A cross sectional study on determinants of quality of life in ALS.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the determinants of quality of life (QoL) in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has become increasingly important with the recent emphasis on the comprehensive management of patients. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the determinants of QoL in ALS using two scales with different theoretical constructs: the Schedule for the Evaluation of QoL-Direct Weighting (SEIQoL-DW), which evaluates subjective aspects of QoL, and the McGill QoL Questionnaire (MQOL), which evaluates both health related and non-health related factors of QoL. METHODS: Eighty consecutive patients with ALS und

The influence of socio-economic status on the severity of sickle cell disease.

The influence of socio-economic status on morbidity was studied in 122 unselected consecutive patients with homozygous sickle cell disease in steady state. They included 65 females and 57 males, divided into three social classes (I, II and III, from highest to lowest). The morbidity indices used were, frequency of bone pain crisis, leg ulceration, growth index and the degree of anaemia as denoted by the mean steady haemoglobin level. It was found that the frequency of bone pain crisis was significantly higher in social class III patients than in social class I and social class II (P < 0.01). L

Area-based measures of socioeconomic status in studies assessing health outcomes among people living with HIV in Canada and the USA: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Area-based measures of socioeconomic status (SES) are increasingly used to study health disparities among people living with HIV (PLWH), with wide variation in how they are defined and applied across studies and settings. This study synthesises the types of area-based measures of SES used in Canada and the USA, the domains captured and their associations with health outcomes among PLWH. METHODS: A scoping review of studies published in English between 2012 and 2025 was conducted using PubMed and Web of Science. The search combined 'HIV' with terms related to area-based SES measures

Do socioeconomic health gradients persist over time and beyond income? A distributional analysis using UK biomarker data.

This paper analyses the relationship between health and socioeconomic disadvantage by adopting a dynamic approach accounting for spatial and temporal changes across ten domains including social isolation, environment, financial hardship and security. As a first step we develop a measure of overall multidimensional deprivation and undertake a decomposition analysis to explore the role of breadth and duration of deprivation on shaping the deprivation gradient in health. Subsequently, we employ unconditional quantile regression to conduct a distributional analysis of the gradient to understand ho

Who knows about U = U? Social positionality and knowledge about the (un)transmissibility of HIV from people with undetectable viral loads.

"U = U" is the principle that HIV is untransmittable from people living with an undetectable HIV viral-load. Wide-spread knowledge about U = U is believed to produce public health benefit by reducing HIV-related stigma - promoting wellbeing for people living with HIV. Therefore, we examined the diffusion of U = U with respect to the social position of sexual and gender minority men (SGMM). Participants were SGMM recruited from 16 LGBTQ2S+ pride festivals across Canada. Social position was measured using an index assessing whether participants were (a) trans, (b) a person of colour, (c) Indigen

Health and Social-Physical Environment Profiles Among Older Adults Living Alone: Associations With Depressive Symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: We examined differences in depressive symptoms among people 65 and older who live alone, exploring whether these differences are associated with both health and environmental contexts. METHOD: Data are from the 2006 wave of Health Retirement Study (N = 2,956, age range: 65-104). We used a two-step cluster analytical approach to identify subgroups of health-limitation profiles and environmental profiles. Logistic regression models determined associations between subgroups and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Cluster analysis identified four health-profile subgroups (sensory-cognitive

Dimensions of religiosity in old age: accounting for variation in types of participation.

Research on religiosity and aging has focused more on church attendance than on the religious role and the strength of beliefs and the extent of private devotions. This study of 123 older West Texans examines the degree to which nine variables account for variation in both organized religious activities and private religious behavior. These include three social activity and interaction variables, three religion variables, and three personal variables (health, age, and income). Strength of religious conviction proved to be the strongest predictor of both types of religious participation. Multip

Social and physical predictors of mental health impact in adult women who have an FMR1 premutation.

PURPOSE: Clear understanding of mental health phenotypes and associated socioeconomic, physical health and well-being impacts in adult women with an FMR1 premutation (PM) is needed for counseling and primary healthcare. METHODS: A questionnaire captured mental health conditions in women with a PM, using lifetime diagnosis and nested psychometric scales (Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale; Depression and Anxiety Stress Scale). Socioeconomic, physical health and well-being data were entered into 2 multivariable logistic regression models (1 with depression status as the outcome variable and 1 with

The Association of Social Support and Symptomatic Remission among Community-Dwelling Schizophrenia Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Schizophrenia is a mental disease that often leads to chronicity. Social support could reduce the severity of psychotic symptoms; therefore, its influence on remission should be examined. This study investigated the remission rates in community-dwelling schizophrenia patients and examined the association between social support and remission status. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 129 schizophrenia patients in Taiwan. Remission rates were evaluated, and the level of social support, clinical characteristics, sociodemographic variables, and healthy lifestyle status were compared between

Examining the longitudinal associations between activity limitations, instrumental supports and social participation in osteoarthritis: A CLSA population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: In osteoarthritis (OA) research, disability is largely studied within the context of activities of daily living. Broader consequences for social participation are often overlooked. In prior work, instrumental supports received and their perceived availability were shown to play a role in the maintenance of social participation. Two indicators of social participation were identified, diversity and intensity. The current study extends the findings from this prior cross-sectional work by examining these relationships longitudinally. METHODS: Data are from the baseline and 3-year follo

The Relationship Between Social Support, HIV Serostatus, and Perceived Likelihood of Being HIV Positive Among Self-Settled Female, Foreign Migrants in Cape Town, South Africa.

Female cross-border migrants experience elevated risks for HIV, and migrants in South Africa may face additional risks due to the country's underlying HIV prevalence. These risks may be mitigated by the receipt of social support. A behavioral risk-factor survey was administered using respondent-driven sampling. Multivariable regression models assessed the relationships between social support and two HIV outcomes: HIV serostatus and perceived HIV status. Low social support was not significantly associated with HIV status (aOR = 1.03, 95 % CI 0.43-2.46), but was significantly related to a percep

Socioeconomic status and chronic stress. Does stress account for SES effects on health?

Socioeconomic status (SES) is an important predictor of a range of health and illness outcomes. Research seeking to identify the extent to which this often-reported effect is due to protective benefits of higher SES or to toxic elements of lower social status has not yielded consistent or conclusive findings. A relatively novel hypothesis is that these effects are due to chronic stress that is associated with SES; lower SES is reliably associated with a number of important social and environmental conditions that contribute to chronic stress burden, including crowding, crime, noise pollution, …

Mass incarceration and its spillover effects: a scoping review of incarceration rates and health.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that mass incarceration has had negative population health effects not only through those directly impacted, but through "spillover" onto families and more broadly. We scope the literature to synthesize findings across disciplines and health outcomes. METHODS: We searched 10 medical databases for quantitative studies published from January 01, 1990 to 04/24/2024 examining the association between incarceration rates and outcomes of physical health, mental health, or social determinants of health. We grouped findings by health outcome and differentiated by geographi

Pandemics and socio-economic status. Evidence from the plague of 1630 in northern Italy.

This paper investigates the biological, socio-economic, and institutional factors shaping the individual risk of death during a major pre-industrial epidemic. We use a micro-demographic database for an Italian city (Carmagnola) during the 1630 plague to explore in detail the survival dynamics of the population admitted to the isolation hospital (lazzaretto). We develop a theoretical model of admissions to the lazzaretto, for better interpretation of the observational data. We explore how age and sex shaped the individual risk of death, and we provide a one-of-a-kind study of the impact of soci
