Purpose This study examines the utility of Video-Implemented Script Training for Aphasia (VISTA) for improving speech production and fluency in a Spanish-English bilingual speaker with aphasia. Method In this single-subject, multiple-baseline intervention study, VISTA was utilized to facilitate fluent and intelligible speech through training with an audiovisual speech model. Scripts were developed from personalized topics of interest, and training stimuli were tailored for speech rate and linguistic complexity. One trained script per language contained a high proportion of cognates in order to

The simple up-down adaptive procedure is a common method for measuring speech reception thresholds. It is used by the Dutch speech-in-noise telephone screening test [National Hearing test; Smits and Houtgast Ear Hear. 26, 89-95 (2005)]. The test uses digit triplets to measure the speech reception threshold in noise by telephone (SRTT(n)). About 66 000 people took this test within four months of its introduction and details were stored of all individual measurements. Analyses of this large volume of data have revealed that the standard deviation of SRTT(n) estimates increases with hearing loss.

We aimed to evaluate velopharyngeal function and speech outcomes of Sommerlad palatoplasty combined with sphincter pharyngoplasty in surgical repair of cleft palate in patients over five years old. Fifty-eight patients were reviewed between the years 2013 and 2017, 31 of whom were treated with Sommerlad palatoplasty combined with sphincter pharyngoplasty, (mean age 15 (range 9 - 22) years), and 27 were treated with Sommerlad palatoplasty alone (mean age 18 (range 10-25) years). Velopharyngeal function was evaluated by radiographic lateral cephalometry and nasoendoscopy. Hypernasality, nasal em

PURPOSE: This study examined the impact of clear speech on perceived naturalness. We compared habitual speech (HS), untrained clear speech (UCS), and clear speech after a brief training (trained clear speech [TCS]) and examined whether acoustic variables differed between conditions and predicted naturalness.
METHOD: Twelve adult female talkers read sentences in three conditions (HS, UCS, TCS). Twenty-eight normal-hearing adults rated naturalness on a 1-9 scale. Along with naturalness, acoustic measures of speech rate, number of pauses, and pause duration were obtained and compared between spe

PURPOSE: This study investigated the intelligibility and processing characteristics of Mandarin sentences synthesized based on a large-scale language model (LLM), compared to natural speech, specifically for deaf adults with cochlear implants (CIs).
METHOD: Fifty participants, 25 Mandarin-speaking deaf adults with CIs and 25 Mandarin-speaking adults with normal hearing (NH), were enrolled in the study. Sentence recognition rates and reaction times were measured using sentences from the Mandarin speech perception database presented as six different speech types. These included original natural

Background The best timing of closure of the hard palate in individuals with cleft lip, alveolus, and palate (CLAP) to reach the optimal speech outcomes and maxillary growth is still a subject of debate. This study evaluates changes in compensatory articulatory patterns and resonance in patients with unilateral and bilateral CLAP who underwent simultaneous closure of the hard palate and secondary alveolar bone grafting (ABG). Methods A retrospective study of patients with nonsyndromic unilateral and bilateral CLAP who underwent delayed hard palate closure (DHPC) simultaneously with ABG at 9

The use of electropalatography (EPG) in the teaching of new speech skills to deaf speakers, is not widely researched. Whether these skills can be maintained, or whether they can become fully automatic, without enough speech perception to enable auditory self-monitoring is therefore unclear. Most approaches to increasing speech intelligibility in deaf speakers, rightly, place an emphasis on maximizing residual hearing and listening skills. However, a small amount of evidence exists which suggests that speech production can aid speech perception. This research aimed to measure change in speech p

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is a frequent motor speech disorder following a stroke, affecting up to 42% of survivors and resulting in reduced speech intelligibility and diminished quality of life. Clinical assessments, such as the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment, Second Edition (FDA-2), rely heavily on the subjective judgment of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), which limits comparability and scalability. Telepractice solutions have the potential to extend access to care, but validated digital tools that combine automatic analysis with clinically usable interfaces remain scarce.
OBJECTIVE: This

BACKGROUND: Children with motor impairments often have the motor speech disorder dysarthria, a condition which effects the tone, strength and co-ordination of any or all of the muscles used for speech. Resulting speech difficulties can range from mild, with slightly slurred articulation and breathy voice, to profound, with an inability to produce any recognisable words. Children with dysarthria are often prescribed communication aids to supplement their natural forms of communication. However, there is variation in practice regarding the provision of therapy focusing on voice and speech produc

This is a retrospective study of 92 cleft palate patients who had been repaired with the Cronin push-back palate repair with nasal mucosal flaps. The patients were evaluated by a speech pathologist for intelligibility, articulation, and resonance and rated using a 5-point scale devised for this study. Readily intelligible speech was present in 78 percent. Normal articulation was present in 66 percent. Normal resonance was present in 78 percent of the total subject group. Secondary procedures were performed in 14 percent of the group. Repaired clefts of the soft palate achieved a high rate of n

Speech motor changes in six patients with focal unilateral upper motor neuron (UUMN) lesions were characterised using a variety of techniques including listener judgements, speech acoustic analyses, electromyographic and strength measures. Listener judgements of speech understand-ability, intelligibility and dysarthric features indicated mild dysarthria. Diadochokinesis, electromyographic and strength measures corroborated these observations. The findings of this study delineate the characteristics of the dysarthria associated with unilateral upper motor neuron lesions and have important impli

Twenty-six patients with the speech disorder of Parkinson's disease received daily speech therapy (prosodic exercises) at home for 2 to 3 weeks. There were significant improvements in speech as assessed by scores for prosodic abnormality and intelligibility' and these were maintained in part for up to 3 months. The degree of improvement was clinically and psychologically important, and relatives commented on the social benefits. The use of a visual reinforcement device produced limited benefit over and above that from prosodic exercises alone, except to patients with severe speech disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Cogan's syndrome is a rare form of vasculitis mainly affecting young subjects of whatever gender, associating cochleovestibular and ophthalmological damage. Despite medical treatment, auditory prognosis is uncertain, with 50-60% of patients showing irreversible severe to profound hearing loss, thus being candidates for cochlear implantation. Following CARE guidelines, we report 10 cases of cochlear implantation in Cogan's syndrome, with assessment of speech reception threshold and maximum intelligibility after a minimum 1 year's experience with the implant.

The aim of this study was to analyze speech intelligibility of children, who had undergone microsurgical soft palate repair according to Sommerlad. Cleft palate patients were treated by closure of the soft palate according to Sommerlad at about 6 months of age. At the age of 11, their speech was evaluated through automatic speech recognition. Word recognition rate (WR) was used as the outcome parameter of automatic speech recognition. To validate automatic speech results, an institute for speech therapy evaluated the speech samples for perceptual intelligibility. The results of this study grou

Velopharyngeal incompetence (VPI) is a contributing factor to speech disorders, frequently accompanying disorders, such as cleft palate, congenital paralysis of the soft palate, and cerebrovascular disease. For the treatment of these types of dysarthria, a Nasal Speaking Valve (NSV), which regulates nasal emission utilizing one-way valve, has been reported to be effective. As the unpleasantness while wearing the NSV was less than that with the conventional Palatal Lift Prosthesis, the NSV could be worn for a longer period of time. As NSV is inserted into the nostrils, this device could easily

Hearing-impaired people often complain about poor speech intelligibility when they are in noisy surroundings. Several authors have published data suggesting that hearing aids add distortion to the signal and thus make speech less intelligible. Given the tendency of people to speak louder in competing noise, it means that some patients might understand better in such circumstances without an aid than with an aid. The present study investigated the effect of modern commercial hearing aids on the ability of patients to understand speech monaurally in noisy circumstances. The results in general sh

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a protocol for the fabrication of a prosthesis that would improve speech in individuals who have undergone complete removal of the tongue and mandible. A 60-year-old man was suffering from severe xerostomia and was unable to produce intelligible speech. Speech analysis without the prosthesis revealed a profound articulatory disorder. With the prosthesis, xerostomia was eliminated and the subject had fewer articulatory errors of severity. Improvement in speech intelligibility was significant at p less than 0.001.
