An integrated view of the chemistry and mineralogy of martian soils.

The mineralogical and elemental compositions of the martian soil are indicators of chemical and physical weathering processes. Using data from the Mars Exploration Rovers, we show that bright dust deposits on opposite sides of the planet are part of a global unit and not dominated by the composition of local rocks. Dark soil deposits at both sites have similar basaltic mineralogies, and could reflect either a global component or the general similarity in the compositions of the rocks from which they were derived. Increased levels of bromine are consistent with mobilization of soluble salts by …

Methylated arsenic, antimony and tin species in soils.

Methylated species of antimony, arsenic and tin were examined in urban soils of the Ruhr basin, near the cities of Duisburg and Essen, Germany. The main aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of mono-, di- and trimethylated species of these elements in urban soils. The influence of historical and present land use upon the species content was examined. The distribution of inorganic As, Sb and Sn and their methylated species along the profile depth was investigated. As, Sb and Sn speciation was performed by pH-gradient hydride generation purge and trap gas chromatography, followed b…

The influence of organic ligands on the retention of lead in soil.

Organic acids are commonly produced and exuded by plant roots and soil microorganisms. Some of these organic compounds are effective chelating agents and have the potential to enhance metal mobility. The effect of citrate and salicylate on the leaching of lead in soil was investigated in a laboratory experiment. In short-term batch experiments, adsorption of lead to soil was slightly enhanced with increasing salicylate concentration (500-5000 microM) but decreased significantly in the presence of citrate. These observations suggested that citrate may enhance Pb leaching, but this was not obser…

Influence of extraction parameters on the mutagenicity of soil samples.

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of four extraction parameters (type of solvent, temperature, duration of extraction, and soil mass/solvent volume ratio) on the mutagenicity of soil extracts. Four urban soil samples were submitted to the micro-method adaptation of the Ames test on Salmonella typhimurium according to the following sequence: identification of the most sensitive strain (TA98 or TA100), the best solvent(s), the optimum extraction temperature and extraction time, and finally the optimal soil/solvent ratio. Extraction was thus performed using eight different so…

The influence of soil remediation on lead in house dust.

Lead in house dust has long been recognized as a principal source of excess lead absorption among children at the Bunker Hill Superfund Site … smelter closure, 1983 mean dust lead concentrations were near 3000 mg/kg and were most dependent on soil sources. Following emergency soil removals from public areas and roadsides and fugitive dust control efforts in the mid-1980s, house dust lead decreased by approximately 40-60% to 1200-1500 mg/kg. In 1992, a cleanup goal of 500 mg/kg dust lead commu …

Chromium-microorganism interactions in soils: remediation implications.

Discharge of Cr waste from many industrial applications such as leather tanning, textile production, electroplating, metallurgy, and petrole … tron donors, to become precipitated as hydroxides. Cr(VI)-reducing microorganisms are ubiquitous in soil and water. A wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, yeasts; and algae, with exceptional ability to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) anaerobically and/or aerobically, have been isolated from Cr-contaminated and noncontaminated soils and water. Bio …

Environmental fate of methyl bromide as a soil fumigant.

The great variation among results of recent experiments measuring the total emission of MeBr from fields implies that many factors influence MeBr transport and transformation in the soil-water-air system and its ultimate loss from the soil surface. It has been demonstrated that variables related to application methods (e.g., injection depth, use and type of surface tarp), soil properties (e.g., water content, bulk density, soil organic matter), and climatic conditions (e.g.. air temperature, wind speed, barometric pressure) have pronounced effects on MeBr volatilization following soil injectio…

Soil contamination with geohelminth ova in a tea plantation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the degree of soil pollution in an area of high prevalence and the risk of exposure to geohelminth infection. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: A division of a large tea plantation in Kandy. SUBJECTS: All persons resident in one division of the tea plantation, above the age of 1 year. MEASUREMENTS: Prevalence of geohelminth infection measured by microscopic examination of faeces of the study group. Soil samples from 38 specific locations, obtained on 3 different occasions, about 6 months apart, analysed for helminth ova. The average temperature, rainfall and…

Impact of trichloroethylene and toluene on nitrogen cycling in soil.

The effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) and toluene on soil nitrogen-cycling activities were examined. Ammonium oxidation potential (AOP) was reduced after incubation with as little as 1 microgram of TCE ml-1, and the effects were generally greater when toluene was present and increased with longer exposure. Arginine ammonification potential and denitrification enzyme activity were constant regardless of TCE concentration or the presence of toluene, while nitrite oxidation potential (NOP) exhibited variable sensitivity. KCl-extractable ammonium levels increased dramatically after exposure to 30…

Indirect effects of soil and water on animal health.

Some variations in animal health among geographic areas are associated with variations in soils, water supplies or soil parent materials. Geochemical bases for health problems arising from essential nutrient element deficiencies or from toxic levels or imbalances of several elements are widely recognized. Less attention has been directed to the possibilities of geochemical influences upon regional differences in health resulting from pathogens, parasites, mycotoxins and poisonous plants. This review is an effort to collect and interpret such evidence as has been published on the subject since …

SIGNIFICANCE OF SOIL SALINITY ON THE ECOLOGY OF COCCIDIOIDES IMMITIS.

Elconin, Ann F. (University of Southern California, Los Angeles), Roger O. Egeberg, and Margaret C. Egeberg. Significance of soil salinity on the ecology of Coccidioides immitis. J. Bacteriol. 87:500-503. 1964.-An 8-year study of the soil in a small parcel of land where coccidioidomycosis is endemic was conducted. Over 5,000 samples collected from the surface of the soil at monthly intervals were tested for the presence of Coccidioides immitis. These samples were also analyzed to determine their major chemical composition. During the first 3 years, C. immitis was recovered in profusion from th…
