To investigate the quality of life of children with defecation disorders by comparing with a healthy control group. A cross-sectional study enrolled children with defecation disorders from a tertiary hospital (June-July 2024) and age- and sex-frequency matched healthy controls from three communities (August 2024). Participants were recruited according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Quality of life was assessed using the Chinese version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory™ 4.0, encompassing physical, emotional, social, and cognitive dimensions (scored 0-100). A Literature Review Examining Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy for Individuals Diagnosed With Social Anxiety Disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a specific subtype of anxiety disorder where individuals experience uncomfortable social situations that induce anxious feelings including nervousness and panic. Computer technology has been applied in interventions for many mental health disorders. We aim to understand and explore the use of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) to treat adults with SAD. We conducted a literature search using relevant mesh keywords in PubMed and PsycINFO. Six studies met inclusion criteria in our final qualitative synthesis review. Results showed a significant reduction in S

Effects of daily activities and social behavior on blood-pressure elevation.

This study examined the effects of daily activities and social behavior on the blood-pressure elevation in 21 normotensives, 20 borderline hypertensives, and 20 sustained essential hypertensives. Blood pressures were recorded over a 24-hr period using an ambulatory monitor while subjects recorded their daily activities and social involvement at each cuff inflation. Results indicated that only a moderate proportion of the blood pressure readings of the two clinical groups exceeded 140/90 mm Hg. Results also suggested that the blood pressures of normotensives were more responsive to changes in p

Mutual influences on maternal depression and child adjustment problems.

Often undetected and poorly managed, maternal depression and child adjustment problems are common health problems and impose significant burden to society. Studies show evidence of mutual influences on maternal and child functioning, whereby depression in mothers increases risk of emotional and behavioral problems in children and vice versa. Biological mechanisms (genetics, in utero environment) mediate influences from mother to child, while psychosocial (attachment, child discipline, modeling, family functioning) and social capital (social resources, social support) mechanisms mediate transac

Building and Testing of a Conceptual Model to Describe and Measure the Health of People as Affected by Post-traumatic Stress Disorder During Social Unrest: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling.

BACKGROUND: Social unrest affects people's health and well-being. People's health-related needs during social unrest are concerns in both research and clinical practice. This study aimed to build and test a framework to describe and understand the health status and needs of people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during social unrest. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional survey. A total of 460 people who had experienced post-traumatic distress as a result of the social unrest in 2019 and 2020 were included. A conceptual model comprised four essential areas, namely posttraumatic

Gender differences in the victim-offender overlap for dating violence: The role of early violent socialization.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious problem in dating relationships among college students. The cycle of violence and social learning perspectives suggest that early violent socialization - inclusive of adverse socialization (i.e., prosocial violent messages, witnessing violence, or victimization by someone other than family) and experiences of child maltreatment - is one of the most robust risk factors for IPV involvement. OBJECTIVE: The effects of early violent socialization were explored to understand the underlying mechanisms that influence victimization, perpetration

Emergency department interventions for homelessness: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The social determinants of health are economic and social conditions that contribute to health. Access to housing is a major social determinant of health and homeless patients often rely on emergency departments (EDs) for their healthcare. These patients are frequently discharged back to the street which further perpetuates the cycle of homelessness and negatively affects their health. Previous work has described the financial and systems implications of ED-housed interventions for homeless patients; this review summarizes ED-based interventions that seek to improve the social dete

Non-response Bias in Social Risk Factor Screening Among Adult Emergency Department Patients.

Healthcare organizations increasingly use screening questionnaires to assess patients' social factors, but non-response may contribute to selection bias. This study assessed differences between respondents and those refusing participation in a social factor screening. We used a cross-sectional approach with logistic regression models to measure the association between subject characteristics and social factor screening questionnaire participation. The study subjects were patients from a mid-western state safety-net hospital's emergency department. Subjects' inclusion criteria were: (1) ≥ 18 ye
