A Qualitative Inquiry of Student, Parent, and Educator Perceptions of an Expository Intervention and Carryover.

PURPOSE: This qualitative study explored the social validity of Sketch and Speak expository strategy intervention as it occurred within a single-case experiment and supported carryover for adolescents with language learning disabilities (LLDs). METHOD: Four eighth-grade students with LLD participated in a summer intervention in which they were taught to take notes, generate oral sentences, and orally practice sentences and reports to help them recall ideas from informational texts. After intervention, the adolescents, their parents, and the speech-language pathologist (SLP) who provided the i

A non-language-specific speech test to evaluate the speech of cleft patients from different language and cultural backgrounds - A pilot study.

Cleft speech tests are not universally available. We developed a tool to fill this gap, especially in the context of a cleft mission setting. We performed a pilot study to evaluate the test's ability to differentiate between the speech of cleft patients and healthy individuals from three different language backgrounds. We used 78 made-up, nonsensical syllables to evaluate hypernasality, nasal emissions, and consonant errors. Cleft (n = 41) and non-cleft (n = 39) individuals from three countries were included in this study. Two speech and language pathologists, blinded to the examination, rated

Parent experiences of variations in service delivery of Rapid Syllable Transition (ReST) treatment for childhood apraxia of speech.

PURPOSE: To understand parents' perceptions of Rapid Syllable Transition (ReST) treatment and their experience of either telehealth or combined parent-clinician delivery of speech-language pathology. METHOD: Thematic analyses of semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 parents (5 telehealth, 5 parent-clinician) after their child completed 12 sessions of ReST treatment. RESULTS: Three themes were unique to telehealth: "telehealth was a million times easier," "technical problems weren't deal breakers," and "telehealth therapy has different boundaries." Three themes were unique to pare…

Questions of suitability: The Sustainable Development Goals.

PURPOSE: To stimulate critical thought, to challenge how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in supporting people with swallowing/communication disabilities, using a critical, political conscientisation approach. RESULT: We generate data from our professional and personal experiences interpreted through a decolonial lens to demonstrate how Eurocentric attitudes and practices are at the core of SLPs' knowledge base. We highlight risks associated with SLPs' uncritical use of human rights, the bases of the SDGs. CONCLUSION: While SDGs are useful, SLP

Systematic Physical Assistance During Intervention for People Who Use High-Tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems: The Importance of Using a Common Vocabulary.

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use prompting hierarchies to facilitate learning and monitor treatment progress. When working with people who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), SLPs typically use physical assistance to prompt motor learning. However, there is currently no standardization regarding the number of physical prompting levels or an operational definition for each prompting level. Clinicians and researchers may be working from different definitions; making treatment progress monitoring and intervention effectiveness comparisons across research studies

Documented Reasons of Cancellation and Rescheduling of Telehealth Appointments During the Pandemic.

Background and Objective:The COVID-19 pandemic increased the use of telehealth around the world. The aim is to minimize health care service disruption as well as reducing COVID-19 exposure. However, one of the major operational concerns is cancellations and rescheduling (C/Rs). C/Rs may create additional burden and cost to the patient, provider, and the health system. Our aim is to understand the reasons for C/Rs of the telehealth session after the scheduled start time.Materials and Methods:We reviewed electronic health records (EHRs) to identify the C/R reasons for behavioral health and speec

Use of Transcription when Assessing Children's Speech: Australian Speech-Language Pathologists' Practices, Challenges, and Facilitators.

OBJECTIVE: There is currently limited knowledge on the useof transcription in the management of children with speech sound disorders (SSD) by speech-language pathologists in Australia. This study explored the use of transcription, the facilitators, and challenges of transcription use, and differences in the use of detailed transcription with various client groups. Method and Participants: Eighty-four participants (speech-language pathologists working in Australia) completed an online exploratory survey which included closed and open-ended questions. RESULTS: 95% of participants reported using

Knowledge, attitudes, and practice patterns of obstructive sleep apnea among speech-language pathologists.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder characterised by repeated narrowing and closure of the upper airway during sleep. Despite growing evidence that dysphagia is a frequent sequela of OSA, the role of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in managing OSA remains unclear. The aim of this international study was to evaluate SLPs knowledge, attitudes, and experience of OSA. METHODS: A validated questionnaire, OSA Knowledge and Attitudes (OSAKA), was distributed to SLPs internationally via an online survey. Additional information on demographics,

Tracheostomy management by speech-language pathologists in Sweden.

Purpose: Speech-language pathologists' (SLPs) role in tracheostomy management is well described internationally. Surveys from Australia and the United Kingdom show high clinical consistency in SLP tracheostomy management, and that practice follows guidelines, research evidence and protocols. Swedish SLPs work with tracheostomised patients, however, the content and extent of this practice, and how it compares to international research is unknown. This study reports how SLPs in Sweden work with tracheostomised patients, investigating (a) the differences and similarities in SLPs tracheostomy mana

A dialogue among various cultures and its manifestation in stuttering therapy.

UNLABELLED: This paper presents a historical retrospective of the evolution of the clinical aspects of stuttering, and refers to social, cultural, political, and economic variables that might have exerted an influence on this evolution, particularly in relation to the authors' experience in Israel. The retrospective commences in the early decades of the 20th century, when speech and language pathology did not exist as a profession, and presents the major approaches to therapy in children and adults employed by clinicians throughout the century. We focused on the impact of the change that occur

Comparison of intelligibility measures for children with velopharyngeal insufficiency: visual analog scale ratings, interval scales, and orthographic transcription (OT)-based measures.

Regardless of the underlying cause for speech impairment in speakers with cleft palate, a universal consequence of cleft palate is reduced speech intelligibility. Still, there is no standardised approach for measuring intelligibility for speakers with cleft speech. The current study aimed to determine the relationship between orthographic transcription (OT)-based measures, interval-scale ratings, and visual analog scale (VAS) ratings for perceptual judgements of intelligibility in speakers with cleft palate as judged by speech-language pathologists (SLPs). The speaker participants were six spe

A Cochrane review of treatment for childhood apraxia of speech.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) remains heavily debated, and there is no agreement upon the etiology for the disorder. Whilst there is some consensus on the potential broad array of presenting features of children with CAS, only three key features are recognised as ubiquitous for diagnosis: 1) inconsistent error production on both consonants and vowels across repeated productions of syllables or words; 2) lengthened and impaired coarticulatory transitions between sounds and syllables; and 3) inappropriate prosody. Despite the typically severe and complex presenta

Predictors for Augmentative and Alternative Communication Clinical Service Provision: Closing the Gap.

PURPOSE: At the core of the clinical services provided by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) is upholding the human right to communicate. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) modalities support communication across environments by offering temporary or permanent solutions. Barriers to AAC service provision include translation of knowledge into clinical practice, which remains problematic despite changes to AAC preservice training addressing the knowledge barrier. This study aims to understand the importance of factors impacting the provision of AAC clinical services. METHOD: From

Reading Disabilities in Adolescents and Adults.

PURPOSE: Reading skills continue to develop into adolescence and adulthood. Difficulties in reading have lifelong repercussions. Many speech-language pathologists who work with older individuals in the school setting face significant issues, including those mandated by recent changes in legislation. Theoretical topics related to reading development and disorders include the variety of orthographic systems across languages and the ways in which adults who are literate in an alphabetic orthographic system experience changes to their spoken and written language processing. In addition, older read

Speech, cognition, and imaging studies in congenital ocular motor apraxia.

Detailed neurological, speech and language, psychological, and neuroimaging studies were carried out in eight children with the diagnosis of congenital ocular motor apraxia. The neurological examination showed clinical evidence of cerebellar vermis abnormality (hypotonia and truncal ataxia) in all cases. Neuroimaging studies suggested that the site of neuropathological disturbance of congenital ocular motor apraxia was the inferior vermis. Half of the subjects had associated speech apraxia. The most likely location of brain disturbance, which was responsible for the speech apraxia, was also an

Speech and language therapy in hyperactivity: a United Kingdom perspective in complex cases.

In the United Kingdom, multidisciplinary teams within the National Health Service (NHS) usually manage children and adolescents with disorders of hyperactivity. These multidisciplinary teams do not routinely include speech and language therapists (SLTs), and therefore speech and language therapy services for children and adolescents with disorders of hyperactivity are limited. Consequently, research and service delivery for children and adolescents with disorders of hyperactivity in the United Kingdom is only starting to emerge. Two case studies are used to show how speech and language therapy
