Social support and cancer screening among older black Americans.

BACKGROUND: Age-adjusted cancer mortality is 27% higher for Black Americans than for the general U.S. population, which may result from inappropriate use of cancer detection tests. Social support has been shown to affect adjustment to breast cancer and survival, but it has not been studied as a predictor of use of preventive health care services in the older population. Our hypothesis is that larger social networks are associated with greater utilization of cancer-screening tests in the older population. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between social suppo

Relational, cognitive, and structural social capital in shaping livelihood resilience in informal agri-food systems.

INTRODUCTION: Smallholder livelihoods in the Global South operate under persistent uncertainty shaped by price volatility, climate variability, and limited institutional protection. While informal agri-food systems are often framed as inefficient or transitional, their persistence raises questions about how coordination and resilience are sustained in the absence of formal governance structures. This study examines how the relational, cognitive, and structural dimensions of social capital interact to shape livelihood resilience. METHODS: This study draws on qualitative research conducted in E

By myself and liking it? Predictors of distinct types of solitude experiences in daily life.

OBJECTIVE: Solitude is a ubiquitous experience, often confused with loneliness, yet sometimes sought out in daily life. This study aimed to identify distinct types of solitude experiences from everyday affect/thought patterns and to examine how and for whom solitude is experienced positively versus negatively. METHOD: One hundred community-dwelling adults aged 50-85 years (64% female; 56% East Asian, 36% European, 8% other/mixed heritage) and 50 students aged 18-28 years (92% female; 42% East Asian, 22% European, 36% other/mixed) each completed approximately 30 daily life assessments over 10

Social perception in deaf individuals: A meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

Deaf individuals may report difficulties in social interactions. However, whether these difficulties depend on deafness affecting social brain circuits is controversial. Here, we report the first meta-analysis comparing brain activations of hearing and (prelingually) deaf individuals during social perception. Our findings showed that deafness does not impact on the functional mechanisms supporting social perception. Indeed, both deaf and hearing control participants recruited regions of the action observation network during performance of different social tasks employing visual stimuli, and in

Divergent default mode network connectivity during social perception in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

AIM: The 22q11.2 deletion (22q11DS) syndrome is a neurogenetic condition marked by social dysfunction. A major network involved in social cognition is the default mode network (DMN). To date, no study has investigated DMN functional connectivity during socio-cognitive paradigms in 22q11DS. METHOD: We used the psychophysiological analysis (PPI) to investigate functional connectivity of the DMN during social perception in 22 participants with 22q11DS and 22 healthy controls. Association between DMN connectivity and prodromal symptoms was also examined. RESULTS: 22q11DS patients exhibited stron

Sexual Behavior and Network Characteristics and Their Association with Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infections among Black Men Who Have Sex with Men in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Black men who have sex with men (MSM) have a high prevalence of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and individual risk behavior does not fully explain the higher prevalence when compared with other MSM. Using the social-ecological framework, we evaluated individual, social and sexual network, and structural factors and their association with prevalent STIs among Black MSM. METHODS: The HIV Prevention Trials Network 061 was a multi-site cohort study designed to determine the feasibility and acceptability of a multi-component intervention for Black MSM in six US citie

Who's On Your Team? Classifying Dementia Caregiving Networks and Associations With the Well-being of Caregivers and Care Recipients With Dementia.

OBJECTIVES: While caregivers are typically enmeshed in broad networks of family and friends assisting with care, this network has been neglected in favor of examining a "primary" caregiver. This study examines types of family and unpaid friend networks for individuals with dementia and how one's network type relates to the well-being of care recipients with dementia and their caregivers. METHODS: Data are drawn from the nationally representative 2017 National Health and Aging Trends Study and associated National Study of Caregiving. The sample includes 336 dementia care networks (network size

Evaluating peer-influence processes in a prison-based therapeutic community: a dynamic network approach.

BACKGROUND: The Therapeutic Community (TC) is a common treatment modality for incarcerated individuals with substance use disorders. TCs rely on peer group processes to promote lasting behavioral and identity change, yet prior research has not adequately tested the peer influence mechanisms underlying the theoretical model. This study applied dynamic network analysis to estimate peer influence processes central to TC philosophy. METHODS: A stochastic actor-oriented model (SAOM) was applied to ten months of social network data collected from prisoner surveys within a TC unit (N = 62) in a medi

The Influence of Social Support on Smoking Cessation Treatment Adherence Among HIV+ Smokers.

INTRODUCTION: The high prevalence of smoking among people living with HIV is a significant problem. Nonadherence to smoking cessation pharmacotherapy is a barrier for successfully quitting. The current study investigated the extent to which social support variables impact adherence and cessation. METHODS: Participants were 444 HIV+ smokers who provided data on nicotine patch adherence, social support, and smoking. We conducted a path analysis to estimate (1) the effects of six social support indicators at baseline on nicotine patch adherence; (2) the effect of patch adherence on 7-day point p

Feasibility of using social networking technologies for health research among men who have sex with men: a mixed methods study.

This study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of using social networking as a health research platform among men who have sex with men (MSM). Fifty-five MSM (primarily African American and Latino) were invited to join a "secret" group on the social networking website, Facebook. Peer leaders, trained in health education, posted health-related content to groups. The study and analysis used mixed (qualitative and quantitative) methods. Facebook conversations were thematically analyzed. Latino and African American participants voluntarily used social networking to discuss health-rela

Loneliness, connection, and personal networks among perinatal individuals with opioid use disorder: A convergent parallel mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is highly pervasive among women with opioid use disorder (OUD). Emerging evidence indicates that loneliness, as well as social connection and social support, may influence OUD recovery outcomes. Given that both loneliness and risk for return to opioid misuse are heightened during the postpartum period, a better understanding of loneliness within perinatal OUD is warranted. METHODS: We conducted a convergent parallel mixed methods study with participants who were either pregnant (≥20 weeks gestation) or postpartum (≤25 weeks post-delivery) and had OUD. Data collection in

A psychometric network perspective of a brief measure of fear of monkeypox.

Mpox symptoms and strategies implemented to control its spread may be associated with fear, anxiety, anger, boredom, exhaustion, social isolation, and stigma. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Monkeypox Fear Scale (MFS) in 421 Peruvian adults from the Piura region, based on a psychometric network model. Additionally, this study assessed the centrality, stability, and accuracy of the symptom network associated with fear of Mpox. The participants were selected through non-probability sampling, with a mean age of 26.4 years (SD = 9.3), and the majority were women (23

Analysis of Molecular Networks in the Cerebellum in Chronic Schizophrenia: Modulation by Early Postnatal Life Stressors in Murine Models.

Despite the growing importance of the cerebellum as a region highly vulnerable to accumulating molecular errors in schizophrenia, limited information is available regarding altered molecular networks with potential therapeutic targets. To identify altered networks, we conducted one-shot liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in postmortem cerebellar cortex in schizophrenia and healthy individuals followed by bioinformatic analysis (PXD024937 identifier in ProteomeXchange repository). A total of 108 up-regulated proteins were enriched in stress-related proteins, half of which were also

[Are there predictors for sexual risk behavior in HIV-infected patients?].

The influence of four coping strategies ("rumination," "search for affiliation," "threat minimization," and "search for information"), four social network dimensions ("affectively positive," "affectively negative," "accepting confidants," and "liking confidants") and sociodemographics on the sexual risk behavior of HIV-infected persons were analyzed in sexual encounters with steady and casual partners. The analysis examines bi- and multivariately the predictors for sexual risk behavior. The study population consisted of 103 asymptomatic HIV-infected persons (80 men, 23 women, mean age 34 years

Lesion mapping of social problem solving.

Accumulating neuroscience evidence indicates that human intelligence is supported by a distributed network of frontal and parietal regions that enable complex, goal-directed behaviour. However, the contributions of this network to social aspects of intellectual function remain to be well characterized. Here, we report a human lesion study (n = 144) that investigates the neural bases of social problem solving (measured by the Everyday Problem Solving Inventory) and examine the degree to which individual differences in performance are predicted by a broad spectrum of psychological variables, inc

Abnormal functional connectivity of the reward network is associated with social communication impairments in autism spectrum disorder: A large-scale multi-site resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: The social motivation hypothesis proposes that the social deficits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are related to reward system dysfunction. However, functional connectivity (FC) patterns of the reward network in ASD have not been systematically explored yet. METHODS: The reward network was defined as eight regions of interest (ROIs) per hemisphere, including the nucleus accumbens (NAc), caudate, putamen, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC), orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), amygdala, and insula. We computed both the ROI-wise resting-state FC and se
