Insights from a laboratory and naturalistic investigation on stress, rumination and frontal brain functioning in MDD: An fNIRS study.

Recent research has emphasized rumination as an important maintaining factor in various mental disorders. However, operationalization and therefore induction of rumination in experimental settings poses a major challenge in terms of ecological validity. As stress seems to play a key role in everyday situations eliciting rumination, we conducted two stress paradigms while assessing behavioral and neurophysiological measures. Aiming to replicate previous findings on induced rumination by means of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and comparing them to physiological (pain) stress, a clinical sa

Visual search attentional bias modification reduced social phobia in adolescents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: An attentional bias for negative information plays an important role in the development and maintenance of (social) anxiety and depression, which are highly prevalent in adolescence. Attention Bias Modification (ABM) might be an interesting tool in the prevention of emotional disorders. The current study investigated whether visual search ABM might affect attentional bias and emotional functioning in adolescents. METHODS: A visual search task was used as a training paradigm; participants (n = 16 adolescents, aged 13-16) had to repeatedly identify the only smiling fa

Psychosocial Care of Pregnancy Loss in the Emergency Department.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency departments in the United States manage nearly 900,000 visits annually for early pregnancy loss. Patients frequently report limited emotional support, inadequate provider knowledge, and insufficient communication. METHODS: A pre- and postintervention design was used to assess ED staff knowledge, attitudes, and supportive care skills related to reproductive grief. Demographic data were collected. Paired t tests evaluated changes across 7 educational domains. RESULTS: The analytic sample (N = 39) consisted of chaplains (7.7%), nurses (61.6%), patient care assistants (7.

Validation of the SPF-Q, an instrument to assess the quality of production functions to achieve well-being, among multimorbid patients.

BACKGROUND: In a time of ageing populations, examination of the ability of multimorbid patients to achieve well-being has become increasingly important. Social production function theory is used to characterise people's ability to achieve well-being. Whereas much research has examined the fulfilment of substantive needs, far less research has investigated the quality of production functions (being in control, avoiding a loss frame, and efficiency) to achieve well-being. Therefore, this study involved the development and validation of the Social Production Function-Quality of production functio

Alcohol and anxiety: subtle and obvious attributes of abuse in adults with social anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Previous research has found a relation between social anxiety disorder and alcoholism but recent work found no differences in drinking levels among socially anxious individuals, dysthymics, and normal controls. Using a more sophisticated measure of substance abuse may further explicate the relation between social anxiety and drinking. We examined aspects of substance abuse in treatment-seeking individuals with social anxiety disorder or panic disorder (psychiatric control group) as well as nondisordered individuals (normal control group). We used the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-

Content validation of the Tilburg Frailty Indicator from the perspective of frail elderly. A qualitative explorative study.

UNLABELLED: The Tilburg Frailty Indicator is a questionnaire with a bio-psycho-social approach, which measures frailty by 15 questions. A questionnaire about frailty should be in alignment with experiences of frail elderly themselves as a target population is an important source of knowledge in content validation. AIM: To validate the Tilburg Frailty Indicator on content in relation to the physical, psychological and social domain by exploring the experience of daily life of community dwelling frail elderly. METHODS: The design was a qualitative content validation study. The participants wer

Joint attention training for children with autism using behavior modification procedures.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in joint attention are considered by many researchers to be an early predictor of childhood autism (e.g., Osterling & Dawson, 1994) and are considered to be pivotal to deficits in language, play, and social development in this population (Mundy, 1995). Although many researchers have noted the importance of joint attention deficits in the development of children with autism (e.g., Mundy, Sigman, & Kasari, 1994) and have called for intervention strategies (e.g., Mundy & Crowson, 1997), few studies have attempted to target joint attention. In this study, joint attention behav

Analysis of the neural mechanisms of social anxiety based on EEG features and machine learning and construction of a diagnostic model.

Social anxiety is a common psychological problem, and its accurate diagnosis and investigation of underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are of significant importance. This study aims to explore the neuroelectrophysiological characteristics and diagnostic value of social anxiety by integrating event-related potentials (ERP), event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP), and machine learning methods. A total of 128 participants with varying levels of social anxiety completed an emotional face Go/No-Go task, during which electroencephalographic (EEG) data were collected for ERP and time-frequenc

Psychometric properties of the Ambivalence towards Men Inventory and the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory in a university sample from Bolivia.

BACKGROUND: Ambivalent sexism refers to the coexistence of both hostile and benevolent attitudes towards men and women. The present study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the abbreviated versions of the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI) and the Ambivalence towards Men Inventory (AMI), thereby providing more parsimonious tools for research in social psychology. METHOD: The sample comprised 2216 volunteer students (53.1% women and 46.9% men) who had been in a romantic relationship within the past twelve months. Participants completed the Likert-type scales, and the data were ana

Virtual reality applications for diagnosis, risk assessment and therapy of child abusers.

Despite the successful application of virtual reality (VR) in a wide variety of mental disorders and the obvious potentials that VR provides, the use of VR in the context of criminology and forensic psychology is sparse. For forensic mental health professionals, VR provides some advantages that outrun general advantages of VR, e.g., ecological validity and controllability of social situations. Most important seems to be the unique possibility to expose offenders and to train coping skills in virtual situations, which are able to elicit disorder-relevant behavior-without endangering others. VR

Practical Treatments Considering the Role of Sociocultural Factors on Problem Gambling.

Reviews of problem gambling (PG) literature increasingly recognize the ways in which different ethnic groups are affected by gambling behaviors, yet discourse, which considers sociocultural factors within PG, remains limited. Literature on this topic is influenced by large inconsistencies amongst research studies, overlapping terminology, and variability in the validity of research studies, making conclusions difficult to draw. Despite these discrepancies, this paper explores how sociocultural factors influence PG among diverse cultural groups and provides specific practical implications for t

The Irritability Questionnaire: a new scale for the measurement of irritability.

Irritability is an important symptom in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. It is a major source of distress to patients and their carers and can lead to social and family dysfunction. Despite this, there has been little systematic research on irritability in psychiatry. The development of an instrument that captures the various components of irritability is a prerequisite to more detailed research in this area. The aim of this study was to design a scale to measure irritable mood and to explore its nature and subtypes. Following a review of the literature and examination of current theo

The self-report of punitive childhood experiences of young adults and adolescents.

A questionnaire designed to assess childhood disciplinary experiences was administered to a large sample of university students. The responses of these subjects indicated many of these predominantly middle-class young adults had experienced disciplinary activities that could be considered abusive. The results provide prevalence data on child abuse histories in a nonclinical sample and were seen as supporting the idea that physical abuse of children is widespread and not restricted to groups identified on the basis of clinical service or social deviance. Regardless of the criterion for physical

Social Safety Questionnaire: Development and Validation of a Psychometric Scale Assessing Social Safety and Social Threat.

Social Safety Theory posits that perceptions of social safety and social threat shape human health and behavior, yet no instrument exists for assessing these constructs. To address this gap, we developed and validated the 20-item Social Safety Questionnaire (SSQ) in a community sample of 503 adults (preregistration: osf.io/qaeh3). Four factors were identified: social rejection, social support, social acceptance, and interpersonal trust. As expected, social safety positively related to perceived social support (r=.75) and social safeness (r=.81), and negatively to loneliness (r=-.53), psycholog

Validation of a theoretically motivated approach to measuring childhood socioeconomic circumstances in the Health and Retirement Study.

Childhood socioeconomic status (cSES) is a powerful predictor of adult health, but its operationalization and measurement varies across studies. Using Health and Retirement Study data (HRS, which is nationally representative of community-residing United States adults aged 50+ years), we specified theoretically-motivated cSES measures, evaluated their reliability and validity, and compared their performance to other cSES indices. HRS respondent data (N = 31,169, interviewed 1992-2010) were used to construct a cSES index reflecting childhood social capital (cSC), childhood financial capital (cFC

Active bystandership by youth in the digital era: Microintervention strategies for responding to social media-based microaggressions and cyberbullying.

Microaggressions are intentional or unintentional slights, insults, invalidations, and offensive behaviors that communicate hostile or derogatory messages to minoritized populations. When microaggressions cross over to social media, they can be considered a form of cyberbullying, which occurs over digital devices and harms, threatens, undermines, or socially excludes others. Microaggressions and cyberbullying have adverse mental health outcomes for racial and cultural minority youth, and there is an urgent need for practical strategies youth can use online to interrupt and disarm negative and
