Three-Dimensional Evaluation of Soft Tissue Changes after Functional Therapy.

This study was aimed at proposing a three-dimensional (3D) evaluation method for the soft tissue effects of Twin Block (TB) functional appliance therapy by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. In this retrospective study, a total of 60 pre- and posttreatment (T0 and T1) CBCT images of Class II patients with mandibular retrognathia treated with a TB appliance were used. Volumetric and linear soft tissue changes were evaluated quantitatively with 3D measurements and qualitatively with color mapping visual. Linear (NV-A and NV-Pog) and angular (SNA, SNB, and ANB) skeletal changes we

Prediction of the development of late enophthalmos in pure blowout fractures: delayed orbital tissue atrophy plays a major role.

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the risk factors for the development of late enophthalmos in pure blowout fractures. METHODS: We reviewed 49 cases of pure blowout fractures diagnosed in Ajou University Hospital, South Korea, from January 2005 to June 2015. We assumed that several factors influence the development of late enophthalmos, including bony defect size, volume of displaced soft tissue, number of fracture sites, involvement of floor, soft tissue incarceration through the bony defect, and patient age. RESULTS: Twenty-one patients were diagnosed with late enophthalmos (group 1) wh

An auxetic insole design with reverse graded-stiffness to relieve detrimental tissue stresses under bony prominence of calcaneus in diabetic foot.

To effectively mitigate detrimental tissue stresses of the diabetic foot for preventing ulceration, contemporary strategies frequently utilize pressure-relief insoles. In this study, we have developed an innovative enhanced pressure-relief insole that integrate auxetic structures with a reverse graded-stiffness property. We introduce a novel modification to the insole internal structure, exhibiting untraditional regional stiffness from the center to the periphery. We utilize a validated finite element (FE) heel model of a diabetic patient to evaluate the effectiveness of the insole, computing

A methodology to modify land uses in a transit oriented development scenario.

Developing nations are adopting transit oriented development (TOD) strategies to decongest their transportation systems. These strategies are often adopted after the preparation of land use plans. The goal of this study was to build a methodology to modify these land uses using soft computing. This can help to achieve alternate land use plans relevant to TOD. The methodology incorporates TOD characteristics and objectives. Global TOD parameters (density, diversity, and distance to transit) were studied. Expert opinions gave weights and ranges for the parameters in an Indian TOD scenario. Rules…

Abnormal variations in the facial soft tissues of adult uremic patients on chronic dialysis.

Renal osteodystrophy is a common complication of uremic patients, mainly when they are in long-term regular dialysis treatment. The craniofacial skeleton is one of the peculiar targets of renal osteodystrophy, the more dramatic pattern of which is a form of leontiasis. To assess facial deformities in uremic conditions and to understand the possible relation with hyperparathyroidism, the three-dimensional coordinates of 50 soft tissue facial landmarks were obtained by an electromagnetic digitizer in 10 male and 10 female patients (aged 53-81 years) with chronic renal insufficiency and regular d

Analysis of soft tissue tumors by an attributed minimum spanning tree.

Histologic slides of 22 soft tissue tumors (9 malignant fibrous histiocytoma, 8 fibrosarcoma, 2 rhabdomyosarcoma, 2 osteosarcoma, 1 Askin tumor) were Feulgen stained. Using an automated image analyzing system (Cambridge 570) at low magnification (25x), the tumor cell nuclei were segmented. The geometrical center of the nuclei was considered the vertex. A basic graph was constructed according to the neighborhood condition of O'Callaghan. Neighboring tumor cell nuclei were visualized by connecting edges. Several features of tumor cell nuclei were measured, including area, surface, major and mino

[Pilon fractures. Part 1: Diagnostics, treatment strategies and approaches].

Intraarticular fractures of the distal tibia (pilon fractures) are caused by axial forces, usually in combination with torsional moments. Routine diagnostics include plain films and three dimensional (3D) imaging with computed tomography (CT). Treatment is often impaired by complex fracture configurations and thin soft tissue layers. The management of complex pilon fractures with soft tissue injuries has seen many trends, with changes toward staged protocols of temporary external fixation followed by delayed open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), minimally invasive percutaneous plate ost

Force interactions in laparoscopic simulations: haptic rendering of soft tissues.

Research in the area of computer assisted surgery and surgical simulation has mainly focused on developing 3D geometrical models of the human body from 2D medical images, visualization of internal structures for educational and preoperative surgical planning purposes, and graphical display of soft tissue behavior in real time. Conveying to the surgeon the touch and force sensations with the use of haptic interfaces has not been investigated in detail. We have developed a set of haptic rendering algorithms for simulating "surgical instrument--soft tissue" interactions. Although the focus of the

[Acute management of pilon fractures].

Pilon fractures are complex injuries involving the weight-bearing articular surface of the distal tibia and are frequently associated with relevant soft tissue damage. The treatment requires a structured strategy in which the condition of the soft tissues plays a central role. These fractures result either from low-energy rotational injuries or high-energy axial compression trauma. While the former typically occur in older patients and are associated with limited soft tissue injury, the latter often lead to complex fracture patterns with severe articular impaction and metaphyseal comminution.

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Soft and Hard Tissue Changes following Orthognathic Surgery.

Change in soft tissue in relation to that in hard tissue following orthognathic surgery was evaluated. Twenty-five patients were enrolled in the study. The diagnosis in all was jaw deformity (maxillary retrusion and mandibular protrusion) and all underwent a Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal splitting ramus osteotomy. Three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided design (CAD) models (polygon models) of the hard and soft tissue of the maxilla and mandible were constructed and superimposed. Reference points were established on the pre- and postoperative hard and soft tissues. Specific elements

Which Pre- and Postoperative Coronal Plane Laxity Parameters Influence Patient Satisfaction and Function after Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty?

Soft tissue balancing, while accepted as crucial to total knee arthroplasty (TKA) outcomes, is incompletely defined as the subject of broad recommendations. We analyzed 120 computer-assisted, posterior stabilized TKA undertaken for osteoarthritis. Coronal plane laxity was measured, in the 91 varus and 29 valgus knees, prior to any bone resection or soft tissue release, and again after implant insertion. Soft tissue laxity parameters were correlated to the American Knee Society Score (2011) at a minimum follow-up of 12 months with a focus on patient function and satisfaction. Thirteen specific

Craniofacial bone atrophy in Parry Romberg syndrome demonstrated using a Bayesian hierarchical model.

PURPOSE: Parry Romberg syndrome (PRS) is a condition characterized by progressive hemifacial atrophy, predominantly affecting the soft tissues. Associated bone retraction is a common clinical feature of PRS but has never been assessed. Here we used 3D imaging and Bayesian statistics in order to demonstrate and quantify bone atrophy in PRS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten non-operated patients with PRS (4/10 males) and 12 age-matched controls (7/12 males) were included into the study. The average age at CT-scan was 9.67 ± 4.13 years for PRS patients and 12.5 ± 4.37 years for controls. Soft and hard

Three-dimensional region-based study on the relationship between soft and hard tissue changes after orthognathic surgery in patients with prognathism.

Both deep understanding and reliable prediction of postoperative soft tissue changes are crucial for planning orthognathic surgery. Instead of estimating soft tissue responses by measuring individual landmark changes, this study aimed to investigate the relationship (ratio) between soft and hard tissue movements in different facial regions through three-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Preoperative and postoperative CBCT images were superimposed using the surface registration method on the basis of the cranial base, and 10 facial regions of interest were defined. Region-based
