE: Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited disorder, characterized by a progressive degeneration of the brain. Due to the nature of the symptoms, the genetic element of the disease, and the fact that there is no cure, HD patients and those in their support network often experience considerable stress and anxiety. With an expansion in Internet access, individuals affected by HD have new opportunities for information retrieval and social support. The aim of this study is to examine the provision of social support in messages posted to a HD online support group bulletin board. METHODS:

Face to face: visual scanpath evidence for abnormal processing of facial expressions in social phobia.

Cognitive models of social phobia propose that cognitive biases and fears regarding negative evaluation by others result in preferential attention to interpersonal sources of threat. These fears may account for the hypervigilance and avoidance of eye contact commonly reported by clinicians. This study provides the first objective examination of threat-related processing in social phobia. It was predicted that hyperscanning (hypervigilance) and eye avoidance would be most apparent in social phobia for overt expressions of threat. An infrared corneal reflection technique was used to record visua

P300 event-related potentials and cognitive function in social phobia.

The aim of the study was to investigate abnormalities of event-related potentials (ERPs) in social phobia patients indicating deficits in speed and amount of perceptual and cognitive resources as well as relationships between ERPs and cognitive functioning. ERPs were recorded from 19 EEG leads in a two-tone oddball paradigm in medication-free patients with DSM-IV social phobia (n=25) and in age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC). Neuropsychological test performance was administered. Compared with the HC group, patients with social phobia showed reductions in N1 at temporal leads, N2 and P3

Dorsal anterior cingulate cortex activity during cognitive challenge in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with aberrant emotional information processing while little is known about non-emotional cognitive processing biases. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) has been implicated in SAD neuropathology and is activated both by emotional and non-affective cognitive challenges like the Multisource Interference Task (MSIT). METHODS: Here, we used fMRI to compare dACC activity and test performance during MSIT in 69 SAD patients and 38 healthy controls. In addition to patient-control comparisons, we examined whether neural activity in the d

Left Atrial and Left Ventricular Function and Remodeling Following Percutaneous Mitral Valve Repair.

We read with great interest the recent article by Park H et al (1), entitled "Association between job insecurity and cardiovascular disease among workers with type 2 diabetes mellitus". The study provides important evidence on the impact of labor-related social determinants on cardiovascular health in a particularly vulnerable population: workers living with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Previous research has consistently shown that psychosocial work-related factors, including job strain and employment insecurity, are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (2, 3). Remotely delivered information, training and support for informal caregivers of people with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Many people with dementia are cared for at home by unpaid informal caregivers, usually family members. Caregivers may experience a range of physical, emotional, financial and social harms, which are often described collectively as caregiver burden. The degree of burden experienced is associated with characteristics of the caregiver, such as gender, and characteristics of the person with dementia, such as dementia stage, and the presence of behavioural problems or neuropsychiatric disturbances. It is a strong predictor of admission to residential care for people with dementia. Psych

Increased c-Fos expression in lateral habenula during social transmission of negative valence in prairie voles.

BACKGROUND: Social learning is the process of acquiring social skills, new information, or associating negative or positive valence to a context through the observation of others and through direct social interaction with others. Neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder show deficits in social salience and reciprocal affective responses. Social learning implicates the basolateral amygdala (BLA), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and anterior insula (AI). The lateral habenula (LHb), a brain area renowned for its role in negative reinforcement learning, has not been yet exten

Cognitive and Neural Mechanisms of Social Communication Dysfunction in Primary Progressive Aphasia.

Mounting evidence suggests that, in parallel with well-defined changes in language, primary progressive aphasia (PPA) syndromes display co-occurring social cognitive impairments. Here, we explored multidimensional profiles of carer-rated social communication using the La Trobe Communication Questionnaire (LCQ) in 11 semantic dementia (SD), 12 logopenic progressive aphasia (LPA) and 9 progressive non-fluent aphasia (PNFA) cases and contrasted their performance with 19 Alzheimer's disease (AD) cases, 26 behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) cases and 31 healthy older controls.
