Observing touch is known to activate regions of the somatosensory cortex but the interpretation of this finding is controversial (e.g. does it reflect the simulated action of touching or the simulated reception of touch?). For most people, observing touch is not linked to reported experiences of feeling touch but in some people it is (mirror-touch synaesthetes). We conducted an fMRI study in which participants (mirror-touch synaesthetes, controls) watched movies of stimuli (face, dummy, object) being touched or approached. In addition we examined whether mirror touch synaesthesia is associated…

Previous studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and event-related potentials (ERPs) of the brain have found that a distributed parietal-frontal neuronal network is activated in normals during both auditory and visual oddball tasks. The common cortical regions in this network are inferior parietal lobule (IPL)/supramarginal gyrus (SMG), anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). It is not clear whether the same network is activated by oddball tasks during somatosensory stimulation. The present study addressed this question by testing healthy

Recent neuroscience research has shed light on heart-brain interactions during diverse information processes across perception, affective, and cognitive domains. It remains unclear how the heartbeat-related interoceptive pathway affects the neural responses of somatosensory information processing. In this study, we combined EEG, ECG, and DTI to examine the effect of heart-brain interaction on cortical somatosensory processing and investigated both the cardiac phase and heart rate effects on somatosensory-evoked high-frequency oscillations (HFOs). First, we examined the somatosensory cortex act…

Previous human and rodent studies indicated that nociceptive stimuli activate many brain regions that is involved in the somatosensory and emotional sensation. Although these studies have identified several important brain regions involved in pain perception, it has been a challenge to observe neural activity directly and simultaneously in these multiple brain regions during pain perception. Using a transgenic mouse expressing G-CaMP7 in majority of astrocytes and a subpopulation of excitatory neurons, we recorded the brain activity in the mouse cerebral cortex during acute pain stimulation. Immunohistochemical staining was used to investigate the expression pattern of SEIPIN in the mouse central nervous system. SEIPIN was found to be present in a large number of areas, including the motor and somatosensory cortex, the thalamic nuclei, the hypothalamic nuclei, the mesencephalic nuclei, some cranial motor nuclei, the reticular formation of the brainstem, and the vestibular complex. Double labeling with NeuN antibody confirmed that SEIPIN-positive cells in some nuclei were neurons. Retrograde tracer injections into the spinal cord revealed that SEIPIN-positive neurons in the motor a…

Rett syndrome is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder, with hand stereotypies as a hallmark of the disease. Epilepsy is a frequent comorbidi … a stereotypy variant. The phenomenon could be caused by abnormal circuitry among the hyperexcitable somatosensory cortex, motor cortex, and subcortical areas in Rett syndrome. Clinicians should be aware of the nonepileptic nature of this motor behavior and should not attempt to treat it.

Normal breathing is usually not sensed by the individual. Individuals become aware of their breathing at the cognitive level when breathing pattern is manipulated. Airway obstruction activates lung and muscle mechanoreceptors that project to the somatosensory cortex. Cortical neuronal activation in the somatosensory cortex by inspiratory occlusions can be measured by scalp surface electrodes in humans. The averaged signal was defined as the respiratory related evoked potential (RREP). Six RREP peaks, Nf, P1, N1, P2, N2 and P300 have been studied in the averaged EEG trace. Voluntary attention, …

Xenomelia is the oppressive feeling that one or more limbs of one's body do not belong to one's self. We present the results of a thorough e … ed individuals evinced a larger cortical surface area in the inferior parietal lobule and secondary somatosensory cortex. Although of modest size, these structural correlates of xenomelia appear meaningful when discussed against the background of some key clinical features of the disorder. Thus, the predominantly right-sided cortical abnormalities are in line with a s …

The transcranial evoked potential (TEP) is a powerful technique to investigate brain dynamics, but some methodological issues limit its inte … , reflecting a saliency-related multimodal response, rather than specific activation of the primary somatosensory cortex. Strategies to minimize or remove these responses by EEG processing still yield uncertain results; therefore, data inspection is of paramount importance to judge a possible contamination of the TEP by multimodal potentials caused by somatosensory in …

Motor imagery (MI) relies on conscious mental simulation of a motor act without overt motor output and can promote motor skill acquisition and facilitate rehabilitation for patients with stroke or neurological conditions. Although a plethora of neuroimaging studies have investigated the neural network of MI regarding different body parts, exploration of the neural correlates to facial MI remains warranted. Here, we used functional MRI with a large cohort of 41 participants who underwent motor execution (ME) and MI runs of mouth-stretching tasks. Then, we carried out conjunction and contrast an

Dietary thiamine deficiency, enhanced by pyrithiamine administration in adult rats, produces overt lesions in the brain that are especially prominent in the thalamus. The present study was undertaken to determine whether the thalamic lesions could be correlated with alterations in the physiological properties of neurons in the thalamus and somatosensory cortex. The regimen for experimentally inducing thiamine deficiency produced large lesions in the thalamus of every case; the lesions included most, if not all, of the neurons in the intralaminar thalamic nuclei. The extent of the lesion in the…

EEG and brain mapping (on basal conditions and after i.v. administration of diazepam) and visual, somatosensory and auditory evoked potentials have been performed on a patient at terminal evolution of CJD. These combined neurophysiologic studies indicated that very important functional impairments of either thalamic-frontal circuits and frontal, parietal and occipital cortex were associated with absent or mild dysfunction of the visual, somatosensory and auditory subcortical pathways. Combined neurophysiologic studies are important to better understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms of neurod

Current models of mental body representations (MBRs) indicate that tactile inputs feed some of them for different functions, implying that altering tactile inputs may affect mental body representations differently. Here, we tested this hypothesis by leveraging repetitive somatosensory stimulation (RSS), known to improve tactile perception by modulating primary somatosensory cortex (SI) activity, and measured its effects over the body image, body model and superficial schema in a randomized sham-controlled, double-blind crossover study. Results show that repetitive somatosensory stimulation aff…

Neonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is the most important cause of brain injury in the newborn. Here we studied structural alterations and functional perturbations of developing large-scale sensorimotor cortical networks in a rat model of moderate HI at postnatal day 3 (P3). At the morphological level, HI led to a disorganized barrel pattern in the somatosensory cortex without detectable histological changes in the motor cortex. Functional effects were addressed by means of epicranial mapping of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) during the postischemic recovery period. At P10, SEPs were immatu…

A multislice EPI sequence was used to obtain functional MR images of the entire rat brain with BOLD contrast at 11.7 T. Ten to 11 slices covering the rat brain, with an in-plane resolution of 300 microm, provided enough sensitivity to detect activation in brain regions known to be involved in the somatosensory pathway during stimulation of the forelimbs. These regions were identified by warping a digitized rat brain atlas to each set of images. Data analysis was constrained to four major areas of the somatosensory pathway: primary and secondary somatosensory cortices, thalamus, and cerebellum.

The relative numbers and locations of neurons projecting to the "forelimb" region of the precentral motor cortex were studied in three monke … he tracer labels thalamocortical cells, which are targets of pallidal output also. Within the first somatosensory cortex, cytoarchitectonic areas 1, 2, and 3a project to area 4. The projection from area 3a may provide one pathway by which short-latency peripheral inputs, especially from muscles, reach the motor cortex.
