[Postcovid sino-orbital mucormycosis: a case report].

We describe a case of postcovid sino-orbital mucormycosis in a 74-year-old patient with diabetes mellitus. Orbital symptoms appeared after discharge from the covid hospital, in the third week of the disease and were represrnted by ptosis, proptosis, ophthalmoplegia, blindness and pain in the right eye, numbness of the right half of the face, edema of the periorbital region and cheek. The diagnosis of mucormycosis was confirmed by fluorescence microscopy of the discharge from the middle nasal meatus. SCT of the paranasal sinuses revealed pansinusitis with predominant destructive changes in the

The development of paranasal sinuses in patients with cystic fibrosis: sinuses volume analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a severe systemic disease that affects many aspects of patients' lives. It is known that the progression of the disease adversely affects lower and upper airways including the paranasal sinuses. However, its impact on sinus development in the pediatric population is not fully examined. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the development of the paranasal sinuses in a pediatric population with CF and compare it to a control group consisting of healthy children. METHODS: The results of computed tomography (CT) scans of children with the disease and the c

Ontogeny and homology of the paranasal sinuses in Platyrrhini (Mammalia: Primates).

The identity and taxonomic distribution of paranasal sinuses among living platyrrhines has remained a contentious issue (e.g., Cave [1967] Am J Phys Anthropol 26:277-288 vs. Hershkovitz [1977] Chicago: University of Chicago Press) largely because the ontogenetic data required for their detection and identification (e.g., Cave [1967]; Maier [2000] Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press, 99-132.) were not attainable without sacrificing valuable juvenile and subadult specimens. Non-invasive computed tomography (CT) scanning of ontogenetic series of skulls for 10 platyrrhine genera demonstrates

Comparison of intranasal medication delivery devices before and after functional endoscopic sinus surgery using Phacon sinus surgery models.

OBJECTIVE: Functional endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis improves sinus drainage and intranasal medication delivery. This study compares medication delivery with commonly used devices in normal and altered anatomy (post functional endoscopic sinus surgery) using sinus surgery models (Phacon). METHODS: Medication delivery was simulated via nasal drops, nasal spray and an irrigation device (Neilmed Sinus Rinse). Coverage was then calculated from endoscopic pictures taken at various anatomical sites in the normal nose and post functional endoscopic sinus surgery. RESULTS: In th

Sphenoidotomy kinetics in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps.

OBJECTIVE: Stenosed sphenoid sinus ostia are among the most common findings in revision endoscopic sinus surgery. This study sought to identify the optimal intraoperative sphenoidotomy size for prevention of postoperative stenosis. METHODS: 32 patients affected by chronic rhinosinusitis not associated with nasal polyps (CRSsNP) underwent 52 sphenoidotomies. Sphenoidotomy size was assessed using a ruler intraoperatively and at the first, third and sixth months postoperatively. Ostia sizes, SNOT-22 questionnaire findings, episodes of recurrent sinusitis and need for revision surgery were record

[Forms and factors of the variability of paranasal sinuses].

The form, structural variations, sex variations (connected with zygosityz), right and left positions of the sinuses were studied according to the data obtained while measuring the contours of the frontal, sphenoid and maxillary sinuses in the cranial roentgenograms made in the frontal and sagittal projections. By means of the twin method, relationship of the hereditary and environmental influences on the sinus formation was estimated. The data obtained in 111 Ukrainians (30--60 years of age), inhabitants of Vinnitsa region, mono- and dizygote twins of both sex were used. Greater dimensions in

Assessment of Paranasal Sinus Growth with 3D Volumetric Measurements and the Effect of Anatomic Variations on Sinus Volume in a Pediatric Population.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine paranasal sinus volumes using 3D volumetric measurements and to evaluate the effect of anatomical variations on these volumes, ensuring balanced age and sex distribution during childhood. METHODS: Thirteen age groups (0-16 years), each including 10 males and 10 females, were formed. After excluding sinus pathologies, a total of 260 subjects were randomly selected from CT head examinations. Right and left frontal, maxillary, and sphenoid sinus volumes were calculated using 3D Slicer software (version 5.6.2) following manual segmentation of axial CT slices. Als

Critical anatomical variants in preoperative computed tomography of paranasal sinuses in a tertiary care center: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Certain anatomical variants of the paranasal sinuses (PNS) predispose to injury of surrounding critical structures during functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and the occurrence of common pathologies like sinusitis. However, they are often not reported in preoperative computed tomography (CT). METHODS: The CT scan of PNS and head of 360 adults (age > 13 years) were retrospectively evaluated for variants of cribriform plate, olfactory fossa, lamina papyracea, uncinate process, sphenoid pneumatization, and anterior ethmoid artery by 4 radiologists with experience of 3 to 6 yea

Orbital involvement in sinus pathology: often without ocular pain.

Many and diverse sinus pathologies can present with an orbital involvement. Contrary to popular belief, uncomplicated rhinosinusitis causes rarely orbital pain or headaches. However, especially in children, acute ethmoidal rhinosinusitis can be complicated by an extension of the infection into the orbit. Also, isolated sphenoid sinusitis is often associated with significant ophthalmologic or neurological complications. Sinus surgery is another possible source of orbital complications associated with pain. The occurrence of orbital pain in these and other sinus pathologies is discussed, since e…

Spontaneous Paraclinoid Carotid Artery Bleeding Presenting as Massive Epistaxis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Fungal pseudoaneurysms of the internal carotid artery (ICA) are rare, life-threatening complications of invasive fungal sinusitis, particularly in immunocompromised patients. These pseudoaneurysms typically occur in the cavernous segment due to its proximity to the sphenoid sinus and often present with massive epistaxis or neurological deficits. The supraclinoid ICA segment is a rare location for these aneurysms and carries risks of both intracranial and sinonasal hemorrhage. This case report presents an 82-year-old immunocompromised male who experienced sudden massive epistaxis and hemoptysis

Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus skull base osteomyelitis with occipital condylar cerebrospinal fluid leak in an immunocompetent patient.

Community acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is emerging as an important pathogen in paranasal sinus disease. However, sinonasal CA-MRSA has not been reported as a source of central skull base osteomyelitis. We report an unusual case of a previously healthy and immunocompetent adult who developed meningitis, central skull base osteomyelitis, and occipital condylar cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea from CA-MRSA sphenoid sinusitis requiring endoscopic surgical repair. This case clearly demonstrates the expanding spectrum of severe infections caused by CA-MRSA, which requ…

Primary sellar lymphoma: radiologic and pathologic findings in two patients.

We describe the clinical, MR imaging, and pathologic findings in two cases of primary sellar lymphoma in immunocompetent individuals. Both patients had hypopituitarism, and one patient had a sixth cranial nerve palsy. MR images depicted sellar and suprasellar masses in both patients, and extension into the cavernous and sphenoid sinuses was also present in one patient. The pathologic diagnosis in both cases was large B cell lymphoma.

Volumetric measurement of paranasal sinuses and its clinical significance in pituitary neuroendocrine tumors operated using an endoscopic endonasal approach.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic endonasal surgery (EES) for deep intracranial lesions has gained popularity following recent developments in endoscopic technology. The operability of invasive pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) depends on the anatomy of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. This study aimed to establish a simple volume reconstruction algorithm of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. Additionally, this is the first study to demonstrate the relationship between the segmentation method and the clinical significance in patients with PitNET. METHODS: Pre-and postoperative tumor volum

SMARCB1-Deficient Sinonasal Carcinoma: A Case Report and Discussion of the Clinical Implications.

OBJECTIVE: SMARCB1-deficient sinonasal tract carcinomas are an emerging subset of rare tumors recently described in the literature, with less than 100 reported cases. Given the aggressive nature of this tumor, timely diagnosis is especially important. We present a case report of a SMARCB1-deficient carcinoma of the sinonasal tract. METHODS: Case report with review of the literature. RESULTS: The patient was a 53-year-old male with computed tomography (CT)-proven mass of the right ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses. Rigid nasal endoscopy revealed a purple mass completely obstructing the right nasal

Isolated esthesioneuroblastoma of sphenoid sinus.

Esthesioneuroblastoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor that arises from the olfactory epithelium and accounts for approximately 3% of all intranasal tumors. The tumor involvement in the nasal cavity with extension to paranasal sinuses, orbit, and anterior cranial fossa, is reported in the literature. In this report, we present an interesting case of isolated sphenoid sinus esthesioneuroblastoma, which is the first case to be reported in the literature, and discuss the pathology, clinical manifestations, and various treatment options for this tumor.

[MR imaging in paranasal and intracranial aspergillosis].

The MR findings in three patients with paranasal and intracranial aspergillosis were analyzed. Two patients had sphenoid sinus aspergillosis with mucocele, and one had aspergillosis in the maxillary sinus and pachymeningitis in the posterior fossa. In all patients with aspergillosis of the paranasal sinuses, a markedly hypointense area was present within the lesion on T2-weighted images. In the patient with pachymeningitis, contrast-enhanced MR images clearly demonstrated the extent of the lesion.

Teary eyes due to 21 pence?

A woman in her late 70s with chronic bilateral epiphora under ophthalmology review was referred to our department for dacryocystorhinostomy after punctoplasty and detection of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. A CT scan of the paranasal sinuses for preoperative planning revealed complete opacification of the right maxillary, anterior ethmoid, frontal and sphenoid sinuses, left septal deviation and an incidental finding of foreign bodies in the right anterior nasal airspace. She proceeded with functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) and removal of foreign bodies. To our surprise, a partially er
